It is really rubbish the triffids are like the spooky trees from snow white! And how handy that the two people who could see were from the oil company who caused it and a radio presenter who could broadcast to everyone!

i wondered why i never liked purple sprouting brocolli.

yes, i though they could use the sound recording to get them all to go mental and attack each other.

jason priestley? i thought he looked familiar.

i definitely preferred the salt water ending myself.

Maybe the mask helped regulate the dose cos the eye holes were little?

EdgarAleNPie · 30/12/2009 09:59

although i'd like to say how very very pleased i am that the Beeb threw money at re-making a sci-fi classic, and hope they do it more often.

Tripods anyone?

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 30/12/2009 10:00

Chockie would be good!

DarrellRivers · 30/12/2009 10:01

oh yes the tripods
Great books, my introduction to sci-fi

OrmIrian · 30/12/2009 11:00

Well I enjoyed it.

And they didn't look like purple sprouting they looked like a cross between agave and pitcher plants.

But how are they going to get across to the Isle of Wight - assuming that Red Funnel isn't running? Lots of little boats waiting for them like Dunkirk? Or will they swim?

OrmIrian · 30/12/2009 11:01

And more importantly is anyone going to be watching the Turn of the Screw tonight? From scg-fi to supernatural. Good stuff!

In the book they got to the Isle of Wight by helicopter - and actually there's no reason the Red Funnel shouldn't be running if there happened to be someone reasonably competent with engines among the sighted survivors and they had access to fuel stores. I've only seen about 2/3 of the first episode, so I don't know how many people were found to have survived in the TV version, but in the book there were quite a large number - it just took a while for them to find each other & establish a community - the book actually covers several years and Bill and Jo have a family by the time they go to the Isle of Wight.

I think I'll definately have to read the book- there were too many gaps left in the story that I need filled.

The plants reminded me of the thistle from Bill and Ben.

I shall be watching the Turn of the Screw Orm. Haven't read that one either!

bruffin · 30/12/2009 13:51

There is supposed to a film of the tripods being made but, I think its on hold.
We have the videos of the old BBC Tripods and the DCs love it, it's such a shame they never finished it.
I still have all my old Johh Christopher but dcs not interested

Georgimama · 30/12/2009 15:18

I would watch the Turn of the Screw but as it is the scariest book I have ever read and the trailer was enough to give me nightmares - vital ingredients for terror: malevolent servants who may or may not be ghosts, creepy children, antique nursery furniture rocking by itself, lullabys sung in creepy voice - I think I will pass.

DarrellRivers · 30/12/2009 18:16

In two minds about Turn of the Screw
It's disturbing

Georgimama · 30/12/2009 20:17

You watch it for me and then come and tell me I was right how it was.

DarrellRivers · 30/12/2009 22:14

Couldn't watch it
Too scary
I'm watching some ham film about Jack the Ripper instead
