(though I sometimes greet my two Rotties by saying something like 'how are my big vicious devil dogs then?' while I give them a kiss and a cuddle. We read something in the paper the other day mentioning 'Rottweilers and other fearsome breeds' Hmm so now they tend to get 'ooh who's a fearsome boy then' while having their bellies rubbed. I don't actually mean it, that's kind of the point!)

BoyMeetsWorld · 18/07/2012 14:31

Whoops just cross posted rogers Blush but I agree entirely. Gorgeous dog by the way. We have a lovely slobbery Boxer who gets the same prejudice, despite not technically even being a 'dangerous' breed

GobblersKnob · 18/07/2012 14:32

Yes, I did TheRhubarb, he was assessed by both a vet (to make sure he was physically okay) and a canine behaviouist (who agreed I was doing the right thing). It wasn't his fault I had a baby, he was my responsibility.

He was never allowed in the room with any child again, but he lived another six happy years, what right had I to take that away? Because I made a mistake? He didn't attack my ds btw, he bit him, as dogs do to warn off other dogs.

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 14:35

I know you're not Rhubarb, but you have read a bit to much into a daft thread title taking the piss out of the actual frothers. The press has a lot to answer for when it comes to their reputation thats for sure.

So, please understand that when us SBT owner call our dogs "beasts" "devil dogs" "child eating monsters" we are not making light of dog attacks from any breed, we are just being sarcastic because this is what our dogs are called on a daily basis by those who cant see beyond the reports in the press.

And I am sorry if someone on MN has had someone mauled by any breed of dog, but you will ALWAYS offend someone with a thread title.

FWIW I wouldnt label you a frother based on what you have said here because to be fair you havent tarred all SBTs with the same brush, I do thin kyou are perhaps a bit over sensitive on this subject though so even if the title said "oooh look at this beast" and you clicked and saw the pic I suspect you would still see something to be offended by.

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 14:37

THANK GOD I thought I was on my own here guys Grin

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 14:39

Gobblers That was a lucky dog to have you willing to give him a second chance. I feel the ame way in that if our dog ever bites one of my kids it will be my fault, not the dogs, not the kids, mine.

Lougle · 18/07/2012 14:40

My SBT sat and kept watch over my 3 year old who was sleeping (not very well) yesterday. He's only 7 months old, yet he knew she wasn't well.

He regulary chooses my 6 year old to cuddle up to in the morning. He senses she's more vulnerable because of her SN.

He is adorable. His teeth are big. They could do incredible damage. But I spend hours and hours saying 'gentle' and teaching him 'no teeth'.

Mamamaiasaura · 18/07/2012 14:41

What a twatish title. For a parenting forum, there is very likely to be parents with children who have been a victim of dog attack. What utter ignorance and insensitivity.

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 14:41

It was merely the 'child eating monster' that got to me. Because children HAVE died and tbh it would be the same with any dog.

I don't read all the press reports on dangerous dogs as I get The Guardian, who don't tend to sensationalise these things.

Yes I do get that there are frothers out there. I was brought up with dogs, my mother and brother bred them and I worked with dogs, yet I would never now have a dog. Never. Having said that, I don't hate dogs. Some dog owners can be funny mind Wink

Perhaps I am being sensitive? But having been on the receiving end twice (the other time was with a German Shepherd) I guess my humour concerning dog attacks is not as it was.Smile

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 14:44

Oh and btw, both times I was blamed for the attacks.

The first time I was 9 and sitting on a swing in a public park, the dog grabbed me from behind and wrenched me off then stood over me and tried to bite my head.

That was apparently my fault because being on a swing aggravated it, so said it's owners. And the park was the dogs territory. Nothing was done. This was in the '80s.

Second time I was working at a dog kennels and I made the mistake of turning my back on the staffie which then went for me. My mistake again!

I'm glad you are all responsible dog owners but never forget that this was not always the case and when you've suffered a traumatic attack, it's not easy to put those feelings aside.

Everyone has a story.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/07/2012 14:47

What a lovely picture :) They look like they're having a nice snuggle all warm and cosy.

therealmrsk · 18/07/2012 14:48

Awwwww how lovely.

I have a staffy. He's my baby Grin.

In my opinion, they are the most loving, loyal, intelligent, funny, mardy arse dogs you can find. It breaks my heart when I see them being dragged around the streets by irresponsible dog owners.

mindosa · 18/07/2012 14:52

Lougle Its a dog so do you really think you saying gentle and no teeth is going to prevent an incident.

Gobble I have no words for you keeping a dog that bit your child.

GoranisGod · 18/07/2012 14:53

You do realise this thread is doing nothing to assuage the reputation of the doghouse as full of loons who keep dogs who bite their dcs requiring them to have plastic surgery dont you?

I was bitten by a dog-dalmation-as a child-didnt put me off dogs at all. But I think this thread is in very poor taste and as I already said is doing you no favours whatsoever....

out2lunch · 18/07/2012 14:54

nasty short sighted comments here on a silly thread

any dog would do what yours is doing in the photo

Goran, all this thread is showing is that people cannot even have a light hearted thread about what their SBTs get up to without it being derailed by people who just cant bear to see people showing what lovely dogs they can be. Its really rather odd tbh.

However, I look forward to the people who have issues with this thread title popping up on the next "I could just kill DH for " to slag that title off as it is offensive to those of us who have lost people to a murder. Ooh and the ones announcing pregnancies as that is offensive to those of us who wont be having any more children. And any that announce successful diets on the weightloss threads as they are offensive to us fat bastards.

And I'm not a dog hater at all. I am totally irritated by useless owners who don't care for their dogs, train them or pick up their poo. But that, I know, isn't all dog owners.

GoranisGod · 18/07/2012 15:06

I didnt say your thread title was offensive hairy-I said it was provovcative because it is and thats what you intended it to be.

No point in getting riled with me because a number of posters have objected to it or because some of us believe that having a dog who has bitten your child still saying in your home with said child is really not the normal reaction of a parent imo....

I am not a dog hater-I had the same dog for 17 years. I love dogs-I know all the dog owners at our local park. But I love my kids more than any dog and if a dog bit my kids it would be gone.
