bf bought 2 of my dogs matching coats the other day, one of them does need it really, the other not so much

they have hoods!

it wasnt fixed back the other day and the pup started wandering about blindly crashing into things in excitement to get out fro a walk, like one of those wind up toys that bounce off the skirting boards and carries on elsewhere

i have to say that both dogs cant wait to get into them when they are brought out

they do look funny though in khaki parkas Grin

hoods! LOL :o

I've ordered a coat with a detachable snood for my greyhound - he's going to look like an 80s throwback!

Dexterrocks · 25/11/2010 18:40

I was told to get my dog one by my very down to earth and sensible dog trainer.

I ignored her and paid the price.

We now have heaps of snow and the dog was shaking and shivering yesterday. Needless to say he now has a sensible blue waterproof coat with reflectors on it. The difference in his happiness outside in the snow was enough to convince me I had done the right thing. He loves it!
He is a collie x by the way, a rescue dog and still a touch skinny but not the waif he was when we got him.
I persuaded myself that if he has to get used to living in a cenrally heated house, he is not going to develop as thick a coat as a dog kept outside would in winter and will therefore get cold when he goes outside.

Piffle · 25/11/2010 22:36

My 2 yr old ridgeback girl needs one, she's a cold dog at best and has actual chilblains on her ears which ulcerate...
So top notch padded coat and a snood
Our 10 wk old puppy has a coat as she is very fine haired but she's only out 40 mins walking so negligible but she looks rather gorgeous :)
My dogs are African, they don't do cold

MrsSnaplegs · 25/11/2010 22:51

Piffle - my RR also has a coat and starts wearing it from October inthe evenings if it's getting chilly! She's a real woosy in the cold! However put her in the same room as an open fireplace and she will be asleep on the hearth!

lou33 · 25/11/2010 23:03

the dogs have been positioned around the fire or the radiators this evening

YankNCock · 25/11/2010 23:20

DH just asked me this evening if our 12 week old puppy needed a coat. Well, at least he's taking an interest!

Puppy is about the size and similar looks of an adult jack russell, all we know is mum was possibly a staff cross (came in pregnant as a stray, puppies born at dogs' home).

I kind of think he's ok, but I grew up in Wisconsin where you hardly ever saw dogs in coats. Maybe I'm being harsh? He's not normally out for longer than 20 minutes at a time, and I think he's probably spend all his time trying to eat the coat.

kid · 26/11/2010 07:25

I saw a local dog wearing a hoodie recently, it was so cute. I mentioned to dh about getting one for my baby puppy but he laughed and laughed and laughed ........

I won't getting a coat for my extra hairy springer.

DrNortherner · 26/11/2010 07:46

I won't be putting my lab in a coat. Don't think a labdoodle needs one eithr.

controlfreakery · 26/11/2010 11:39

dooin! ta v much for that second link... have ordered ddog 3 new outfits!

DooinMeCleanin · 26/11/2010 17:21

Poor, poor ddog will be ridiculed by all the other sensible doggies at the park, you do know that don't you?

And if he is anything like mine, he will only roll in the first mud puddle he sees. Or is it just long haired, white dogs who do this??

controlfreakery · 26/11/2010 21:42

my ddog cares little for the opinion of others: she knows she is totally gorgeous and is dignified at all times. she is not keen on water or mud... Wink.
have ordered black tshirt with "love" tatoo in bling and pink and black argyle sweater.... she can have them for christmas.
thanks again!

I am a firm believer of keeping dogs as dogs and not dressing them up but in the snow my collies get really horrible snow balls on them and in between their feet.

The snow balls between their feet are really painful to them and they can not walk. So if it is snowing my hairy dogs do get a coat but not the short coated labs or staffy.

Not quite got to the boots yet but it would be preferable to me having to hold the dogs feet with my warm hand to melt the snowballs so we can get home!
