stray dog and pups by my gate (repost from chat)

There is a box with pups which I reckon are a week or so old. The pups are in a box, but the mum is loose. If im a distance away shes happily nosing around in the box, if I approach she legs it to a few feet away and barks followed my a small growl at me. Ive not gone too close as yet.

Ive rang the dog warden, apparently they will only come if I can catch her as they cant spend their time trying to catch the dog. Rang local dog charity and have left a message, although last time we had a stray dog up here, they werent that brilliant.

Mum looks half starved, so Ive stuck some dog food and water down. Ive left the yard gate open so she can move the pups inside to the shelter of the stable (as its raining) if she wants.

Now what?

Well done - I'm glad Mum has done what we hoped she would.

Puppy food for Mum would be good as it's got that additional bit of nutrition in it. Lots of warmth if you can do it because I think the weather is on the turn and if they're tiny they won't be able to self regulate.

She won't have squished a pup in the box, will she? If she has you'll have to fish it out as soon as she's comfortable with you.

Then to decide what to do with all of them. I'm too soft and would end up keeping them all. Blush

Bless the poor mum... how can someone do that :(

Hope all is ok and she's starting to trust you a bit... any more pics yet?!!

Keep up the good work! Oh, and I think 4 dogs is a good, even number :)

wildfig · 03/10/2011 12:31

Really glad to hear she's come in and is eating - poor Rosie. Well done you, dog-angel-lady-ninja.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/10/2011 17:06

I'm so glad your thinking of keeping her, what a bastard to do that to an animal.

I bet she would be a loyal dog if you help her, she must be so scared now.

Those pups are tiny! good job its mild at the moment.

Crosshair · 03/10/2011 18:21

Hows pups and mum doing? :)

glitch · 03/10/2011 18:29

Whoever left them made a really good choice when they picked your gate to leave them next too.

You sound like you are doing such a brilliant job with them. Smile

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/10/2011 18:40

fallenninja you sound lovely.
Mum and pups are so lucky to have you looking after them.
I'm now 'watching' this thread.

ChooChooWowWow · 04/10/2011 14:51

fallenninja You have actually made me a little weepy. What lucky dogs to be left by your gate.
You are doing a brilliant job. Please keep us updated. Grin

HeidiHole · 04/10/2011 15:01

I'm watching this and thanking god that she was left by YOUR gate. What a terrible thing to happen.. how could anyone do that? The mother must be terrified poor little mite.

You are such a fantastic person for looking after her and feeding her. Without being patronising.. well done!! :)

misdee · 04/10/2011 19:37

Hi,

Sorry for lack of update to now. Been busy busy busy.

Rosie and the 3 pups are fine. They are no longer in the stable, they are now in my house Smile

I have spoken to my vet, and have made an appointment for her (and the pups) next week to get checked over.

I shall try and get some better pictures of her and the pups up, but everytime I go near here, she comes over for cuddles! So all my pictures just end up with her nose or an ear!! She is still quite timid, in that if anyone else approachs she crouches down into a very submissive position.

She had met the kids and the other dogs, although it was over a stair gate and I shall continue to keep them separated for the time being.

She doesnt obey any basic training at all. Doesnt sit, stay, come, heel etc, which is a bit of a bind, so if anyone has any advice on teaching an older dog basic obedience that would be great.

In the house :)

My parents got a rescue dog who was two who had no training whatsoever. It was a shock to have a dog who didn't even know "sit". I think they just did it how you would a puppy eg, held a treat over his nose and said "sit", they automatically sit if you hold it in a certain position, and then they rewarded him. They found it hard at first because he is a big dog and would push pat them on stairs, etc, almost knocking them down. My mum said she had to be really consistent or he would spot a loophole! He's beautifully trained now, so it must be possible!

I think I love you. :o

SoupDragon · 06/10/2011 14:14

Wow, that's a big step forward from the dog who wouldn't come in the gate :)

misdee · 06/10/2011 16:56
Grin

can i say though, she may have training but you may be usng a different tone/commands/hand movement to her previous home.when we rehomed tom the fosterer onsite said he had had no training. he had, and belive or not he was better at training that ralph, who is a bit of an airhead at times. Blush

but Rosie has landed on her feet with you, hope the vet visit goes well and she settles down.

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 06/10/2011 18:03

oh that is brilliant news. I am so pleased for Rosie and her 3 pups. we need names for those puppies.

Good luck at the vets. Now off for a look at pics.

chickchickchicken · 06/10/2011 20:10

Thanks from an animal lover for what you are doing

(if i lived nearer i would offer to help too)

fallenninja · 06/10/2011 21:24

Yep shes in the futility room. Im still saying its temporary, but ive named her, Ive brought her a large bed, and ive been pratting about trying to find a food she appears to like (shes a fussy eater) so im pretty sure ill end up with 4 dogs.

She only came in last night. I was a bit unsure, but we had a really crazy rainstorm, and she was howling and barking at about 10ish. I went out to her to check she was OK. Ive been sitting with her and staying up there a bit when ive been putting the food down, but really had only been getting a brief stroke of her head, as didnt want to mess with her when she was with her pups in case I upset her. However last night, every time I kept going to leave she kept barking like mad and following me down the path to home (i keep the gate between the stables and the drive shut). In the end I shut my dogs up in the kitchen, and left the gate and front door open and she came in!!! Shock She just came in and plonked herself down on the floor, shed lie there for 10 mins then go off back up the yard to the pups, then come back. In the end I trapped her in the house in case she went nuts when I handled the pups and went and got the pups and brought them in. Shut her and pups in futility and went to bed.

Shes lovely, but a bit unsure with me being around the pups. Not nasty or anything, but you can tell from her behaviour that shes not too comfortable. Has let me handle them though. They all seem in good health. Eyes just starting to open on ones eyes so assuming a couple of weeks old. Vets told me to just keep handling them a little bit, but not too much because of distressing her. Im feeding her 4 times a day, with Pets at Home Puppy Food.

I think know shes staying

music Im hoping she will train easily. My other dogs are all good, but ive always had them from puppies, so never had one thats quite big but doesnt listen. Its not a massive worry as at the moment im not taking her out anywhere, shes going in and out the dog flap and doing her business on the drive, as im not sure about mixing her with the others yet.
