A support thread for those of us dealing with our rebels without a cause. Jasper is now 11 months old. He has decided that recall is boring. Stay is discretionary. Our food is his food, and if we don't offer to share he'll just nick it. He's also got a bit more mouthy than I'd like. So, we're back to basics. Heel has gone out of the window too, so walks are work at the moment. I'm thinking of trying to whistle train him, and have stocked up on the treats. Does anyone want a swig?

We have been going through this for a few months now. Although with the food she has always been a complete thief!

I swear sometimes I give a command and he looks at me, cocks his head to one side and mulls it over to see what's in it for him. If he could dangle a cigarette from his bottom lip and flip me the bird, he would.

OMG - that's exactly it! With recall she actually stops - looks at me then decides to go in the opposite direction!

Yep He does come back to me. Eventually. And thankfully he never runs up to other people/dogs, so at least he isn't annoying others. I'm praising like crazy when he does obey any command, and trying to reinforce the good stuff. It's like having a wilful toddler again

its not only puppies, we have had our rescue 3 months now (he's 2) and this past week he just stops and looks when I recall him and then runs off in the opposite direction.

In the house he just feels he can totally ignore me and do as he pleases. We are back to basics and he is under house arrest now

It's soo frustrating - yesterday I had to come home and get my DH to go over to the field and get her back! I won't be letting her off the lead today but it seems so cruel.

We have spent the morning practicing recall in the garden. The neighbours now think I'm crackers and the hell hound is sleeping off a bellyful of gravy bones.

mine ran off, to be fair he got spooked by a group of army cadets hiding in the bushes, the other day. Wouldn't come back at all, but he did stop at the road as he isn't allowed to go any further without his lead. I was hunting for him and someone else found him, called the no on his collar and sent DH into a panic as I wasn't with him. Didn't know whether to be cross that he ran off or happy that he didn't cross the road alone Apparently he was just sat on the grass at the edge of the field watching the road

the house arrest is working with the food stealing. He has to be with me wherever I am in the house so he can't sneak into the pantry and eat the food, or his best favourite snack the bin

This is me. Our 'D'dog2 is a nightmare. She nicks all food/paper/rubbish from anywhere. She can't be around the kids toys anymore.

We cant even get her to recall into the house after a wee in the garden.

She's started to get really over excited about all other dogs and wont recall at all when we see one so is constantly on the lead atm.

Training seems to be the only time she couldn't give a fluff about food. Just hands out a and gets on with whatever she was doing. Total nightmare! I'm sure she mentally flips me the bird about 10 times a day.

Oh oh and she has started to eat the kitchen cupboards... the joys.

Patch is 6 months old. I've decided he's going to skip the teenage stage.

We're there too! ScruffPup had decided that he'll play the game at training for half an hour or so, then fuck off on a jaunt around the fields.

Ours sits quietly like a little angel watching your every move. If I put cardboard in the recycling he waits a second and then takes it out again. If I take my dds shoes, boots, clothes, in fact anything that belongs to her upstairs, he waits a second and then takes it down again. He empties clothes from the washing basket and lays it at the front door. We can't even shout him in from the garden because he suits himself and ignores us. He is very cute and sleeps most of the day and night but when he is awake "Dexter rules". He will only sit if you have a treat in fact he won't do anything unless he gets a treat, but only the right kind of treat, ie sausage. I only changed the bed on Monday and today I got home to find mud on the quilt cover and on the pillowcases and a tear on one of them. I then found one of his teddies buried under a pillow. Oh the joys.

Yes, what is it with dogs - they HEAR you, they definately hear you, becaue they stop, they fucking stop and you think, phew - people will think i have him under control and wont tut tut. Then you call them again and you can just see them think "nah" and bugger off full pelt! And then why WHY do you finally retrieve the little buggers and let them walk nicely off, do they say, ah no, i have to go and sniff that dogs arse again!

My rescue is back on lead only after making me look a tit for the nth time. My "older sensible dog" however is very consistant with his recall - he just fucks off

Yup, me too.

Its so irritating because we had him near perfect on recall a few weeks ago.

Now? I stand there like an idiot blowing the whistle while he dances around.

I'm glad I'm not alone. I mean, sorry for you all, it sucks, but misery loves company. As soon as it stops bloody raining I'm going to set up a little agility course in the garden and try and engage his brain a bit. I am armed with sausages and cheddar.

Must be something in the air!!!! Mine ( who to date has been fab!!) ran off after a little girls kite. I felt awful ESP when were in one field and she was in the other. Sadly she started running away which just made it all the more exciting!! After realising the pup wasn't listening I shouted at the girl to stop running and drop the kite. She did and the pup just sat next to the kite happy as you like. No damage caused!!

She also chewed a candle, is generally being a pain not listening and wanting to chase everything. Currently trying various different things!! But long training lead it is until her recall has returned!! Just need to stop the mouthing and the jumping up. Even the big dog is telling her off for lots of things (mainly biting her and jumping on her!).

I say all this and we do have lovely cuddles!!

Mine is not too bad at the moment - but I did see a glimpse of defiance on our walk this morning. When he was tiny he loved coming to recall and would bounce over to you just to get the praise and treat. Now he looks at me, decides if he can be bothered, then casually saunters over. It won't be long until he decides he can't be bothered and buggars off.

He does love socks and underwear. He met me at the front door, wagging furiously, with a pair of my knickers in his mouth

well at least he didn't great the emergency plumber with a pair of your dirty knickers at 11pm like mine did

hocuspocus My "D"Dad still thinks it's hilarious to regularly remind everyone of the time the family dog came into the crowded living room with a pair of my old knickers in it's mouth at their Wedding Anniversary party when I was about 7 . I'm 42 now, the joke is wearing a bit thin!!
Have just been into the kitchen with the DCs' dinner plates to find our 7 month old pup happily chewing one of the kitchen stools . Have sprayed everything with that anti-chew stuff but I swear he likes the taste

Ah! So it's not just mine then!

Phew!

I tried the anti chew stuff on my hoover ( crazy mutt attacks it). He spent several minutes licking it all off again, then went back to killing it.

Oh.My.God. She has just ripped off part of my kitchen cupboard.

Help me not kill her till she dies from it.
