where does your dog sleep?

We are thinking about getting a dog but im not sure where would be best for him to sleep, its either going be in the kitchen or our bedroom. Where does your dog sleep and where do you think is best, im thinking he may settle better in our room but longterm he may be better off going in the kitchen.
I haven't even got him yet and im stressing about where he will sleep! Smile

First two nights in my bed.
Next two nights next to my bed.
After that in his bed in the bathroom where I want him to sleep.

My theory was to make him feel secure and safe first, and then move on to a little more independence.

Same theory I used with my babies.

He didn't howl when left alone in his own bed for the first night and settled quite happily.

Both our lurchers sleep in the dining room. Not allowed upstairs so the cat has a safe haven and to try and keep the dog hairs out.

At night, in DDs bedroom - it's her rule and means she stays there If DD's away then on our bed.

All other times wherever she wants; sofa, garden. Currently on my feet under my desk.

Ddog1 started off in a dog cage under the stairs - partly because it was the most obvious bit of underused space, and partly because we hoped it would feel secure for her, because it was a bit more closed in. She eventually progressed to a bed in the same place, and when we got ddog2, we shifted things round a bit so we could fit two beds in there, and that's where they sleep. Interestingly, one of the beds is clearly the best bed, and there is a bit of competition for who gets to sleep there - it is usually ddog2 as she is more bossy and assertive, but sometimes ddog1 ends up there, looking very smug.

They do come upstairs with us at bedtime, for a cuddle, but have never spent the night in our room - because with two of us and two labradors (well, one big lab and one very leggy lab cross), I doubt dh and I would get much sleep!

SDT that sounds lovely for them. If I got another dog I think my dog would love that Smile

He has a smelly beanbag in the living room and a pile of soft folded blankets in our bedroom. He chooses to ignore the blankets and sleep on the hard floor though, I don't know why.

Our greyhound sleeps in our room on his memory foam bed in the corner. We did try him downstairs when we got him but he howled and barked so DP carried him (all 37kgs of him!) up and downstairs every morning and evening for about 5 months until he eventually learnt to go up and down by himself :o

lab-dog sleeps in his crate in the living room, covered by a blanket at night, he likes it dark he's always slept there and takes himself to bed, so not as though I force him, but I do shut him in when I go to bed. he would chew the living room to pieces if I left him out he doesn't go upstairs unless it's for a bath.

Puppy sleeps in a crate under the kitchen table now. We've tried DS's room and my room and we were advised that is was making her separation anxiety worse if she didn't sleep by herself so we had to move her. I had been misguidedly trying to do attachment parenting as that worked great for DS. No complaints from her. I get up and take her out for a wee at 7 and then she comes into my bed with DS for a cuddle for half and hour before we get up.

Slightly indelicate question, but the reason I never wanted the dog in my room (let alone in my bed) was that I would find it a serious passion-killer. For those of you who let the dog sleep in your room: does having a dog in your bed not, ahem, spoil the enthusiam somewhat?

We've done allsorts in our room with the dog there. Once he goes to bed at the end of te day he may aswell just be one of the cuddly toys!

Only once Yakka, when I opened my eyes mid shag to see him stood over me and DP tail wagging watching intently. Oh and once when he tried to lick DP arse.

Other than that he tends to just nick off

:D

Our dog has a bed in the livingroom and a bed in DS1's room (she's very lazy) but can generally be found sleeping in the hall between the DS's bedrooms or in the winter in DS1's bed until her snoring gets too loud and she's chucked out!

Hound 1 has his his own lair in the spare bedroom, where he likes to sleep with his special Father Christmas toy and assorted "treasures" Hmm from elsewhere in the house.

Hound 2 starts the night on her sheepskin at the foot of our bed, but invariably ends up snuggled between DH and me on the bed. If DH is away working during the week, as he often does, she simply starts the night on the bed with me, and stays there.

Hound 1 joins us on bed in morning for snuggle time and his special treat - he gets to lick the Yeo Valley yogurt pot - it's our morning ritual. Smile

Ours has a bed in the living room. She's never been allowed upstairs. She seems perfectly happy.

one - the JR sleeps on my legs and grumbles every time I move, and the BCollie sleeps beside the bed at my side - and I am glad she does, as it's how I realised she was unwell, when she was so restless!

In her basket in the lounge. When I get up in the morning though I make a cup of tea and she comes and lies on my bed while I drink my tea. I can't sleep with her on my bed as she snores although the dog sitter lets her sleep on her bed!
