I am seriously considering writing to ofcom or whoever it is to complain about the blatent constant references to Susan boyle which will almost certainly mean she will win. It's like something out of Derren Brown, where he makes references to something he wants people to do, iyswim.

Obviously these shows are fixed - I have absolutely no doubt of that. But to blatently plug and plug and plug one act above all the others constantly is just wrong. Why bother having a contest in the first place if the end result has already been decided.

violethill · 26/05/2009 09:40

I agree wannaBe - and if the breakdown of voting which someone posted is accurate and not just invented by some mad MNer, then what the hell is that information in the public domain for?

Knowing that Susan Boyle got over 70% of the vote is bound to influence the way people vote now isn't it?!!!

I also agree with lockets - it takes a lot of commitment as well as talent to do what flawless and diversity did, and that's going to be a key factor in deciding who wins. The judges what a winner who they can work with, do a lot with, and make a lot of money out of!

Disagree with those who say Shaun Smith can't sing. OK, his voice needs working on, but he's only 17 FGS and doesn't appear to have had any serious training. I'd sooner listen to him than plenty of other people who think they can sing!!

Whoops!

Nancy66 · 26/05/2009 09:42

It's manipulated rather than 'fixed' - there's no way they rig the phone votes they wouldn't dare after all the scandals of recent years.

But the judges final vote sorts things so that they can ensure they get a good variety in the final and not just eight singers.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 26/05/2009 09:46

Not sure it's fixed, but they don't announce the semi finalists until several months after the initial auditions, by which point they've all been rehearsed. There are also a few on stand by in case there are problems.

Beetroot · 26/05/2009 10:05

yes agree manipulatged is the word I was searching for.
Have you read ben Eltons book onit. It boring after the first few chapters but a fabulous insight!

ellingwoman · 26/05/2009 10:47

You see I look on Susan Boyle's hype as doing her no favours. I think that there will be a backlash and she won't win. And it won't be her fault, poor woman - it's the media etc.

violethill · 26/05/2009 10:59

I agree. I think the fact that the public now know that she got 77% of the vote will work against her. That was such a HUGE majority that it's bound to inluence people in their voting now.

I actually don't think she ought to win anyway. She's so clearly got learning difficulties and/or mental health issues that she's seriously vulnerable to exploitation, and I don't think the BGT producers will want to risk that tbh.

Nancy66 · 26/05/2009 11:42

would they want to risk her meeting the Queen? She might do her famous shimmy and hip thrust!

violethill · 26/05/2009 11:50

Exactly!! She's way too unpredictable. But more seriously, it could all go tits up for her as she's so clearly not quite the full ticket. And I think that's a risk no one will want to take.... exploitation of someone with mental illness and learning difficulties wouldn't go down well.

No, I think she's served her purpose. The media exposure made us all feel a bit of a glow in the middle of global recession - we could all empathise with the underdog who's been laughed at all her life and has now had her moment. She's got through to the final, but will now make way for some real talent, ie either Flawless or Diversity. I think there will be a lot of pressure for Diversity to win, because of the age mix - I think it will be seen as very positive role modelling, sending out the right message to the nation etc - but actually I hope Flawless win because they just have the edge.

wannaBe · 26/05/2009 13:02

I like Sean smith because he's so level-headed. There are so many 17 year olds who go on these types of shows who go on about it all being about the dream, that it's all they've ever wanted, that their lives will be destroyed if they don't win... but throughout he's been constant about needing to keep his feet on the ground, about wanting to go into the RAF because he is living in the real world where he'll have to do a real job, but that he's just chasing the dream in the meantime, iyswim.

Attitudes like that are admirable IMO - especially when so young.

If Susan Boyle wins (and I believe she will win), she will not have a long-term career out of it. Because while she currently has the support, and the hype still surrounds her, she can do her thing. But the hype won't last, and once the support is taken away, she will crumble like a house of cards IMO. Not to mention the fact she is unlikely to be able to deal with criticism in the media, and that is bound to happen, as people aren't going to find her querky personality endearing for ever.

stressed2007 · 26/05/2009 13:16

I do agree with the repeated comments about Susan Boyle - it is giving her far greater publicity during the show then the other contestants

lottiejenkins · 26/05/2009 15:12

Here we go again "not the full ticket" maybe not as offence as the "r" word but still not very kind! The correct term is that she has learning difficulties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My son has learning difficulties among other things and if anyone told me he wasnt the "full ticket" or the "r" word then god help them!!!

lottiejenkins · 26/05/2009 15:15

I have just seen that you have used ld's in your post as well. Still not kind to say the other phrase though!!!

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 26/05/2009 15:22

Feel conflicted about Susan Boyle. Don't watch the programme so haven't seen the first time she sang but my mum is a fan so watched it with her on Sunday. Wanted her to do well because there have surely been enough good-looking, useless singers who have done well (Lily Allen springs to mind) so why not even things up? She definitely had a shaky start but did improve as the song went on. Not much interpretation in the way she sang the song - she raced through it but then she was obviously nervous and has never had any training. I'm sure this must have happened to other singers on reality competitions. Sadly she does have learning difficulties - she was starved of oxygen at birth and is called Simple Susie by kids in her area. This made me feel quite uncomfortable watching her joke sexy antics at the end. It felt that Ant and Dec were worried about what she might do and were eager to get her offstage. I was glad she got through as it seemed to make her happy but I do worry about the effect of the media's attacks on her and her ability to cope - but then again, I guess she's been coping with similar attacks all her life, maybe now she's at least getting something positive as well. It did feel like her response to Simon's apology "I know nothing" was scripted for her.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/05/2009 18:07

it annoys me that singers get through

the show is called britains got talent

not bratains got singers

there is x factor and pop idol for them

wannaBe · 26/05/2009 18:12

hmmm. for the younger singers/bands there is x factor. But even though there is a category for older contestants on xfactor, the reality is that older singers is not really what they are looking for. Because older singers don't sell records, don't have the sex appeal that younger ones do.

I agree that there should be more scope for dancers/other musicians/alternative acts though, but singing does pass as a talent also.

But I like to see the dancers etc win over the singers..

wannaBe · 26/05/2009 18:15

oh and the age limit should be sixteen IMO. Allowing young children to be rejected live on national television makes for very uncomfortable viewing.

Also, even if young children don't get rejected and were to make it all the way, children that young just aren't equipped to deal with everything that goes with being famous IMO. Hell it' hard enough for adults to live a famous lifestyle, children should be spared that.

wannabe, myself and my 11 yr ds were talking about this very thing today.

We think, if you are lucky enough to be born with a potential for loively singing voice, then brilliant, and of course I can appreciate a great singer as much as the next person,

but, the dedication, motivation, imagination, of the young people behind the (mostly young men this year has to ba said) dance troupes, now that's talent imo. They have to think up a routine, introduce every member of the troupe to it, make sure all are step accurate, put it to music, turn up for rehearsals, etc etc, I could go on. I think they are a true inspiration for the youth of today.

Diversity to win in our house.

Ds's dance teacher and dd's dance teacher were in Hot Honeyz, and I have to say, I though their performance last night ws lukewarm at best. Shame, they do some fab routines with chairs and such like in our local theatres.

So who's on tonight then?

Nancy66 · 26/05/2009 19:37

I'm not sure of of the line up tonight - hope it's better than last night though. I assume there's no show tomorrow because of the footie
