Mixed feelings about the Olympics being in China but I am strangely fascinated by the opening ceremony - it's on live now for 4 horus [stifles yawn] and then highlights at 7pm.

OP posts:

Ooh, got a bit spooked there. Wondered where my posts were then realised there are TWO olympic threads {blush]

Lilymaid · 08/08/2008 14:20

Reminds me a little of the 1936 Games (and no I wasn't there at the time) especially the goose stepping soldiers.

paolosgirl · 08/08/2008 14:20

LOL Maureen . I'm not at all nationalistic, but for some reason the use of England to mean British really winds me up - and I say this as someone who grew up darrn sarrf . (Note to self - get out more )

JT · 08/08/2008 14:31

Absolutely excellent. the numbers involved must be astronomical!

I'm recording it so I ff through the less interesting bits - there aren't that many!

arfishy · 08/08/2008 14:35

How amazing is the ceremony? Agree the goose stepping soldiers were a bit off, but everything else has been jaw-dropping.

LOL at morris dancers! I bet the GB 2012 organisers are watching this absolutely horrified at what they'll have to best. I just can't see us beating this [admits defeat easily]

MaureenMLove · 08/08/2008 14:47

Those girls around the outside of the athletes must be bored stupid by now! They've been waving their arms, clapping and stepping from one foot to the other for ages!

I've signed up as a volunteer for 2012, btw!

wheresthehamster · 08/08/2008 14:48

Me too! See you there

candyfluff · 08/08/2008 14:52

BORING BORING BORING
I LIKE OLYMPICS BUT THE OPENING CEREMONY IS AS ABOVE

PheasantPlucker · 08/08/2008 14:53

Yeah, and what happened to Doctors??!!!

One day, just one day, on my own fancying a bit a rubbish TV.....

Bloody Olympics!

snickersnack · 08/08/2008 14:54

Does anyone remember the opening ceremony when the Commonwealth Games were in Manchester? I recall ballroom dancing and Corrie played a role...you just know in 4 years time it will be morris dancing and maybe some beefeaters.

MaureenMLove · 08/08/2008 14:58

Did I miss TeamGB coming in?

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:03

Don't think so, they are in Chinese alpherbetical, so not sure where GB will be

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:04

So other than of course morris dancing! What will be in 2012?
We have quite a rich history to draw from surely

PussinJimmyChoos · 08/08/2008 15:05

I saw all the fireworks and thought mm...how will GB top that in 2012....I seem to remember when we had the Rugby world cup a good few years back, we just had Michael Ball singing There are no more Steps to Climb and er..that's it... am not raving about our chances for a good show from GB tbh.....

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:05

Those poor girls arms must be aching

PussinJimmyChoos · 08/08/2008 15:06

Wonderstuff - people vomiting into the stadium, flashing their arses and shouting ooiiii...are you lookin at moi chap...aghht side now! Ahh, British binge culture...

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:09

Surely there is enough talent in this country to put on a good show, we have an arts industry that are pretty impressive no? I'm optimistic

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:10

Would be unique PJC

PussinJimmyChoos · 08/08/2008 15:12

Her maj will put in an appearance, wave regally and expect everyone to be delirious with excitement..and..thats it....

It will piss down...I'm sure of it!

MaureenMLove · 08/08/2008 15:14

I agree wonderstuff! I can't for the life of me think what we will do, but it will be great, I'm sure!

I think its the usual GB pessimistic view and even if it is fantastic, someone will put it down.

Here they are! TeamGB. Very proud. Oh that Tom Daley is a bit cute! That's very wrong! He's 14 and I'm 40 fgs!

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:16

We could have Oasis and Take That? I bet there is a reference to the Armada somewhere, and coz its East London they will have some blitz renenactment, is Vera Lynn still about?

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:17

Very wrong MML

MaureenMLove · 08/08/2008 15:20

DD mentioned the Vera Lynn aspect, but I wasn't sure if refering to international conflict, during the 'Friendly' Games, was particularly P.C.!

wonderstuff · 08/08/2008 15:24

Emm maybe, was thinking of homefront british spirit, but could be a bit look what those nasty germans did! What did they do at the commonwealth?

MaureenMLove · 08/08/2008 15:53

Didn't they do an industrial themed section? Ship building etc. I remember dancing through the ages too.
