Recall BW (before whistle)

Dog will either
A. Ignore
B. approach slowly whilst looking dim, then look bewildered by resultant treat.
C.Approach enthusiastically and bounce around 3 foot away regardless of awesomeness of reward being offered.

Whistle arrived this morning.

Life today AW (after whistle)

Peep, peep, peep

Labrador appears from any location in house or garden having ceased whatever activity was being partaken. Sits immediately at feet awaiting reward.

I am filled with hope for training now hurrah!!!!!

So I can now conclude the following.

Dog whistles are magical

Or

My dog is so incredibly thick she cannot grasp her own NAME!

At the moment we have The Lead. The master of things wonderful and exciting. If Devil Dog hears so much as clink of the fastener in my bag he's racing back to me for walkies Confused Obviously there is a down side to this i.e the lead clinks against other things in my bag often. The lead clinking is not very loud.

I am thinking I should invest in a whistle for when he eventually realises that he is already on walkies and the lead might mean home time Grin Calling his name does not work. I tried that yesterday. He went and laid under a bush at the shady end of the field and went to sleep instead Hmm Apparently even naps are more exciting than me Sad

We had a silent whistle once. I wasn't sure it worked until I tested it at the park and everyone's dog came rushing up except mine Grin I might have to try one of these peep peep ones instead.

Which one would be best for an errant terrier cross who pleases only himself 99.99% of the time?

I used a whistle with dearly departed dragon dog when she was small as well. I used to end up with her and about a dozen other dogs too Grin

I've got a shepherd's whistle for my Springers. Took a little while to get the hang of, but once you have the knack it's great. Very compact and light too.

I had my oldest dog from a pup and used the whistle to call her to her meals - even if she was stood next to me. She has far better recall to the whistle than voice. IME whistle training's quick and easy. Parent's dog had recall issues, but is excellent to a whistle.
