Indeed, but what other explanations for that level of obesity could there be?

It wouldn't have been much of a programme in terms of content had they NOT shown them in their usual, day-to-day routines

It was about their personal story of obesity and how they were planning to progress with it, after all

I'm not judging. I just feel really sad for the kids. Other children and adults can be very cruel, everyone on some level wants to fit in.

I worry that one of my children is overweight. They seem OK on the charts but everyone always remarks on how 'big' they are for their age. You just want to spare them from unhappiness. I feel the same about those kids too, they are just children.

I read somewhere that most parents of overweight kids do not realise that they are overweight.

Lonicera · 11/01/2010 22:24

yes it made me feel sad for those poor kids.

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 11/01/2010 23:11

def worse this week than last, i think because they are so young and certainly the parents seemed different this week too. I wanted to slap some of those parents.

The kids choose! its the paretns that buy

They take the food out of the cupboard! So move it to a higher shelf

I cant stand to see them sad! Just wait a few years then

very sad for those children but nice to see some of the parents are trying to make changes, its never easy to make big changes.

But I think the comment about not liking the fact the school meals are healthy and that her little girl looks better fat as shes more cuddly was very indeed

mellymel65 · 12/01/2010 00:04

i actually went off and sobbed after the filming it has impacted on my life and we have made changes in our life. yes we were bad but now we are good we cant loose it overnight and have no magic wands. doing this programe was for me a harsh reality check which we have taken on bord. kelsie has been snorkeling for ages before this doc was on tv and she did gymnastics and majorettes at school we walk as we dont have a car and now i cook one dinner a night as even my did you notice skinny son is eating much better as he is a junk food child. my girls are the veg and fruit eaters the biscuits kelsie got out had been in the cupbord for ages as we dont eat em kelsie scraped the sugar off as i dont use it much and she was filming with suzanne on her own had i seen that it would not have happened i was told kelsie was talking to her about food lables and what they ment when she came back in the room. they didnt say we had already done the mend type course and thats how they recruited us for the program. kelsie is doing really well she hasnt put any weight on since and she is happy she was happy then and she is stil happy now which i think as a parent is the most important thing for kelsie

mellymel65 · 12/01/2010 00:20

good editing we used to have one after snorkeling we dont now but we was made to have that take away that night as they had filmed on a sunday u do the figuring out what kelsie ment im not defending this but i do have three sons who are very thin so i must be doing something right or is it genetics or metabolisim i dont know. all i know is we are doing something possertive about it now so any bad comments will be changed to good if they do film us again.

SomeGuy · 12/01/2010 00:29

If they did film you again, they would still spin it to tell whatever story the producer wants to tell. Shots of scraping sugar off the biscuits were so clearly scripted to push their point.

I would steer well clear.

Theochris · 12/01/2010 11:14

Aw Melly, I'm not surprised. To be honest everyone I have ever personally known to be involved with a TV crew or a paper has the same to say. They do engineer it just to make you look exactly as the story they want to tell.

My boss was once interviewed for Horizon and they lit it so it looked liked we worked in the dark!

diddl · 12/01/2010 12:13

Just watching it and OMG-the portion sizes!

I also have to agree that if the cräp isn´t in the house then the children can´t eat it.

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 12/01/2010 19:13

the thing is mel, they didnt really show your sons, just your DDs. I have to say, kelise wasnt half as bad as the others but i did question why biscuits were in bottom cupboard tbh.

I think it was clear from the fil you were/are trying and im sure channel4 have done some clever editing too.

notnowbernard · 12/01/2010 21:02

Agree with what's been said about the editing etc

But will still stand by my earlier (very simple) point:

If you don't want you or your kids to be tempted by highly calorific, fattening and teeth-rotting foodstuffs then DON'T BUY IT IN THE FIRST PLACE

Pop to the corner shop on a Friday after school for a weekly sweetie treat or something

Don't fill the trolley with them

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2010 20:10

this was sad

watched the older children one last week

the portion of that shepherds pie and then with cheese sauce and slices of cheese on it

what the hell are the gps/auntys/people on street doing by feeding those boys

agree,if not in the cupboard then cant eat it

yes def some editing, just like supernanny/wife swap but the food has to be in there for the child to eat/pick off sugar etc in the first place

smileytrace · 22/01/2010 13:45

Its taken me 2 weeks to get my head around the fact that the programme creators havent at all showed the "real image" of these children.
I am the mother of a child from the programme and would like to ask lewisfan, herbietea & knicknack why an earth they are so damn quick to judge and critise when they know NOTHING about own personal lives.
I would also like to add that my child is now doing amazingly am i am very proud of her big or small, she is more active that she was, she eats more than she did then and is generally a lot more healthy. She is now a keen swimmer and enjoys many other activities that she wouldnt try when she was younger.
The programme was filmed 2 years ago and i notice that channel 4 failed to mention how well all of the children are now doing 2 years later!!!
I will be suprised if any of the mums that took part in the documentry will continue with the follow up due to the lack of factual information that was given on all of the kids.
Wouldnt it be a sad world if everyone was "body perfect"!!
Maybe you guys should have all waited until the end of the programme before your harsh and upsetting words on here! Like i said on the programme "people are far to quick to judge!!"

compo · 22/01/2010 13:48

Honestly what do you expect from these reality shows?
Did you get paid for it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/01/2010 16:39

smileyface - were you not shown the end programme before it was shown on tv/public?

yes tv does really bad editing BUT they are showing what they see, so if the child (not necessary yours) is eating crappy/fatty foods/biscuits etc then they will show it

im glad to hear that your dd is doing well 2 years on
