Honest

OP posts:
GoranisGod · 18/07/2012 15:42

hairy-are the "awful" posts on that thread you refer to the ones where people disagreed with you?

There were a few posters on that thread who like maia and myself believe that the safety of a child is more important than the life of a dog. Its hardly a controversial opinion now is it?.

GoranisGod · 18/07/2012 15:45

I didnt call the dog owners on this thread "loons"Hmm I merely pointed out that the doghouse has imo aqquired a bit of a reputation for having posters who will defend dogs doing pretty much anything.

I shall say it again-I am not a dog hater. I love dogs. But I would not keep a dog in my home that had bitten my child so badly that they required surgery. Its a no brainer imo...

GobblersKnob · 18/07/2012 15:48

D0oinMeCleanin posting 'who are we to judge', on mn the home of all that is judgy? Grin

I was more than capable of keeping him safe though, as I said up thread, we had him for another six years, but he is long gone now.

I am actually very dog savvy, proving it can happen to pretty much anyone. In fact the fairly well known dog behaviourist who I train with now, had her son bitten by one of her dogs too.

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 15:50

Goran, no-one on any thread in the DH puts a childs safety second to a dog. People believeing that to be the case causes most of the arguments on here and its daft because we all believe the same thing

Mama - I have reported my post for bringing the other thread into it and the ones after where we discuss it, it was poor form and I shouldnt have done that. Apologies.

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 15:52

Can I just state at this point that I am not with any argument or on any side.

Both sides are displaying lunatic tendencies.

I did find the thread title dubious because it seemed to be antagonistic (only the OP can say whether that was her intention or not) and not overly a thread for celebrating staffies.

Also the comparisons to other thread titles are wrong. You would have to have a thread title that said "My dh is a woman-hating thug" to have a fair comparison.

I can see both arguments at the moment and personally feel that a thread celebrating staffies could have been better worded as this one seemed to want to rile certain people.

Smile
Mamamaiasaura · 18/07/2012 15:53

I was not "awful" to op. I was however having issue with the pressure on OP to keep the dog and retrain, when she clearly did not want to do this. And IMO she did the absolute correct thing (albeit hard) given circumstances. Almost every fucking dog thread I post on, either you or do take issue. I will say my pov as this is public forum but I will (try) to put in politely. I am not anti dog, but I do see a lot of crap irresponsible owners. I will not have a dog at present as I don't think I could give it the time it needs and have a very young family. My garden is small and do is my home. It doesn't mean I dislike dogs, it's just when we have a dog, it will be for always and therefore I will only do so when I can promise that.

However I still have an opinion and interest in dogs.

Mamamaiasaura · 18/07/2012 15:55

Just seen your post hairy (had been too absorbed typing mine Blush).

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 16:01

Rhubarb, to be honest at the moment ANY thread title celebrating this breed will end up in an argument Sad

Mama, honestly, I do not take issue with your posts personally, I only look at whos posted it so I can type out who I am responding to. I honestly do not have some weird MN stalker-crush on you.

Now, getting back to the actual subject of the thread - my lovely devil-dog-beast-monster is STILL in the same position as she was this morning. She hasnt moved, Ive just had to poke her to check she is still alive and was rewarded with a piggy grunt Smile

Ninjacat · 18/07/2012 16:03

As a child I got bitten by a dog in the street.
The police made me go to the mans house and pick out which dog bit me (he was walking two, an Old English sd and a German Shep)
I don't even know if I picked the right dog and the guilt is still with me almost 30years after that the dog got put down.

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 16:06

hairy, if the thread title was directly about celebrating staffies then your argument would stand, but this thread title is not clear and that is why so many people are riled.

I hesitate to say it but the OP appears to have done a post and run which should tell you all you need to know about their intentions.

If I were you, I'd just leave this thread to die and do a separate one for SBT lovers. Then if anyone comes over all offended you can be fully justified in telling them to fuck off Grin

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 16:11

no fucking way am I starting another thread, Ive got shit to do tonight Grin

I'll happily kill this one though - anyone got any suggestions on how to pull a long hair out of a dogs arse without causing any damage or upset? Confused

Cheriefroufrou · 18/07/2012 16:13

"There are only dangerous dOgs because of irresponsible owners.

My staffys would not bite anyone, they are well trained. The puppy sleeps on ds2 as a pillow. "

you ARE an irresponsible dog owner if you think you can ever be 100% sure that ANY dog wont turn and bite SOMEONE
Yes its unlikely it'll bite your children, but possible it could bite someone elses, YOU are a dangerous dog owner if you do not accept that there is a possibility tha this could happen with ANY dog!

TheRhubarb · 18/07/2012 16:19

hairy - with your teeth! Grin

ChickensHaveNoLips · 18/07/2012 16:21

Every bloody thread on here at the moment is going batshit

IawnCont · 18/07/2012 16:32

I don't care about the breed. It's the individual dog. And, having had a lovely sweet dog in the family, a dog we played with and slept with, loved completely and adored, turn around one day and bite, I would like to warn any posters that think they can guarantee that their dog wouldn't bite. You cannot guarantee any behaviour, not from an animal or a human. If your dog was ill and in pain, can you guarantee it wouldn't bite then? If it became old and senile?

I think the OP's photo is cute, but the thread title is a little insensitive.

perplexedpirate · 18/07/2012 16:33

That beautiful pic has made me really want a dog.
Gorgeous!

hairylemon · 18/07/2012 16:33

Shock I love her but thats taking things a bit too far. might just leave DP to deal with it Grin

TantrumsAndBalloons · 18/07/2012 17:02

Ok, I am very far from an irresponsible dog owner.

All 4 of my dogs were rescue dogs with different degrees on behaviour/training issues.

One of them was very snappy and wary of other people, we did an enormous amount of work with all of them.
The irresponsible owners are the ones who didn't bother to train or socialise these dogs, who bought them because they thought they would grow into viscous nasty attack dogs and then dumped them when they didn't behave.

I have worked with them, they are friendly, loving, placid, wonderful dogs now. They are trained, they don't run after dogs or people, they sit down when anyone comes into the house and wait to be told to come over, they meet other dogs in the park all the time and have never so much as shown their teeth to another dog, even when the dog is barking because I tell them to leave and they listen. They come to me the instant I call them, regardless of what they are sniffing/eating/looking at.

How fucking dare you call me an irresponsible owner?

My dogs are incredibly well behaved and looking back at how they were, each one of them when we rescued them, you have a fucking nerve to pass judgement.
They won't bite, my first staffy passed away aged 14 and never bit, snarled, growled at anyone or anything.
So, no they won't bite.
One of them was almost cornered by an American bulldog about 4 times his size, it was clearly wanting to attack, my dog came running to me, he didn't fight back.

They are surrounded by children, they have their ears and tails pulled, if it gets too much they go and lay in bed, the DCs know not to follow them.

So as you clearly know fuck all about me or the behaviour of my dogs, kindly do not cast doubt on my ability as a dog owner.

Signet2012 · 18/07/2012 17:09

looks round... hysteria - check, dog people vs non dog people - check, staffy devil dog mention - check

And off to read about clit piercings, AIBU, MIL thread and other old news.

Biscuit
Cheriefroufrou · 18/07/2012 17:12

"dog people vs non dog people"

rubbish, plenty of people (including me) who think that people who don't respect that ANY dog can bite is both irresponsible and dangerous, are also dog owners/lovers.

no dog is "safe", not a staffie, not any! nanny dog smammy dog, its still a DOG!

Tawnyhairedandgoldenlimbed · 18/07/2012 17:16

OP your dog looks gorgeous, but most dogs do.

Please don't get overconfident - any dog can just turn and Staffies definitely can and do. My little lab puppy was attacked out of the blue by a Staffie just last week which appeared from nowhere. I had to kick it off him, was very frightening. The owner was just horrified and kept repeating "but he's NEVER done it before"!!!

higgle · 18/07/2012 17:17

A lovely picture of a beautiful Staffie. I used to get so sick of people assuming my (now deceased) Staffie had a nasty past that was the reason he was in rescue that I just used to say he had killed a few babies to shut them up. He was the only dog ( out of 4) we have had over the years that never bit any of the family.

SpringHeeledJack · 18/07/2012 17:22

he probably never had done it before, Tawny

my dog (a Staffy) has been bitten by two Border Collies and two Jack Russells for no apparent reason

In each of these four cases, the owner didn't know what had got into their dog, and they had never done it before

I have to conclude that my dog is just very, very annoying to other dogs Grin

ftr he has never ever attacked another dog, and is as soft as shite

Signet2012 · 18/07/2012 17:27

Cherie.. I agree to a point however, a lot of threads lately seem to be going down these exact same lines.

I completely agree that no dog is safe, I have been attacked by staffies on several different occasions, and have also been bit by my own dog who is a springer collie cross.

Unfortunately lots of valid points get lost in the same old discussions on these threads as it generally comes down to a bun fight and the original point of the thread gets lost.

A dog, is an animal. You can never trust any animal (or person) to be safe, sweet and lovely all of the time. Any person who does wholeheartedly put 100% trust in their dog is a fool. REGARDLESS of a breed.

Like I say, my dog has bitten. I am pregnant. I will NEVER trust my dog alone with a baby or small child. That said I also have photo's similiar to the OP's where he is being lovely and sweet, he has bitten me out of my own bad management of a situation. I have no reason to think he would bite my child but that does not mean I will ever be complacent.

Jenski · 18/07/2012 17:35

I have no problem with responsible dog owners, BUT i had to tell someone to get their dogs (2 staffies as it happens) to control their dogs in the park the other day as they continued to jump up at my 3 yr old.
The reply 'oh they just want to be friends!'
to which I replied 'Well my DD doesn't understand that and I don't want her to be fearful of dogs.'

So, please, however lovely you think your dogs are, don't assume everyone shares your views!

And definitely too many staffies around and so many needing re-homing for some reason!

And, I would agree, bad title OP.
