In The Catch, Ed Collier, played by Jason Watkins, is a proud husband, father and local fisherman who becomes determined to do whatever it takes to keep his family together. But when rich, handsome younger man Ryan Wilson (Aneurin Barnard) (Peaky Blinders, Time, The Goldfinch, Dunkirk), enters the life of his daughter Abbie Collier, Poppy Gilbert (Chloe, Stay Close, Leonardo, Perfect Addiction) and threatens to take her away from him, Ed finds his life spiraling out of control.

A dark secret from Ed’s past returns to haunt him, he risks losing everything he’s worked so hard to achieve. As his determination to solve the mystery veers dangerously into obsession, the stage is set for a chilling climax leaving both Ed and Ryan’s lives hanging in the balance...

The Catch will likely give you nightmares when it arrives on Channel 5 in early 2023. This four-part thriller follows a fisherman whose family life seems to spiral out of control when his daughter goes out with a shady new boyfriend. It also has a wonderful cast that includes Jason Watkins, Aneurin Barnard, Poppy Gilbert, Cathy Belton and Brenda Fricker.

Set against the hauntingly beautiful coastline of the south-west of England, this suspense-driven drama revolves around the themes of toxic masculinity and grief. The emotional complex story raises the pertinent moral questions; should we be judged by the actions of our distant past and at what point do we have to stop blaming other people for the life we’ve led?

Des star Jason Watkins says: "I’ve always loved thrillers on-screen and The Catch has all the ingredients to keep audiences hooked. Three-dimensional characters, a family unit under stress, with a tragedy at the heart — all brilliantly framed in the thriller genre.

Is Revenge worth watching. I have 3 months of free Apple TV where I can get it. Also is this the American series in the Hamptons?

@Blondeshavemorefun

OP, I'm starting to take it very very personally Wink that you don't include me in your list. I watch /am on nearly every tv thread you start. I go right with you back to Revenge!

I'm on all of Blondes threads. Have been for years but I change my name loads.

martinisforeveryone · 02/02/2023 10:33

Am I alone in thinking that Ed’s really not very bright? You can see all the moves where he’s literally setting himself up.

@Blondeshavemorefun might I be added to the new drama roll call please. I do follow the threads, but also name changed over time.

Oblomov22 · 02/02/2023 11:10

No lazy it's cheesy shit. But Blondes and I and others loved it at the time. Grin

duc748 · 02/02/2023 11:39

B/f gave Ed the car and house keys knowing he'd poke around, that was obvious. And I thought he was going to set Ed up for stealing the VC. But at the time, I didn't think Ed took it, just looked at it. But later, it seemed Ed had it (and was giving to put it back?), so he must have. And nobody would call a VC 'the medal'.

It's enjoyable enough, but you don't believe a word of it. I don't believe Jason Watkins as a fisherman for a start!

duc748 · 02/02/2023 11:40

going to put it back

duc748 · 02/02/2023 11:42

Also, why spend thousands on a private dick when George is happy to do the legwork for free? 😀

That was a bit of a channel 5 drama moment when Ed's wife unexpectedly hurled a wine bottle at the wall !!

Is Ed totally dumb ~ he already knew Ryan had noticed the medal had gone , so did he think that putting it back would make him forget about it disappearing .

duc748 · 02/02/2023 17:10

Well, quite. But why take it in the first place? Nothing Ed does seems to make any sense.

martinisforeveryone · 02/02/2023 18:16

Absolutely. Quoting myself from this morning

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun thank you in anticipation. I'm watching more evening TV these days and always looking for good suggestions.

BloggersBlog · 02/02/2023 19:39

She hurled that bottle like she was throwing a netball from the side. She really isn't a good actress. Is she trying to be scary? Just annoying.

Jason Watkins makes it worth persevering though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/02/2023 15:07

So we know Ed can lie easily as seemed sincere when said didn't take the medal

wife wasted a good drink snd now has stained walls 😂😂

ex is dev convinced new bf is dodgy

obv the keys meant he was going to snoop

so who is lying

and who from the navy is sending messages

dud anyone see the baseball bat by the drivers door when talking to pi

I wouldn't be too surprised if the twist was that the b/f wasn't dodgy after all. Even though he hasn't behaved like a totally straight-up guy. Ed's clearly done something to be ashamed of in his Navy days, at the very least. Paint by numbers plotting would be that b/f is the son of Ed's Navy 'victim'?

martinisforeveryone · 03/02/2023 16:27

It does remind me of the Unforgotten police college storyline.

Did we find out how Abbie met Ryan? What if he sought her out just because she's Ed's daughter?

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/02/2023 17:25

Oh I like that @duc748

Yeah. Ed is clearly unhinged. Punching the lifeguard when he was only trying to help?! Confused

purpleme12 · 05/02/2023 17:43

Well he believes the lifeguard is sabotaging his boat... So he doesn't think the lifeguard's intentions are genuine, that's why he punched him

Romeiswheretheheartis · 08/02/2023 17:50

I haven't watched any of this yet, but I've read the book and Ed definitely wasn't a fisherman!

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2023 17:53

Why do they change plots in books

They must like them enough to make the series

OP posts:
martinisforeveryone · 09/02/2023 10:59

Did no one else watch last night, or did watch and nothing to say?

I’ve got to Google the original book now.

martinisforeveryone · 09/02/2023 14:22

Well that was a mistake as I came across the plot including the ending, although to be honest I'm not that bothered about carrying on with it as it all seems so predictable.

It's relocated and Ed's changed profession, which I didn't get to the bottom of, and the timeline of Abbie's relationship seems less accelerated on TV. Grandma seems to have a terminal illness rather than dementia and so much more. So it's kind of the same but totally different.

What I did notice last night is that Trevor Eve, the TE, is executive director.

BloggersBlog · 09/02/2023 16:00

Producer : I know - there is this great book, with a few twists and turns - let's make it into a TV series! But instead of Ed's profession, we will make him a fisherman.

Instead of the wife going away for work as an actress - we will make her an annoying simpering woman caring for her mum! And being fancied by another beardy fellow.

In fact instead of EVERYHING being found out by Ed about Ryan - we will get him to employ a bad acting PI.

Actually, let's just keep the names and change 75% of every blooming thing we liked in the book
