i asked this last week and got laughed out the door!! to be fair. i also asked if i should get my dof boots aswell, so they were right to laugh.

If you've got a labradoodle, you've got a mixture of two dogs who were specifically bred to go into freeeeeezing water to retrieve game. So on balance, it's a nah from me. (Spend your money on cashmere gloves for yourself! )

I've just ordered one for cat-like puppy, but she is Whippet.

Not sure re: The Devil Dog. Dh reckons he was shivering last night, so I'll see how is later and perhaps order him one if he seems cold/shivery.

Imo coats like this are fine, but a big no no to this sort of boaksome ridiculousness.

Depends on what sort of dog and what you're doing.

I've got a shorthaired dachshund with seasonal alopaecia so he has a bald tum in winter, poor sos. He's fine when we're walking but nowadays he's standing with me at the bus stop when I meet DD from school and was looking chilly so I got him an Equafleece jumper - he's much cosier, and its also good for when we leave him in the car while we birdwatch before walking him in this weather.

It depends on the dog and what you are doing.

If it has a fairly thick coat and your walks are active, probably not.

If it lacks coat or you spend time standing around with it anywhere or even do a lot of lead walking then maybe.

If you have a whippet then you need at least seven

Puppies and old dogs are more likely to need keeping warm just like babies and old folk.

I think most dogs out in high winds and driving rain need protection just like we do, I don't understand why it is seen as being so wussy, I think mostly it is only kind tbh.

we got one for our dog a couple of weeks ago

she's a lab x collie and is now very elderly (nearly 14) and so a bit doddery and slow. We walk after the school run so she's waiting at school for 10 minutes each time and was getting a bit chilly. She was a bit suspicious at first, but now very happy in it :)

Booyhoo Dd1 would buy something like that. Fortunately she is not old enough for a debit card for another ten years, by which time I hope to have drummed some sense into her.

Im here and I poked fun last week Booyhoo.

Still think coats and boots are mad on dogs unless they are a hairless breed, or old as the hills, or have very little fur (or chance to run around) like a greyhound or whippet.

Anything else has a decent fur coat - one of the best insulators in the world.

bless her. i wanted a pet monkey and a pet lamb (not a sheep, a lamb and it would always be a lamb) when i was 6.

My lab would go insane I tried to put a coat on her and her hardcore gundog mates would point and laugh.

That and it would be sopping wet and 50% heavier with mud 10 mins after stepping out of the door.

My Mum bought one her her 'grandson' (my nutty Boxer) last year when it was freezing and she felt sorry for him. He looked like he was suicidal when I put it on him, and was far too embarassed to walk in it! Told Mum that he ate it to shut her up.

Really its not hard to tell when your dog is cold. If he's not cold he doesn't need a coat. My last dachs though shorthaired wasn't bald so he didn't need one (except sometimes when we stopped to admire the view at the top of a mountain in a howling gale, but that was never for very long!)

If he is cold, then there's plenty of sensible options now.

I doubt a young labradoodle (if that's what a 'doddle' is?) will want one but if he is cold, then there's plenty of sensible enough options now.

I keep going paddling in the freezing cold sea (in wellies now, but the wellies leak because he's chewed them!) to try and tempt him in, and he just sits and barks at me like I'm a nutter!

So you're standing in the freezing sea in leaky wellies... your dog may have a point, you know!

sea water = not stinky or muddy enough.

Try him near a particularly foetid pond.

Have just done a school run with The Devil Dog in the snow and he will not be getting a winter coat. I can see what DH means when he says 'shivering' but he is not cold

Some dogs do shiver when they aren't cold at all, don't they? You can tell the difference though.

I want to encase my cocker in an all in one waterproof number so he can't get muddy, wet or roll in assorted animal excrement.
