Hope you're feeling a bit brighter this morning, Meri.
SoH - LJ Cut just hides epic amounts of text, so you wouldn't need one on the comm post, but it's Polite and The Done Thing to do it on your LJ still so that people who have you on their flist don't get overwhelmed with text when you post something.
Navigating LJ - the Flist. It's wonderful when you get the hang of it. Friend everyone and every comm you have an interest in, then when you click on Friends List at the top of the page, it works a bit like Active Conversations here.
By Homepage do you mean the User Profile? Click on your name or where it says journal entries and it will take you there (and User Info to do the opposite)
The really snazzy journals are paid accounts - they're more flexible, and people post icons and headers and all that for people to use (as long as they're credited)
To add a friend... When you're in someone's LJ (reading fic or whatever) go to the very top of the page and it'll say whether you're a friend, mutual friend, or give you the option to friend them. Works the same way in the comms (but you must have done that to post the fic)
If you go into their User Profile, it gives you the same options on the right hand side, next to their details.
Why don't you look at my list of comms on my User Profile? Have a look at a few, see which ones appeal? Mishaland is weird and freaky but worth joining. SPNNewsletter is a must - lists the new fic (both of yours were on there) It might be a good starting point.
