Velcrobot - bread not mice

WideWebWitch · 03/03/2005 12:10

Sorry, I meant bread velcrobott. MiLondon, ah, so that'll be no good to you, sorry!

velcrobott · 03/03/2005 12:11

70% chocolate isn't too unhealthy compared to milk chocolate

bundle · 03/03/2005 12:12

velcrobot, plenty, if you don't happen to have fresh cod in the fridge.

muminlondon · 03/03/2005 12:12

must admit, I draw the line at mice

velcrobott · 03/03/2005 12:20

DH just made 2 breads without a bread maker I hasten to add.... we useShipton Mill organic flours - FABULOUS... and he makes 2 breads at a time... costs about 70p for both breads (excluding electricy for oven).... we are 4 in the house and the 2 breads are eaten in 3 days....
Only ingredients : shipton mill flour THREE MALTS AND SUNFLOWER (500G) + 200g organic (Dove Farm) wholemeal flour +100g (Dove Farm) white flour + 30g fresh yeast (8p) and 1 spoon of organic sunflower oil + luke warm filtered water.
It takes 10 mins MAX to do, 30 misn to cook (it must rest for 45 mins before going into oven)

velcrobott · 03/03/2005 12:21

Bundle have cod in the freezer then ! It defrosts quickly!

muminlondon · 03/03/2005 12:27

your bread sounds lovely... I'm sure I read that hydrogenated fat in bread requires more yeast as well as various additives - surely that's why people complain about getting bloated after eating too much bread, not because they have a wheat intolerance?

have enjoyed this, must dash now

velcrobott · 03/03/2005 12:29

Bundle - I have to say that I disagree with your comment about Jools telling her hubby to stop faffing.... I cook EVERY day for my kids, if you think using fish fingers is convenient - good for you but I CHOOSE (because I enjoy it and I value it) to cook for my kids, I am making pizza from scratch tonight, the kids I know will help... it's just the way we are and I have friends who make comments like yours to me and I feel like saying (but I don't as I really hate upsetting people) but FFS if you don't give a toss I do! so don't tell me to simplify my life if I don't think it is complicated, I enjoy cooking and it matters a great deal to me what goes in their body !
My kids have never had at home (I presume they have at school!) fish fingers, nuggets ... the only convenience food I buy occasionally buy is pizza though I much prefer to make it....

Beatie · 03/03/2005 12:36

I think it may just be a joke aimed at JO because you cannot imagine him taking less than an hour to put together a meal.

soapbox · 03/03/2005 12:37

Velcrobott - Bundle was just making a joke!

I don't think in anyway she was commenting on whether you should or you don't cook every day. Rather that restaurant quality meals, with all the faffing that entails perhaps could get wearing. I don't equate a home made pizza with a Jamie Oliver creation

I certainly cook from scratch, and I didn;t take her comment at all, to imply that I am wasting my time

Beatie · 03/03/2005 12:41

Velcro - you are very lucky that you have partner who makes bread. Yummy.

We do it the cheats way and use a breadmaker but it is also DH's department in our house.

bundle · 03/03/2005 12:43

velcrobott, i really don't like your tone. you totally missed the point of the joke (yes, joke) i made about jools/fishfingers. if you'd bothered to read any of my other posts you would notice that i do not give my children processed food all the time, nor do i ban them. the reasons i won't be making a pizza from scratch tonight for my children are:
a)it's my husband's turn to pick up the kids from nursery/school, and i'm going out with some of my friends for something to eat, a quick crochet and a natter
b) there are already some leftovers in the fridge for them (unprocessed)
c) we made pizzas from scratch on saturday thank you very much. we reheated a ready made one too, because i wasn't sure how hungry my girls and their friend were, but they left that one, saying it was tasteless. and i quite agreed with them and won't be buying that type again.

saying - or even thinking "FFS if you don't give a toss I do!" shows a lack of understanding on your part that other people's lives might not be black and white ie they may choose fishfingers one day and homemade pizza the next. i won't berate you over buying ready-made pizza because that's not my style, but it does show that you too opt for "convenience" sometimes.

this is not an attempt by me to start one of those "my life choices are better than yours" threads, but i really couldn't let your comments pass.

bundle · 03/03/2005 12:44

thank you, soapbox, for recognising my joke. i'll try to remember to bring the jamie book in next week for recipes

Beatie · 03/03/2005 12:46

Oh dear - I fear I started this as I made the first joke about JO faffing and what Jools might say. I just wanted to bring the thread back to a lighter tone as it was getting a bit heavy. Sorry.

wordsmith · 03/03/2005 12:51

Shall we change the subject? Back to school dinners: I would love my DS to have school dinners every day but am sure that he would just go for the crappest option if he did! (He has them for a couple of days per week). He eats reasonably healthily at home, but one of the things I found fascinating in last night's programme was how kids are so guided by their peers. They may decide they are going to try something but if the other kids say yuk, they don't bother. I am experiencing this a lot with my DS who started school in Jan - not just in food but in everything - games they play, what they wear... A friend of mine with a child in year 3 used to send her son in with his favourite packed lunch - egg mayo sarnies, but after a while he decided they 'smelled' (according to other kids) so now takes in the regulation ham ones!

Cod - what do the free school lunch kids get?

Are you in a fairly affluent area? One of the worries about school dinners is that for some it is their only meal of the day!

WideWebWitch · 03/03/2005 13:06

7 YEAR contracts! That's outrageous!

I suppose in any case - a good sarnie is probably more nutritious than some of the meals that were being served up in Kidbrook!
