Desperate Romantics - SO excited

littlepollyflinders · 11/07/2009 11:23

Can hardly contain my excitement...!!
Aidan Turner (the gorgeous vampire from Being Human - sorry language failure there - 'gorgeous' doesn't begin to cover it ) in series about the Pre-Raphaelites.
All long coats and brooding artiness.
Can hardly breathe - must take deep breath.

It definitely has a touch of the Carry On films about it - I think it could be described as a 'romp'. Still rather enjoying it though.

Chevre · 29/07/2009 12:17

definitely a romp, with all the comedy punching and music.

dh last night said 'so were they into red heads then?' i had to dig out my gombrich for him

JackieNo · 29/07/2009 12:20

I remember having a bit of a lightbulb moment when I realised years ago that the reason the women all looked similar in the pictures was because they were all the same woman/few women! I think I just assumed it was 'their style' until then .

PuppyMonkey · 29/07/2009 14:22

Glad I saw this thread, as I was going to start one.

This prog is the shittiest pile of old shit since Shit the Shitty Shitter went for a shit on Planet Shithead and got covered in more shit being thrown from the Shitty Shitter's ShitHitting Shack.

Honestly, it is unwatchable and actually made me quite angry.

Thank you.

JackieNo · 29/07/2009 15:09

Don't hold back, PuppyMonkey - tell us what you really think . So you're not keen, eh?

southeastastra · 29/07/2009 15:20

i was expecting better too

PuppyMonkey · 29/07/2009 15:26

I feel a lot better now Jackie. Gets it out of your system...

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 29/07/2009 16:48

I've completely turned off my brain because my lust-function was threatening to be overwhelmed by the crapness of it.

But Aidan Turner.

Damn. I just can't take my eyes off him. And when he takes his shirt off it's even worse.

So yes, not intellectually stimulated. But pah to intellect, it gets plenty of exercise elsewhere.

JackieNo · 29/07/2009 17:28

I know Kay - the shirt-taking-off was very exciting, wasn't it. Hope there's more of that.

Glad you're feeling better now PuppyMonkey .

Chevre · 29/07/2009 18:01

i love the way ruskin looks at millais.

TigersChick · 29/07/2009 21:17

I agree that it is total bollocks ... rather compulsive tho

glasjam · 29/07/2009 21:50

PuppyMonkey - glad that it wasn't just me that was literally embarassed by how baaaad this is

wigglybeezer · 29/07/2009 21:58

Yes, its bad but in quite a good way, at least I found it quite entertaining (but probably would have been appalled when I was a very serious, pre-raphelite worshipping teenager). seem to remember that Rosetti was a bit short in RL, can't quite remember.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 30/07/2009 08:32

Watched it again, for research purposes, and I am content that the disclaimer at the start of the series which admitted 'creative license was taken' is really saying 'We made up loads of old crap so you could see Aidan Turner with his top off'.

I for one, commend them! ;)

PuppyMonkey · 30/07/2009 08:35

You're all mad, the blokes aren't even dishy imho. That's one of the things that pisses me off about it.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 30/07/2009 08:47

B-b-but it's Aidan Turner. Don't think much of the others, 'tis true. But Turner was made to do intense bohemian. Did you know he can also tango really well. I'd love to see that...

Chevre · 30/07/2009 08:50

having spent many a hour in tutorials discussing ruskin's theories etc i find it a fantastic release seeing him portrayed as a sedated john inman.

PuppyMonkey · 30/07/2009 08:56

Does nothing for me Kay, tbh. And I usually go for that type too. he's just not up to scratch!!

glasjam · 31/07/2009 16:10

PuppyMonkey, I am sharing your view of the male actors in this drama. It's got me thinking whether they could have redeemed this series if there had had less irritating leads. I have been trying to think about who could have delivered the lines with a bit more wit and irony (and with a bit more of a phwhoar factor!)

I'm terrible with names but I think someone of the ilk of Rufus Sewell could have done a better Rossetti, and that Irish one from the Tudors could have delivered the lines in a "camp" fashion. I would like to shoehorn Dominic West into the equation but he might be too butch for it. I'm sure the budget couldn't have stretched to any of these but it's fun none the less to ponder on a rainy afternoon

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 01/08/2009 19:34

strops

I still think Aidan Turner is the best thing in it. And since sliced bread. So there.

littlepollyflinders · 01/08/2009 23:15

Just got back from hols and caught up with both episodes as couldn't wait a moment longer...

What a larf!!

Highly enjoyable nonsense. Lucky I already know all I needed to about the Pre-Rafs.

And that Aiden Turner COR - what a beauty! Totally agree he is made for the part.

Tango, you say? - yes would LOVE to see that.

Strictly Come Dancing are you Listening???

JackieNo · 04/08/2009 10:14

Oooh yes - that's a thought - AT on Strictly.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 04/08/2009 14:44

That would be cheating, though, he used to be a professional dancer. Not that I'd have a problem with it, but if he does it in a drama he might take his shirt off in the next scene...

RubyBlueberry · 04/08/2009 16:44

oh yes please
