where does your dog sleep?

We are thinking about getting a dog but im not sure where would be best for him to sleep, its either going be in the kitchen or our bedroom. Where does your dog sleep and where do you think is best, im thinking he may settle better in our room but longterm he may be better off going in the kitchen.
I haven't even got him yet and im stressing about where he will sleep! Smile

Big ones downstairs, they have beds in the hall. Our hall is all nooks & crannies, old house, & they pick one each.

My two little ones in the bedroom, one always ends up on the bed snuggled as close to me as she can get.

In a crate in the kitchen/diner. Start as you mean to go on - big crate with enough room for dog to stand up, stretch out, turn round as an adult (if you are starting with a tiny pup) and to have both a soft bed (we have an old duvet) and food and water. Can be shut in there overnight or if we have dog-timid kids round, chooses to go in there to nap and the kids are trained to leave her alone if she's in there.

Pre Dcs dogs slept on our bed. Dear dog 1 is no longer with us and dear dog 2 has a bed in the utility room, but at night has run of utility kitchen and hall. He potters but spends most of the night on the half landing midway up the stairs.

Ours has his crate in the living room (it is an enclosed flight type crate with front gate) he loves it.... starts his evening routine when the kids go to bed - jumps on to hubby's lap, curls up and does cat-sleeping impression... gets too hot, moves to leather sofa beside hubby, some arbitrary point of evening, trots off to crate, stretches out and that is him til morning, we shut the gate before bedtime as he is still young and we want some nice things left in the living room when we get up

They did sleep on landing outside bedroom door, but dog1 would bark everytime i got up for a wee, moved them onto the middle landing but as I get up at 5.30 for work, i found it difficult to climb over them on the stairs.

Then Dog1 broke her leg and couldn't get up the stairs, so we built under the stairs, making it into a double dog bed, with a a double bean bag, the front has a crate door so we can lock them in if need be.

Both dog1 and dog2 sleep in there now shoving each other to see who can get under the lowest end.

Shoshe that sounds brilliant! I'd love to do something like that but our stair cupboard is a tool shed and general crap cupboard.

DH made it, just made a frame that fitted under stairs and along the floor and up the wall, used caging, like a crate to make a front and cut a hole the size of the crate door we had and fixed it, its brill and easily removed which as we lived in Military quarters we had to be able to do.

Didnt cost much as we were given the caging, and I made the bean bag bed.

It's sounds brill! Like a proper little cubby hole for the dogs :)

In the study. He used to sleep in the kitchen but far prefers it in the study (I think it's because he likes to read books while we're asleep Wink)

Dogs are not bloody wolves. Dogs are dogs. Wolves are wolves. They're barely even related Hmm

DogBach sleeps in her bed in the kitchen. I do love my dog but I enjoy the peace of knowing she is lovely and cosy in her bed and we are cosy in ours Grin plus it means that the cat gets some uninterrupted cuddles without a nosy collie poking her!

Dogs are from the wolf family, they are really. They need to know boundaries and are pack animals. They don't really adapt to you, you need to show them respect by explaining your pack rules.

People get into trouble by not respecting the animal.

I have a dog, i love her wih all my heArt, i have children i love them more.

If your still doubting wolves are dogs read the genetic research!

What a load of rubbish Smile

I have two dogs.

10 yr old dog lies at bottom of the bed, gets down when he feels like it and sleeps under a chair in our bedroom.

8 month old puppy waits until I'm in bed then snuggles into the crook behind my knees. He sleeps on the covers until early morning, when DH gets up. As soon as DH gets up, he slips under the covers!

See, babyrabbits, the puppy knows his place exactly:

1st part of evening - as close to me as possible. Don't annoy DH who doesn't appreciate 'snuggles' from a 15kg animal Wink

2nd part of evening - it's safe to spread out because DH is asleep, as long as you don't lie completely across the bed pushing Lougle out.

First thing in the morning - wait 1 minute 30 seconds after DH gets out of bed to ascertain that he doesn't intend to return. Snuggle under the covers at the foot of the bed.

Genetics doesn't have any bearing.

I share 98% of my DNA with a gorilla. I don't sleep in a nest or follow their social conventions.

People are people
Gorillas are gorrillas
Dogs are dogs
And Cats are Masters of the Universe.

My dog falls asleep at the foot of my bed, but sometime in the night moves to the hallway / the bathroom floor and eventually under DD's cot.

Never in his bed!!

LOL - my Whippet is about as far from a wolf as I am from a giraffe!!

He'd freeze to death if I left him outside and would likely get ill if I left him to sleep on the cold kitchen floor (he's skin and bone and finds the floor very uncomfortable).

Mine sleep happily in crate in kitchen. They have done for 3 years.
I'm really amazed how many dogs sleep in bedrooms?! Wow!
Mine aren't even allowed upstairs!

Big dog sleeps in his bed in the hallway until the last person goes to bed. Then he sleeps in the upstairs hallway til about 3am. Then he moves into our bedroom til DH gets up for work when he gets in my bed, when I get up, he goes to sleep in DDs bed Grin

Little dog sleeps at the foot of our bed until DH gets up for work, then jumps in my bed, when I get up, he sneaks into ds2 bed

There's a pattern here isn't there?!

We had 2 foster dogs about 3 months ago, only for 3 weeks and they also slept in our room.
I'm running out of floor space...

Oh and the cat sleeps in ds1 room!

My dog has slept in the kitchen from day one - it's never been a problem. She does actually have the run of downstairs during the night, but appears to stay in her bed all night. I like her being downstairs as I feel safer knowing she would alert us if anyone broke in!

Dog 1 began in a crate. Made an unholy noise in the kitchen so we moved him into our bedroom as DH was worried about noisy and irritating themselves neighbours. Gradually ended up on our bed

DDog 2- started in crate and despite crying a few nights ended up living it and taking himself off to bed at about half 9 :) then came that harsh winter and our hearing broke down. So we took him upstairs.

So two in the bed :(
The older one will sleep on our floor but will sneaky onto an unguarded pillow if he can get away with it is snoozing on DH's right now

I don't like it if I'm honest!

Sleeps in the kitchen in a pen, find she's most settled in her own safe place which is what she's had since we got her as a puppy. No howling or barking.
Having had a very elderly dog in the last year think its very useful to have somewhere you can wipe up easily when they are poorly.

Started off in kitchen but since the housefire he is now in our room.

My maternal instincts kicked in big-time & I decided I wanted us all to be in the one place should we ever have the misfortune to experience that night again.
