The doghouse

If you're worried about your pet's health, please speak to a vet or qualified professional.

Should Mumsnet HQ simply ban people trying to rehome their pets on here?

I am not belittling the tireless devotion Mnetters have done for all the animals they helped.

It would be a loss for any other future animals they could help.

But if people are Internet savvy enough to post a dramatic post about rejoining their dog, than they are able to google the info they need.

Too many people are shitty about the doghouse and regular posters.

I can understand posting on a site that is largely considered a parenting site wanting help with working out a family dynamic. But it's not an animal welfare forum.

Please don't think I am callous or cruel. It is a genuine question, I'm not even sure how I feel tbh.

Mnet hq could simply send an email with perhaps a list of approved numbers to contact.

Would that help make the dog house a place for advice and opinion?

Oh fuck rehoming their dog. Anyone attempting to rejoin a dog should be banned mnet and possibly Earth itself Blush

But loads of questions get asked on here that you just need to google.

TBF until mumsnet I thought the only option for rehoming was SSPCA.

And for most people rehoming a dog would be horrendous, so they probably come here for the support as well as the advice and don't expect to be snarled at by the Doghouse elite

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/08/2012 21:01

And surely dogs are part of the family dynamic.

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 08/08/2012 21:04

That's my problem. The advice is brilliant, but the goading and shiit stirring isn't. And more tImes the op doesn't want advice than does Sad

I think it's daft that people on mnet think of Feminism boards and the Dog house as no go areas.

OP posts:
AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 08/08/2012 21:06

I disagree in the idea of a dog house elite.

I think MNHQ need to do a lot more of their info pages, including one on rehoming options, and one on the implications of any "conflict" between dog and child.

I also think it is really important to have this board to educate. I hate this assumption that if a pet bites your PFB then it is a vicious killer that must be PTS immediately without even considering the circumstances around the bite, or even if it was a "proper" bite.

Surely if a large dog had truly bitten your toddler you would be in A&E preparing for your toddler to go into surgery, rather than wringing your hands on MN.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/08/2012 21:12

There is an elite though that used to be Valhala its the same on the feminist boards. A few posters who frequent the boards and see the same posts over and over again (eg rehoming) and who tend to be quite agressive short with posters as they are understandably tired of fighting the tide of ignorance doghouse anyway, the feminism lot are just terrifying without justification

LookBehindYou · 08/08/2012 21:13

What's a PFB?

EdgarOlymPic · 08/08/2012 21:17

i agree that is not the right place but redirection has merits.

same as for puppy buying, a sticky would be useful.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/08/2012 21:18

PFB = precious first born

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 08/08/2012 21:18

Sorry, don't agree with you on this HoneyDragon. It's important that people can come here and get help with this. Many dogs would have lost their lives over the years if valhalla people hadn't given so much advice & help. It is a family issue - and anyway, even if it wasn't, it wouldn't matter as much of what is discussed on MN has very little to do with parenting!

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 08/08/2012 21:19

Ok I agree with your point on the regulars, I think if I was on the front line of animal abuse and abandonment I'd be a bit incandescently raging tetchy.
Newbies would not realise this.

On here it is slightly more understandable than on feminism other boards.

OP posts:
LookBehindYou · 08/08/2012 21:19

Also, I have seen lots of mners post from their phone in the midst of drama and found it bizarre.

SrirachaGirl · 08/08/2012 21:31

This.

I love the doghouse but I dare not enter without my chainmail suit. I am no expert, just an enthusiastic and interested lay-person but I get pretty tired of the dogma Grin espoused there sometimes.

Rehoming is tricky; it's an emotional issue that posters may need support with but MN has also created a place where anyone is free to go begging for homes for unwanted dogs. On the one hand I'm in awe of the generosity and passion of some of the doghouse regulars who selflessly help out rehomers but also hate to think of anyone being taken advantage of....Confused.

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 08/08/2012 21:33

chipping that's the thing, I agree with everything you have just said too.

And those posters that are made out to be shouty ogres have helped countless people.

But I have seen them treated appallingly on other boards before on non doggy issues simply because of who they are.Sad

OP posts:
ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 08/08/2012 22:02

HoneyDragon - there's nothing to stop them namechanging Wink

Not that they should have to, but people will be assholes people and you can't stop that. If MN bans advertising/asking about rehoming, the dogs will be MUCH worse off, but the people wont change... so what do you actually hope to achieve?

(You haven't brought your profile over to your new name - not that I was looking for updated photos of Hully of course Blush)

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 08/08/2012 22:17

I can't have my profile up Chipping. This is my cunning name change disguise. Olivia chased me across the boards waving the big bad banning finger last week Shock I may have deserved it Grin

I think Chipping your right animal welfare should be foremost. I do like the idea of Mumsnet having a dog house sticky or advice page.

EdgarOlymPic · 08/08/2012 22:31

as an occasional doom-and-gloom unfunny poster on dog issues, the reason is simple - many people are very in the dark on what is right with dogs.

you often hear people saying it is fine to leave dogs at home all day, or not walk them, buy from Friday-ad (or its internet equivalents) etc etc etc..

having a minority viewpoint doesn't make it wrong though.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 08/08/2012 22:51

Very cunning Grin

PS: Feel free to PM me with the gossip - missed all of that... bloody real life getting in the sodding way again!

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 08/08/2012 22:57

I may have caused a small amount of strife involving a lot of blanks posts.
RL is an ARSE

Edgar, you are right.

I have a puppy now. My brain is broken. It is 10 years since I had a puppy - I'd be lost without the doghouse.

You get the same treatment on fishnet as here you know. Get them on Pets at Home or BiOrbs and it gets nasty

OP posts:
Lougle · 08/08/2012 23:14

I think the doghouse has changed since the 'knowledge' has been diluted. Last time there was a major spat on TDH about attitude, etc., I was one of the posters who said 'I'd never go to TDH for advice'.

In the last 8 months though, the culture has changed, even if there is a way to go. I have posted for advice in ignorance, and got measured, helpful advice.

Oh I saw the thread about blank posts but never got around to opening it - wish I had now Grin

I'll have to be patient for updated photos then Grin

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 08/08/2012 23:30

I'm in a gang as well apparently.

It's a bit lonely just me.......

Btw honey your blank post doesn't work anymore.
But I know what does Grin
