Fellow dog walkers!

I'm worried about SUMMER. You'd think I would rejoice at the idea of no longer trudging around with my big bad waterproof coat on, but no.

I'm worried about the lack of POCKETS.

Today I had with me; poo bags, tennis ball, bag of hot dog treats, clicker, more poo bags, my keys, dog lead, tuggy rope toy, training dummy, ball thrower, my phone, iPod and my cigs.

What the BUGGERY will I do when I don't have a large selection of pockets?!

Mmmm I wonder this too. May have to resort to some kind of bag...

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 17/03/2012 18:03

I had much the same thought yesterday, with much the same paraphernalia in various muddy pockets.

belindarose · 17/03/2012 18:04

Rucksack? Or will it have to be a bum bag after all for easy access?

feesh · 17/03/2012 18:04

A bum bag, you just have to get over the shame. Ours fell apart, so I recently ordered this (hasn't arrived yet). www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001BYKTXM/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

You could also wear a rucksack and swing it around to the front to get things out of it.

Cargo trousers/shorts are also essential as long as everything you're carrying doesn't weigh them down to the point you accidentally expose your bottom

ditavonteesed · 17/03/2012 18:04

I have an over the shoulder handbag, has big rings for the handle, these rings are cover in clip on versions of everythign, poo bags, treat bag. there is more stuff outside my bag than in it.

Scuttlebutter · 17/03/2012 18:07

I wear cropped jeans, solely because that gives me four good pockets. Car keys, phone, poo bags, occasional biscuit. No ipod - I like to concentrate on the dogs (but often am walking three singlehanded so need to concentrate). Treats can go into little treat pouch that you can fix to your belt.

I know it's a S & B no-no, but bum bags are at least very useful and practical. Maybe there's scope for someone to design a nice one?

Also, those photographer style gilets might be an idea? Masses of pockets, pouches, etc and no sleeves. You often see bird watchers wearing them, with lots of lenses for camera, pocket books, thermos etc. Though again, sadly, not the most elegant of garments.

Inthepotty · 17/03/2012 18:13

I've always got jeans on but skinny ones as I have the bandy legs of a nine year old boy. Can't get much in the pockets. Could possibly stretch to a clip on bag for treats and fashion an attractive carrier-of-tuggy-thing from my lead?!

Hmmmm. . I'll look like my MIL on a holiday jaunt.

I still chuckle when I think back to that ridiculous episode of Trinny and Tranny when they tried to give makeovers to a group of dogwalkers to make them stylish....

CakeMeIAmYours · 17/03/2012 18:40

Oh, how we laughed when those Apprentice candidates made a dog-walking crap stuff carrier a few years ago.

Turns out they may have been on to something after all.

I use a messenger style bag like this

I like to think it is practical and (kind of) stylish.

Oh well, I'm sure the dog doesn't mind either way.

BarryNormansSofa · 17/03/2012 18:55

I have done bum bags but have got this from New Look .

Enough for poo bags, extra ball , phone , loose money and car keys .

RedwingWinter · 17/03/2012 19:17

I was wondering about this today too while I was tipping all the dog biscuit crumbs out of my pocket.

You could get a backpack for the dog and let the dog carry some of it. Not sure I would entrust the dog with car keys though in case he ran off ...

toboldlygo · 17/03/2012 23:50

I use a bumbag. Blush A proper official one with our training club's logo on it. Not in the least bit stylish but I never have to worry about running out of poo bags, treats etc. as I can carry loads.

Scuttlebutter · 18/03/2012 00:36

That's the trouble, Boldly - not stylish but very, very practical. I'm usually sporting lots of fleece, sensible shoes, no make up when dog walking (not that I wear much anyway), usually a fleecy hat and dog walking trousers selected for pockets and comfort rather than high fashion. Actually the dogs look very much smarter - beautiful collars and leads, and nice coats. Blush

And is it just me or is it frightening how poo bags and dog biscuits slowly migrate to every handbag you own, even ones you never take out dog walking?!! Shock

Am having minor meltdown at even the thought of trusting ours with car keys. Grin On wet days, they'd be straight back in the boot.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 18/03/2012 01:50

Well, just sit down and ask yourself this question. . . . . What did I do last summer?

I have a buggy to carry all my dog walking paraphernalia :o

MrsGypsy · 19/03/2012 16:45

I have found (empty) poo bags in the pockets of every single coat that I own. And in all my handbags. And usually in the deep recesses of the coat pocket, a couple of broken dog treats with lots of crumbs.

For the summer, I have a couple of pairs of 3/4 length cotton trousers, slightly loose fitting (please God don't let them be tight on me this year I know I have been eating like a pig all winter ) which means I can usually fit a few things in the pockets. First thing in the morning, when it's still cool, I wear a padded gilet. With pockets. Never leave the house without pockets on. Cannot, cannot wear a bumbag. Noooooo. Not never. Not even when I'm old and demented.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 19/03/2012 17:20

My friend has a sort of holster thing that's like a bumbag and attaches over her shoulder and around her chest. It's good.

MothershipG · 19/03/2012 17:26

You need a HoundBag! I have the black one and love it to pieces! But then I've got a bit of a thing about bags with a purpose...

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 19/03/2012 17:29

I have a Bumbag. Bought it off the market for a fiver a while ago now. Its great apart from the pocket with the dodgy zip that i can't use It gets rather damp smelling from all the salivary balls in it but I don't have to put the balls in my pockets!

In it I have
bag of treats (currently empty),
4 balls,
1 emergency Halti,
1 emergency fabric muzzle,
1 gundog whistle usually ignored
1 Sheepdog Whistle can't even blow that one,
Poo bags,
1 clicker (don't know where else to keep it)
and one small multi tool thingy on a keyring. I'm not sure where I got it from but the pliers bit was very useful for extracting 2cm thorn from spaniel paw last week.

always prepared!
Grin

feesh · 19/03/2012 18:57

The one I linked to at the top of the thread arrived today and I really like it on a practical level will look like a proper twat wearing it though

Inthepotty · 19/03/2012 19:10

I'm still debating re bumbag.

Today I had poo bags stuffed in my wellie, phone up my sleeve, fag tucked attractively behind me ear I'm one of those guilty smokers who hides behind bushes and bike sheds looking shifty toy tucked under my arm in a matronly type way and had to carry a whole hot dog sausage in my hand ooooh er

OP posts:
Catsmamma · 19/03/2012 19:19

keys in one side of bra, phone in other, and I keep all the rest of it in a peg bag I bought in dunelm which I clip to a belt loop

but i don't take toys or very many treats. Sometimes I clip the keys to the carabiner doodah instead and the bag is big enough to pop the filled poo bags in so you don't have to mince about with them at arms length for the rest of the walk.

feesh · 20/03/2012 10:35

If I put my keys down my bra, it would literally double the size of my boobs.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 20/03/2012 10:40

I have a long handled bag for dog stuff. balls, chucker, emergency halti, long line, brushes. I wear a fleece and keys and cigs and phone in one pocket, dog poo bags and some treats in other.

OR Get yourself a cheap messenger bag and use it for dogs. I have one that I take to shows, can get purse, keys, cigs, treats, half check and brush in and it looks ok. It is black so goes with anything.

I just cant bring myself to wear a bumbag, despite buying one for dog walking.

mmmdanone · 20/03/2012 13:15

In summer I have in the past had my keys on a lanyard round my neck. You could also attach a nice i-phone/blackberry case like this www.cathkidston.co.uk/c-1033-gadget-cases.aspx to it, but I suppose it wouldn't hold much dog paraphernalia!
