yippee!! on now.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 10/07/2009 09:12

lolol at houseman's 'the new doctor will be pointing up at the sky and chanting like all the other kiddies'.

TheOddOne · 10/07/2009 09:30

Did anyone else read between the lines of why they didn't want Clem as he'd been abused in care and therefore wasn't the virgin sacrifice mentioned earlier? Or am i overthinking now??

Interesting the dilemma between loss of the human race and loss of humanity itself - which is what happened round the table.

RustyBear · 10/07/2009 09:32

Don't think Jack turns into Boe just yet - he looks normal here, filming for the last Doctor who Special.

Unless of course, that was a ruse & it's actually DT filming secretly for Torchwood....

I do think it's possible this was meant to be the end of Torchwood - there are indications in Russell's book A writer's tale that he was finding it increasingly difficult to write for. But if the ratings are good all the way through, they might think again.

I'm wondering what happened to the anti-virus the 456 gave them last time? - is this a different virus?

hockeypuck · 10/07/2009 09:41

How on earth did Lois get into the cabinet meeting unquestioned?

Why didn't Ianto and Jack open the door?

Why do they think parents from failing schools will automatically put their kids on army vehicles to be vaccinated without them?

Why oh why oh why did Ianto have to die?

Why waste all the time on the subplot that they have enough recorded into from the cabinet to create a political crisis (Mr Gwen running off with the laptop) but then that to be worthless??

Why did Jack pretend to die with the gas? or dos he die but then come back to life and actually was affected by the gas?

Eagerly awaiting 9pm tonight!!

Oh and some more Cardiff facts for you all...

  1. Although the aerial shots of Thames House were indeed Thames House. From what I could tell the exterior ground shots were Cardiff City Hall, Cardiff Hayes, and National Museum of Wales (the only buildings in the area that look Londony - made of stone not brick).
  1. The interior shots of Thames House were Cardiff University, National Museum of Wales and Cardiff Crown Court. Probably more than that, but those are the buildings that I recognised that I've been in. I think that one of our smaller lecture rooms was used as the cabinet office. The funny thing is that Jack would be running around one building, turn a corner and emerge in an entirely different building.
  1. Londers will probably scoff at me for all this, but Cardiffians are truly excited - it's not often we get our familiar places on the telly
hockeypuck · 10/07/2009 09:41

That 3. was meant to read Londoners (silly me)

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 10/07/2009 09:42

Riven don't if you've been a bit low lately and I know I have too, Dh adored it and I can see itas good telly but I wish I had walked away when I saw it bloody obviously coming!

Would rather see humanity die out for a better cause than hand over the kids but wouldn't happen in RL. In RL either the UK / Amewrica would hand wads of cash to curruopt countries in the manner of carbon trading to buy our kids off, or the 90+% given that many of us have several bottomers) whose kids were Ok would be shoving ours on the bus just glad that they'd asved their own.

The worst bit IMowas when that chap mooted the idea of population expansion trade off- someone has to have though of it for it to be written in!

Also remmended me of the care home where the owners left the residents ion the US when the levy burst; assuming the climate changes as suspected ds3 will be in a care facillity in a vulnerable age.

But its good TV yes, face of Bo idea is a good one, hoping for the Sr as they started to release details of the next special this week also- and I suppose if ten per cent of us are upset tjhen 90% are sat glued.

Not sure if I waill watch tonight or not.

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 10/07/2009 09:43

Oh yeah and the saving grace that amde me PMSL-

I will ahve fun throwing this up on that anti vaccination threads now just to piss people off

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 10/07/2009 09:44

HP- LOL, not only did we get cardiff (hec caerleon is close enough ) I used to work next door to the MI5 building- double whammy!

Housemum · 10/07/2009 09:45

1965 was for a flu epidemic - it was their offer to Earth to avoid the mass deaths from a virus we already had

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 10/07/2009 09:46

(feeling a bit that I taught ,my ten percenter the day before yesterday to stand in the playground pointing at the sky mochanting theya re coming- says something entirely different now!!!!!!)

Bah!

Well I agree with lots of comments made here -
I thought it was all excellent - big improvement in writing I felt - until they cleverly managed to overcome the humans to gain access (big dramatic deal made of this bit of the plot) then completely fudged the confrontation with the aliens! Is it just me, or does that kind of thing happen a lot during Torchwood plots?
Was it supposed to be a satirical dig at the Iraq war ?!

Also agree it's silly to write a story like this which ignores previous developments, like
a) no mention of Martha and her mobile access to the Dr (did they say she was on honeymoon? I'm sure she wouldn't mind being interrupted! It's kind of important...)
b) no mention of Mickey

Ianto!! You can't just kill off all the major characters!!

hockeypuck · 10/07/2009 09:49

Peachy and Riven, I completely understand your distress.

FWIW in the story they were thinking about failing regular schools, not the 10% lowest acchievers in regular schools. That makes no excuses, I can't imagine deciding on that basis, or on any other basis which 10%. I truly hope that you are underestimating the oter parents at your DS's school, or it is a very sad state of affairs.

My DD goes to a school with a big SEN unit and I would never dream of considering that to be a deciding point on 10% of pupils, despite DD not being in that unit.

I think everyone will watch TW and think how something like the 10% would affect them personally, not just those parents with kids with additional needs and not just parents with kids in failing schools, all parents.

I hope, because it is difficult viewing, that there is some resolution to it tomorrow.

P.S. Can someone explain the face of Bo thing to me - I watch TW but not DW.

Housemum · 10/07/2009 09:52

Loved the politicians' idea of a random selection, "excluding our kids of course". Then the quick switch to getting rid of the "non-contributors".

Can't beat a bit of eugenics for family entertainment...

TheOddOne · 10/07/2009 09:53

Face of Boe

A very very ancient character in a few of the Dr Who episodes. He claimed to know the Dr of old. He actually dies in one of them and it's very sad. Then we get a hint that Cpt J might eventually become him.

sockmonkey · 10/07/2009 09:58

I was saying to DH last night that they need the Doctor coming in, and spouting off about the Shadow Proclaimation and zapping them with his sonic screwdriver.
I had real trouble sleeping last night and I think part of the problem was this episode going through my mind. (the other part being DS2 crying and wanting me to sleep in his bed with him).

HP The school ds3 goes to with the SNU is lovely, the parents there are totally accepting- its the more selective school that I'd be scared of.

Also- you know- if the only way you oculd save your child was to watch another one go off, would we?? I like to think no, that i'd be there saying take us all on you bastards, but if the aliens were actually there-?

Mind, i;d like the government to actually seek evidence there was more than one alien in a tank in London in existence and that they ahd some place beyind the buildingt ehy're in . If the aliens are all dyings omewhre becuase their battery packs / children are too old now then wuldn't you want to know if there was a real threat? Esp. when getting rid of the one pesky bug seems to involve someone in a breathing suit opening an air vent?

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 10:01

Russell T has obviously been listening to the dinner-party chat of his breeder friends.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/07/2009 10:05

It was really hard going, made for extremely uncomfortable watching.

It's turning into a George R.R Martin novel though with all the lead characters dying.

I will be watching avidly tonight, but I can't help feeling that there is going to be some glib plot-device suddenly in order to wrap it up in just one more episode - there are too many unanswered questions.

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 10/07/2009 10:05

maybe that what worries my UQD living so close to Cardiff and all...

Sugarmagnolia · 10/07/2009 10:11

hockeypuck - jack didn't pretend to die - he does actually die when poisoned/shot/encased in concret - then comes back to life.

Katisha · 10/07/2009 10:12

Well I thought RTD was making, rather unsubtley, the point that the world doesn't appear too bothered about the third world children that routinely die of disease and famine, as pointed out by the squirty alien, so why are we now so concerned about our own children.

But as I say I found it heavy handed. It's all heavy handed and for that reason I find it difficult to take as great insight into the human condition.

Still there it will be something to do with what the children are actually for... and there will be something to do with the technician guy who got himself into the chemical suit last night... he's got a role to play in how it all works out...IMHO...
