In The Catch, Ed Collier, played by Jason Watkins, is a proud husband, father and local fisherman who becomes determined to do whatever it takes to keep his family together. But when rich, handsome younger man Ryan Wilson (Aneurin Barnard) (Peaky Blinders, Time, The Goldfinch, Dunkirk), enters the life of his daughter Abbie Collier, Poppy Gilbert (Chloe, Stay Close, Leonardo, Perfect Addiction) and threatens to take her away from him, Ed finds his life spiraling out of control.

A dark secret from Ed’s past returns to haunt him, he risks losing everything he’s worked so hard to achieve. As his determination to solve the mystery veers dangerously into obsession, the stage is set for a chilling climax leaving both Ed and Ryan’s lives hanging in the balance...

The Catch will likely give you nightmares when it arrives on Channel 5 in early 2023. This four-part thriller follows a fisherman whose family life seems to spiral out of control when his daughter goes out with a shady new boyfriend. It also has a wonderful cast that includes Jason Watkins, Aneurin Barnard, Poppy Gilbert, Cathy Belton and Brenda Fricker.

Set against the hauntingly beautiful coastline of the south-west of England, this suspense-driven drama revolves around the themes of toxic masculinity and grief. The emotional complex story raises the pertinent moral questions; should we be judged by the actions of our distant past and at what point do we have to stop blaming other people for the life we’ve led?

Des star Jason Watkins says: "I’ve always loved thrillers on-screen and The Catch has all the ingredients to keep audiences hooked. Three-dimensional characters, a family unit under stress, with a tragedy at the heart — all brilliantly framed in the thriller genre.

Do you mean to say they changed Ed's profession to fisherman just to play on the lame metaphor of 'the catch'? (Ryan being presumably the catch: rich, good-looking...)

martinisforeveryone · 09/02/2023 17:06

I didn't find out what Ed's profession was in the original novel, but yes I presume it was to play on the fisherman aspect. In the book Ryan was meant to be a fabulous catch as a partner...or is he?

I’ve got to Google the original book now.

That seems a logical conclusion to draw @Blondeshavemorefun

The bit at the end showing what Ryan got up to put me in mind of Happy Valley and poor Kirsten 😢

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2023 17:30

Ditto. Esp when put in reverse and thump thump went the wheels

Was Abbie pregnant at the end? She seemed to be rubbing a bump. Yet she is going to Australia?

harrassedmumto3 · 11/02/2023 11:10

Ohhhh, this accent is an assault on my poor Scottish ears Wink
Sorry - and I love most English accents - but this one is awful.

purpleme12 · 11/02/2023 11:55

I don't think she's pregnant

butterpuffed · 11/02/2023 17:14

Just seen it . Maybe you're right , Ryan could be the son . But why would he kill George ....

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/02/2023 17:52

Coz he likes his gf and wanted her back

daffodilandtulip · 13/02/2023 13:06

Just caught up ... Ed is an idiot and the wife is annoying, and Abby isn't much better!

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/02/2023 21:00

Reasonably good ending. I really did laugh out loud when Abby rushed at Ryan in the woods and stabbed him. Good job she knew exactly where to find Ryan and her Dad !

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/02/2023 22:13

Was she preg

She stroked her stomach and looked rounded ....

But then she was drinking bubbly and going travelling

Yes I thought they were showing her as pregnant.

A bit over dramatic but a good ending overall. Not the best show with the best acting but I enjoyed it.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 15/02/2023 22:57

In the book it ended with her having his baby. But other than character names, and the title, there was literally nothing in this that was as it was in the book. All that back story of Eds was new, as well as being a fisherman, and in the book Ryan killed him.

Not familiar with the book - did the writer have anything to do with this programme or do you think someone just bought the rights and chopped away? A shame when that happens, someone has taken time to construct a story and characters and then (aside from editing and tweaking to make it tv length) it becomes something else.

I did somewhat enjoy it (4 episodes is a decent length, not too commitment heavy!) - although didn't feel it was Jason Watkins at his best (I usually love everything he does). I didn't feel the misdirects were particularly good and it ended pretty much as I expected.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2023 11:18

I've said many times I don't get why a tv series likes a book so much to produce jr but then changes story /plot 😡😡

So in the book ed gets killed ?

Does she really want a baby with the man who set up /likes her dad

Would you really go travelling while preg

Ending predictable I guess, called it on Ryan being son of victim. 😃The whole is she a lesbian/is she pregnant stuff with Abbie didn't make a lick of sense however you slice it. In fact her poorly written character rather reminded me of Cat in The Light In The Hall.

duc748 · 16/02/2023 11:56

Also, the implication that Ed's got off scot-free?! He's pretty much admitted to manslaughter, FFS!

JMSA · 16/02/2023 13:18

I saw the ending a mile off and usually I'm the last to guess these things! I'm glad it's over really. The dad was beyond annoying - I was willing Ryan to off him by the end Grin - and the accent was like nails to a chalkboard.

duc748 · 16/02/2023 13:28

JW's accent always seems to take in a Grand Tour, including Bristol, Cornwall, and various other locations. Twas the same in Nobbs and Mcdonald, or whatever it was called.

butterpuffed · 16/02/2023 14:26

Well, the actors in this aren't going to win any Oscars ! The first three eps weren't too bad but the final one was unbelievably OTT. Good old Channel 5 , I'm addicted to their dramas !

I noticed Trevor Eve was the Exec Producer , he was good in Waking the Dead.
