stray dog and pups by my gate (repost from chat)

There is a box with pups which I reckon are a week or so old. The pups are in a box, but the mum is loose. If im a distance away shes happily nosing around in the box, if I approach she legs it to a few feet away and barks followed my a small growl at me. Ive not gone too close as yet.

Ive rang the dog warden, apparently they will only come if I can catch her as they cant spend their time trying to catch the dog. Rang local dog charity and have left a message, although last time we had a stray dog up here, they werent that brilliant.

Mum looks half starved, so Ive stuck some dog food and water down. Ive left the yard gate open so she can move the pups inside to the shelter of the stable (as its raining) if she wants.

Now what?

Well, she's house trained which is a plus!

youjusthaventearnedityetbaby · 06/10/2011 23:18

So pleased she's in your house :) have just come to check this thread as the wind's howling outside here... made me think of the pups!
Hope Rosie settles in and your other dogs take to her...
Looking forward to pics :)

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 07/10/2011 07:39

My friend who fosters for ukgsd has just had a whelping bitch and she had her in the utility room/conservatory with a large stairgate to separate her from her other dogs. This works as the dogs could see each other and smell each other but the mum knew that her pups were safe.

Good on you for looking after Rosie and her pups, the hardest part will be weaning in a few weeks, so handle the pups and mum now. Even just being with her, talking to her and giving her some treats will increase her trust in you.

I'm not a dog expert by any means, but I've always found clicker training fab. My dog is 2 now and we still teach him new commands with it.

Mrsfluff · 07/10/2011 08:55

Aw, so happy to find this thread and hear about Rosie and the pups. Well done, you sound fab. I'm sure you'll be a very happy, 4 dog, household Grin

PeriPathetic · 07/10/2011 12:40

How wonderful! I salute you Grin

saffronwblue · 08/10/2011 00:12

I love this thread. Hope it is all going well. So you're currently a 7 dog household?

fallenninja · 08/10/2011 10:41

Yes currently a 7 dog household Shock plus some chickens, a pony, and some cats .. oh and the DCs

Some updated photos of the pups and 2 rubbish ones of Rosie. Have sexed the pups and we have 2 dogs and a bitch. Let the naming commence.

Am going to get a decent pic of each pup up over the weekend. They really are lovely though.

You sound a lovely lovely woman Smile

Vallhala · 08/10/2011 10:53

Oh my Rosie's beautiful!

Yours sounds like the perfect household (well, I'll pass on the DCs, you can keep them, two's enough thank you very much indeed!). :o

As an aside, I see that one of my messages was deleted. Anyone recall what it was please (remind me by pm if preferred)? I'm just wondering what I'm supposed to have done to piss off some whinging Winnie this time.

I wish I had room for Rosie, she looks stunning, loads of Shep in her. :) Not that I'm biased of course, oh no, not me... :o

WitchesBrewIsMyFriend · 08/10/2011 11:52
