It is really rubbish the triffids are like the spooky trees from snow white! And how handy that the two people who could see were from the oil company who caused it and a radio presenter who could broadcast to everyone!

I have just been rereading John wyndham and only read the Day of the Triffids a couple of months ago, so was really looking forward to it, but to be honest lost interest about a quarter the way through.
The book raises so much food for thought and this seems to have completely missed it. I think they have tried to condense it too much. They have missed out all the illness and the food rotting etc and the fact everything took place over months.

DS 147 was enjoying it, I have been trying to get him to read The Chrysalids for ages, hopefully this will inspire him.

bruffin · 29/12/2009 16:02

DS is not a 147 he is 14 (sounds like a character from Trouble with Lichen )

My favorite website is IMDB saves a lot of bother wondering who played who when!

Georgimama · 29/12/2009 16:18

I love the Chrysalids, one of my favourite books at about 12/13.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 29/12/2009 20:57

OK, so help me God I am watching it again tonight. It's like not only do I need to fill my body with rubbish food at this time of year I also need to fill my head with crap too!

DarrellRivers · 29/12/2009 20:57

I'm here as well [excited]

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 29/12/2009 21:03

ooh they're like a great big aloe vera plant. I shall be extra nice to any cacti I come across from now on!

DoesntTheTurkeyDragOn · 29/12/2009 21:04

Damn. I was hoping it would be good and was planning on watching it on iPlayer. I will not waste my time.

MumOfAPickle · 29/12/2009 21:14

Yes, watched last night and again tonight. Mildly entertaining diversion. Thought Joely Richardson was crap though. Liked Izzard and can't believe I didn't twig that General Coker was Brandon - Loved 90210

I did wonder why everyone was out - why didn't they just stay in and live on rice pudding or something?

HellBent · 29/12/2009 21:29

I'm watching again!

Actually once you get past the shit plants its getting quite good, that nun is a bit messed up telling the blind folk they can go out and start new communities!

Best comedy I've watched in ages

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 29/12/2009 22:23

It is awful isn't it. It's like a car crash- I don't want to look but I can't stop watching!

SleighGirl · 29/12/2009 22:28

PMSL it just gets stupider

Boco · 29/12/2009 22:32

Mycat you're right about the aloe vera. Dp just came at me with our potted aloe vera plant while making strange clicking noises and made me scream. Cross between that and those plants they always have at pizza express.

Thingiebob · 29/12/2009 22:38

It's an appalling adaptation. The script is bollocks and most of the acting is so wooden. There are so many loopholes as well. There would be LOADS of sighted people who weren't watching the light show. What about those on the other side of the world who were asleep? Or am I missing something?
Also, I don't get how one minute it's snowing and the next it's spring.

Really disappointed.

Georgimama · 29/12/2009 22:39

DH leapt about a foot in the air while the mummy triffid was eating Bill's dad and then he realised what he could see was the legs of the table the Christmas tree is standing on .

HellBent · 29/12/2009 22:40

I'd like to revise my last post-

Actually once you get past the shit plants its getting quite good still shit

That's 3 hours I won't get back!

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 29/12/2009 22:51

It dragged on for sooooooo long!

sphil · 30/12/2009 00:02

Second part very disappointing - all that wandering through the countryside...
Thought the 'chemistry' between Jo and Bill was completely unbelievable. But then I switched over to Allan Carr and my evening was brightened

WingedVictory · 30/12/2009 01:13

I liked it, and thought the Mother Superior and Torrance characters were good additions. I would have liked to have seen Mother Superior facing the triffids, though; I did need closure on that. Torrance was great - fantastic that there was a transition from one sort of villain to another. I seem to remember from the book that Coker carried on to the end, humourless, trying to set things up in a way which was clearly a dig at the post-war Soviet Bloc. The evolution to Torrance's villainy triumphant (rampant) was a lovely nuance.

WingedVictory · 30/12/2009 01:17

nuance of modernity, I ought to have said.

DollyPS · 30/12/2009 04:06

I have to say I watched both episodes and found it okish but for some reason the Triffids looked like a giant Thistle to me or was that the fact that Bill and his Dad where Scottish. Havent read the book though now I just might as I find them a lot better as they do miss out a lot of things dont they.

ProfYaffle · 30/12/2009 08:26

We said the same re aloe vera! The ending was pants, I thought they were going to solve the communication thing and use tell them all to bog off or something. And what was with the mask/eye thing? Why didn't they explain why it worked??

Georgimama · 30/12/2009 09:23

It was some sort of serum from the triffid used to provide immunity, it was the reason Bill didn't die when he was stung at the very beginning before everyone went blind. There were quite a few things not really tied up (how his mother died, I was thinking throughout the first episode that his father either killed her or left her to die but that wasn't resolved either way, what happened to the people in the gherkin, how major coker had got to the Isle of Wight, the mad nun etc). Can only think it was originally going to be a 3 episode thing and heavily cut to make it fit.

ProfYaffle · 30/12/2009 09:39

We got the innoculation type thing but what role did the mask play? Was it unique? Would any old mask do? Why didn't they share this knowledge with others? At first I thought it was going to help them understand the triffid talk and they'd negotiate a truce.

I don't know why I even care about this stuff tbh, the ending was rubbish no matter how you look at it.
