I am off to get my laptop so I can chat and watch.

Only the 2nd episode tonight? Thought it had been on all week!

Is it just on a Saturday night then?

Claire2009 · 18/04/2009 21:31

Yep, every Sat night.

inscotland · 19/04/2009 08:51

I was quite disappointed in last night's show. Thought it was pretty poor and not a patch on the week before.

wintera · 19/04/2009 09:08

To be honest, I have lost all faith in the show as last night's was blatantly set up and staged. I recognised the young lad Shaheen from Cbeebies Grandpa in my pocket. But apparently he has been in a few other things like Torchwood, and was in the stage version of Thriller Live where he played a young Michael Jackson. I got suspicious when Simon stopped him singing Valerie and asked him to sing something else. Simon and the people behind the show must have known he had played Michael Jackson. It was just all too fake!!

I don't really understand why he went on the show as he already has a promising career ahead of him on his own merit. He doesn't really need BGT.

Juxal · 19/04/2009 12:42

that's cheating isn't it?

SlightlyMadStirrup · 19/04/2009 13:02

I don't think it is cheating. What's the difference between him and the belly dancer guy that does it for a living? The onlly difference is that the belly dancer is perhaps doing it on a slightly lower scale..but then how do you delineate between those which are doing essentially the same thing - but on a different scale?

The string quartet lsat year had similar comments made - they already had a contract of some sort I think -had they done an advert or something? Or a sports event opening ceremony - I can't remember the details.

At the end of the day - based on the rules available on ITV website there is nothing to preclude Michael Jackson himself from applying.

wintera · 19/04/2009 13:50

I haven't really got a problem with the fact he has done other stuff to be honest. I only tuned in cos I recognised him from Grandpa in my pocket, so I knew he had done other tv work. My daughter spotted him in the credits last week and shouted "Its Troy!!!!!"

My main problem was that I just didn't buy all that "Lets try another song" business. It just didn't ring true to me anyway. The young lad himself is fantastically talented. Won't argue with that. He is great and is wonderful in Grandpa . . but it just looked like it was a set-up. I notice that other posters from last night thought the same thing so I'm not the only one who thought it was a bit iffy!

Juxal · 19/04/2009 18:32

Oh OK, but if he's so great why couldn't he sing Valerie?

SlightlyMadStirrup · 19/04/2009 18:55

For the same reason that you wouldn't expect Paul Potts to sing Valerie....different songs need different voices (in a technical sense - soprano and alto and that stuff which I don't understand).

anniebear · 19/04/2009 19:46

I am so glad others have thought it was a bit suspicious!

I thought so too. All seemed a bit strange

brilliant voice though

anniebear · 19/04/2009 19:48

just read this on that link

I went to an BGT audition with a friend of mine who is a singer and they ask you to take more than one sound track with you, from what I can gather from going to a few auditions for various things with my friend this is standard practice so I don't believe this to be a setup. You have also got to remember that the show would have been edited to make it look more dramatic.

so that may explain the other song being so available?

wintera · 19/04/2009 20:03

Again the fact that he had another song wasn't why I was suspicious. I would expect people going to an audition to have more than one song to be honest. It would be basic common sense to take more than one.

I was suspicious because the whole affair just didn't sit well with me while I was watching it. I just thought "This is being staged" as soon as it started. It all felt like a performance.

myredcardigan · 19/04/2009 20:08

Anniebear, I started a thread in SN yesterday to tell you and Lottie that you were right about the learning difficulty thing after reading that Susan Boyle has LDs. ITV have said they had no idea!

wannaBe · 19/04/2009 20:24

I can't believe that people are still surprised over the level at which these shows are fixed.

Escala (string quartette from last year) had been invited to audition by Simon cowell after they performed at the xfactor after party the year before, so he knew them and knew who they were, his surprise at how good they were was not genuine..

And George what's his name who won last year didn't get through the year before and oh such a big deal was made of that and .. oh look, he won. coincidence? me thinks not.

And if you look at the finalists in last year's xfactor almost all of them had a famous connection. Member of one girl band is in a relationship with Simon web of Blu, member of jls was on children's television, Alexandra who won had a famous mother... etc etc.

I would actually be surprised if any of the finalists go through the whole audition process at all and would put money on them having been invited to just do the final "audition" in front of the judges just for television purposes.

braveandcrazy · 19/04/2009 20:37

I've been waiting to come on here since last night as I knew I'd seen that lad somewhere before (Grandpa in my Pocket) but just couldn't place him. So where do I come for an answer? MN of course! Thanks for putting me out of my misery.

SamJamsmum · 22/04/2009 15:03

The Shaheen thing was very odd. I just watched a clip on the BBC website about him going 'back to school' (a bit sad I know) and his mates were 'err..I didn't know he could sing'. Yeah right.
I think the grandpa in pocket thing is quite funny though as the producers are smugly thinking they've pulled a fast one and a big section of viewers with young children (who are likely to be watching TV on a Saturday night) are thinking, 'ooh look! It's Troy from Grandpa in my Pocket. He did have a nice voice at Miss Smiley's Summer show.'

Who is X factor Alexandra's mother?

lottiejenkins · 24/04/2009 20:27

Alexandras Mum was in Soul2Soul

TippytheTipsyTurkeychick · 25/04/2009 11:18

I can't believe I am looking forward to this tonight. My hidden love of trashy telly is taking over, who would get excited about a Saturday night in watching BGT?
I am tragic.

lunamoon2 · 25/04/2009 19:38

My daughter went for an audition but didn't get through.
They kept asking her if she had a "story" and she kept saying no!
I don't think she was "exciting" enough iyswim

SlightlyMadStirrup · 25/04/2009 20:07

Where are you.....you just missed a bit of a classic

ellingwoman · 25/04/2009 20:08

I'm cringing already...

SlightlyMadStirrup · 25/04/2009 20:09

Can't see why Piers buzzed that is what the RV is about.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 25/04/2009 20:18

Dancing was milkdly ropey...voice less so!

expatinscotland · 25/04/2009 20:19

OMG, her little voice is brilliant!

MuffinBaker · 25/04/2009 20:19

Simon was going to buzz until she started to sing.
