Recall BW (before whistle)

Dog will either
A. Ignore
B. approach slowly whilst looking dim, then look bewildered by resultant treat.
C.Approach enthusiastically and bounce around 3 foot away regardless of awesomeness of reward being offered.

Whistle arrived this morning.

Life today AW (after whistle)

Peep, peep, peep

Labrador appears from any location in house or garden having ceased whatever activity was being partaken. Sits immediately at feet awaiting reward.

I am filled with hope for training now hurrah!!!!!

So I can now conclude the following.

Dog whistles are magical

Or

My dog is so incredibly thick she cannot grasp her own NAME!

it would appear that I must invest in a whistle before 5 mth old lab arrives. Any whistle inparticular or any old whistle? Grin

topsyturner · 03/09/2012 20:14

I need one too !
Are we talking any one in particular ?

I got one as recommended my MN and it changed recall dramatically. I can't rave about them enough - he just turns and hares back despite whatever mischief he's up to (99% of the time!)

It's a proper dog whistle, about £5 from eBay.

pimmsgalore · 03/09/2012 20:29

Only problem I have found with my whistle is pimmsdog runs off I peep peep peep and pimmsdog plus 3 unknown dogs come back Grin

Obviously works well but only if one whistle recall dog is there, have had to buy extra treats for all my new friends who obediently come to my whistle Grin

Fieldette · 03/09/2012 20:32

Which whistle did you buy porkyandbess and honeydragon? I am looking for one which will solve the problem of one small spaniel ignoring me at the moment!

Stoney666 · 03/09/2012 20:59

My 7 month old Kevin doesn't always hear my whistle. Things like other dogs, little old ladies who are dodgy on their feet and cow poo overtake him and I usually end up peep peeping like a loon whilst stamping my feet SadSad

PorkyandBess · 03/09/2012 21:03

It was this one

Wallace · 03/09/2012 21:05

I have this one

Don't know if it is the "right" one. Works brilliantly. Except when an exciting dog is spotted the other side of the beach....

After I had got it and taught recall I read you are supposed to teach sit/stay first. Wish I had done that.

Wallace · 03/09/2012 21:06

cross posts, but same whistle Grin

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 21:10

I have the Acme in purple, but 211.5 not 210.5 as I have a Labrador do different pitch.

Already she is responding to my whistling 3 peeps vocally as well as the whistle which is brilliant.

Looking forward to teaching other stuff like Stop! With it too.

Mine is a lab too, I thought I had bought the one for labs but just checked again and yours is better for labs.

I don't really know what I am doing. Should I get the 211.5 or just stick with mine?

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 21:23

If it ain't broke......

Wallace · 03/09/2012 21:35

True, but now I'm thinking maybe she isn't ignoring me at the beach, maybe the tone is just wrong... Wink

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 21:39

Dunno. Stick your dog on the phone next time your at the beach and I'll blow my whistle. If she appears 200 miles inland with me we'll know you got the wrong whistle. Grin

Puppypanic · 03/09/2012 21:42

How do you know which is the right whistle to choose for your particular breed please?

SheilaWheeler · 03/09/2012 21:48

Right. One bright yellow whistle on order from ebay for the unruly Springer pup.

Wish me luck! I'll be back to whoop joyfully at how good this whistle lark is in the near future (fingers crossed)

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 22:03

Puppypanic

I think the 210.5 is a higher tone and the 211.5 a more solid. Purely on guessing I'd say with a dalimation you'd go 211.5? As the 210.5 seems aimed more toward Spaniels.

From this thread it appears all work regardless though Smile

Thank you Honey!

Stoney666 · 04/09/2012 06:37

I have a 2.10 for Kevin should I try something differentGrin

Fieldette · 04/09/2012 22:33

Brilliant, one whistle to be ordered tomorrow - I shall report back with the results! Hopefully successful! Grin

honeydragon · 05/09/2012 06:32

I managed to recall her away from man with beagle yesterday - that's a first.
