ElephantsCanRemember · 18/07/2012 07:41

Aw what a gorgeous photo. What sort of dog is s/he?

rogersmellyonthetelly · 18/07/2012 07:49

She is a staff, doing her job as nanny dog :0)

ElephantsCanRemember · 18/07/2012 07:52

She is lovely Smile and she looks very snuggly.

FrillyMilly · 18/07/2012 07:56

I have one of these savage beasts too. He's usually being used as a toy by our young cat (I'm sure he rolls his eyes at her) or getting cuddles from DD 3.10.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 18/07/2012 10:06

Do you know, I actually didn't see the staff at first. I was trying to work out what breed the giant cushion was Blush

winnybella · 18/07/2012 10:15

Me too, Chickens Grin

Aww, OP. Very sweet.

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 10:23

Ahh I knew it was a staff as soon as I saw the big cow eyes :)

You do know if the frothers see that you'll be labelled a bad mother don't you? My savage devil dog lion cross is currently cuddling her teddy all snug under her blanket, she's a bit cold this morning after her walk Hmm

ditavonteesed · 18/07/2012 10:24

awwwwwwwwwwwww

Ormiriathomimus · 18/07/2012 10:25

I can see the toddler blood dripping from it's slavering jaws!

Stoney666 · 18/07/2012 10:57

What a lovely picture

Ephiny · 18/07/2012 11:47

Chickens, me too - I thought it was a Newfie for a moment :)

pimmsgalore · 18/07/2012 14:05

he's soooooo cute

our lab collie cross has been curling up on the DCs just like that all week, only at 30kg he is NOT a lap dog no matter how much he thinks he is Confused

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 14:07

Oh right.

Sorry you may have to explain the humour to me?
As someone who was attacked by a staffie when I was a teenager I'm afraid the humorous tone has gone right over my head.

Lougle · 18/07/2012 14:09

That must have been awful for you, TheRhubarb. I think that in general Staffordshire Bull Terriers have got a reputation they don't deserve, though, and that photo is a lovely example of a (typically) gentle Staffy Smile

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 14:12

Yes it's a nice photo and yes not all staffies deserve the dangerous labels they've had put on them.
However children ARE attacked by dogs on a regular basis (not all of them are reported) and there are many children who have been horrifically maimed and of course quite a few deaths.

The thread title seems to be making light of something that I fail to find any humour in.

Call me a frother and a spoilsport, but although I can fully understand your argument I cannot understand your thread title. Why make light of something so tragic?

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 14:16

Rhubarb dont read too much into the thread title, this is a light hearted thread to counteract the quite horrid posts recently from people who believe SBTs have it bred into them to attack and kill people.

I see loads of thread titles I dont find humour in

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 14:23

I am not one of those people hairylemon.

Yes there are lots of thread titles I don't find particularly amusing either, but this is a sensitive subject and I'm not surprised that many people react so badly against staffies - I'm not excusing their behaviour but when you see how the Press report on staffies then it's hardly surprising.

But children getting injured, maimed and dying is not something I would have thought you could joke about? I have been attacked by a staffie and it's no laughing matter. Imagine if someone on Mumsnet had a child who was severely mauled by one of them? It's not beyond the realms of possibility given than millions of people have joined Mumsnet.

I'm sure I will now stand accused of being a frother, but I do hope that some of what I've said will be taken on board. You can't fight the angry mob with sick jokes, that just makes the situation worse.

GobblersKnob · 18/07/2012 14:23

My stafford bit my baby who needed plastic surgery, but I still think they are a wonderful breed who get a horribly un-deservered press.

We were sady just very unlucky to have one of the very few who truly didn't like children, just like all dogs (and people) all are different, I was stupid enough to think he would be different with my child, because he loved me so much.

Sorry didn't want to put a downer on the thread, your photo is lovely, and ds has grown up to adore dogs. We also kept my actual child savager, as it was my fault not his, with a very complicated system of baby gates, so it wasn't all doom and gloom.

I have absolutely no problem with the thread title either Smile

Ephiny · 18/07/2012 14:25

I can see how the title would seem a bit insensitive to someone who has had a bad experience actually. I'm sure it wasn't meant to make light of those situations though, more the daft stereotypes people have about certain breeds.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 18/07/2012 14:26

I'm not seeing a 'joke'. The OP is just making a tongue in cheek comment. She's not in any way making fun of the fact that some children are mauled by dogs. She's making fun of the people who see a staffy and assume it will eat their offspring because the media like to portray them as flossing with human rib bones.

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 14:26

I am astounded by your post GobblersKnob. You kept the dog? The one that attacked me was supposedly good as gold too, never been a problem and no-one wanted to know about the attack. I was scared witless and thought I was going to die.

Before I become a bona fida frother, I think I'd better leave the thread.

Sorry, I didn't intend to make light of any tragic incident where a dog attacks a child, I just get very tired of the constant labelling of staffs
as vicious dogs when nothing is further that the truth, which is that ANY dog of any breed can attack a person if provoked, staffs seem to be in the news more than most breeds because it's sensationalist and sells newspapers. small child savaged by jack Russell doesn't have quite the same ring to it it seems.

OP posts:
BoyMeetsWorld · 18/07/2012 14:29

This does annoy me somewhat. Of course it's terrible for anyone who's been attacked by a dog, but I'm not overly convinced the breed has as much to do with the hate campaigning as media hype. V much doubt the news reports every time a kid gets bitten by a terrier - which I'm sure happens often enough. All small children should be supervised around all dogs, end of - they're animals at the end of the day. But if we tarred all people of certain heights / builds / ethnicities in the same way as we do dogs, purely on the actions of a few singled out by the press, it would count as racism... rant over
