Doing certain films or songs wins some viewers over. Sound of Music is an example of this

Some viewers voted for their favourite pro.

Some dances may get forgotten about especially if it’s after an amazing performance

These examples apply to all episodes

Edited

I agree with all of this. The audience vote is for entertainment after the judges score on the technical points. This is what adds an extra element of jeopardy to the competition. That being said, I think all @SequinsandSlippers suggestions for show tunes with a hairdressing theme would have been better for Chris - Baywatch was dreary, merely having the abs for it was not enough to carry him through as a non-dancer.

I agree too. Obviously a much-loved musical, or a classic film like The Godfather, is going to resonate more than Baywatch. I think he was the joke act. And/or they were trying to get the gay vote with his chest and abs. Which is very cynical and also seems rather clichƩd and old-fashioned.
I feel for Amy. She can't catch a break.

Jimsaidpeoplearestrange · 05/10/2026 08:23

didn't see the first week. actually went out.
Like Emma and Josh.
was surprised that Jamie was in the dance off(she reminds me of Rita Simons) but not the hairdresser.
threw me that we get 5 votes now.
(love the signing of thank you, as a parent of someone who uses makaton)

I was talking more about the people who are saying they've never wanted to see it, they don't want to see it because the film was so good, they have seen it and didn't like it etc.

Ah.
Righto.
No, can't say I'm particularly interested in seeing it (haven't seen the film either). I was never a Roald Dahl fan (but my DC were) and I'm generally not over-keen on watching child actors for any length of time.
Still, there are so many shows to see, you've got to whittle them down somehow.

Again, I know this all changes over time but the Matilda we saw was excellent. I didn't find her voice wearing. The songs are terrific, really witty and slightly edgy while still being family-friendly (the one on Strictly was the weakest, I agree with people who've said that), the book is good and the set is fabulous. I'd say it mostly feels like a modern effort and very Tim Minchin, although obviously the idea and characters all originate with Dahl.
I don't go to much at all in the West End but am very glad to have seen this.

ilovebrie8 · 05/10/2026 08:43

@SequinsandSlippers I agree re Shaun he was giving the pimp slot and what was all that by Shirley going over and hugging him that’s not the norm it was OTT and showing a bit of favouritism. He was poor.
Re Melanie brought out a sob story we don’t need sob stories, we’ve all got them.
They will both go soon I’d imagine.
The dog guy has turned out to be a bit of a dark horse.

LaMarschallin · 05/10/2026 08:46

I'm glad you enjoyed it, @AlwaysExtraHot , it obviously made a great impression on you.
It's just that people have different tastes.
Anyway, for me it's back to Strictly...

LaMarschallin · 05/10/2026 08:51

@ilovebrie8

Agree with you about Shirley's weird hugging of Shaun and Melanie's sob story - could do without both.

Eta The dog guy has turned out to be a bit of a dark horse.
That too!

DollopOfFun · 05/10/2026 09:05

I love Tim Minchin, I've seen him live a few times, and I do like most of the Matilda songs.

I winced my way through the actual west end show though 😬

Same, but JoJo isn’t going to back down is he?
He’s so full of himself and turning his back on Josh upstairs was just bloody rude.
Josh made me laugh a few times tonight.
Him and Emma are very good at what they do individually.
In the judges segment upstairs Johannes totally took over. I’m sick of all the fawning and dahhhling šŸ™„
Theyre going to keep pushing him forward, he’s sadly not going anywhere, not even back on the dancefloor it seems šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

He ticks too many boxes. Man in a dress for one.

Didn't she do a really good AT/Tango (not sure which?) one year and surprised everyone?
I'm also not an Amy fan on the show but like her on other things she's done. She is definitely a trooper with all her health problems.

Amy did an AT with Karim, but I don't remember it much to be honest.

She's had a couple of decent jives with Danny John Jules and Karim, but she's not really had any standout numbers since then.
It was a shame she was too ill to continue with JB.

ilovebrie8 · 05/10/2026 10:03

I feel sorry for Josh he needs to be given a chance on his own m. Jojo is too much

CarlaH · 05/10/2026 10:45

Selfishly I wish Amy would choose to move on as I don't think the BBC feel they can let her go after all her health issues. They could bench her I suppose, it's happened to plenty of other dancers.

Her choreography is not the most inventive.

I don't know what other opportunities she might be able to get though that would allow her to give up the Strictly gig.

I agree @CarlaH - she’s tried to turn herself into a Strictly sweetheart but she’s just not good enough. Even when she has a decent partner she gets no better than mid-table. Really hope she goes after this season.

she’s tried to turn herself into a Strictly sweetheart
I don't see how SHE'S done that. Surely it's down to Strictly for keeping her on? Although I don't really know how anyone would 'turn' someone into a Strictly sweetheart anyway. Or what a Strictly sweetheart actually is...

I do agree her choreo is not always great. I think she's been landed with more than her share of duffers though too.

LillianGish · 05/10/2026 11:45

Some harsh words for Amy here - Chris was a complete novice! Not a stage school dolly or a musician or even a sports star - not even a talented amateur like Graeme. Amy was really starting from scratch - surely the hardest partner to bring on, especially when completely unknown and therefore with no public following whatsoever. He’s good with hair- but Strictly has an entire department just for that.

MilkBreadToiletroll · 05/10/2026 11:48

I can see Jojo settling into his role and becoming an 'elder statesman', dignified figure in time. He's got the pose, experience, and knowledge.

Amy would be good with children or in a presenters role, such as BBC wales radio.

Anyone else need any careers advice? šŸ˜†

I mean with all the sickly sweet / Strictly is my life / Strictly is my dream / my Strictly family yadda yadda yadda she goes on about. I imagine a lot of the professionals feel the same but don’t go on about it.

She’s a trooper health wise & is an absolute warrior in that regard but she needs to leave Strictly now. Her time is more than up.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 05/10/2026 12:26

ScaredButUnavoidable · 04/10/2026 20:35

I had to miss the Results show as I got caught up with something with my children but from reading these comments it sounds like I haven’t missed much in terms of entertainment value.

I spent all day avoiding the Strictly Spoiler (or any online spoilers) as I wanted to hold out for the live show (once I realised there was no spoiler posted this morning on the Spoiler thread) but I might save
myself the hassle next week as it doesn’t seem like the Live Show is worth waiting for 😬

I’m surprised about Jaime….. I imagine it’s because she’s not that well known compared to other celebrities? I really enjoyed her dance though so I hope it doesn’t dent her confidence too much šŸ¤ž

She's not bad but I find Jaime rough and annoying. Presume others are finding the same. She makes Dani look almost posh.

Though TBH I can't be arsed to vote for anyone at the moment, there are too many alsorans and I've no idea who most of them are this year.

Genuinely haven't noticed her going on like this.

Ouch, that's a bit classist.

AlwaysExtraHot · 05/10/2026 13:03

I meant to say: I've liked Emma so far, but when she was doing the who's saved and who's in the DO bit I thought her delivery was a little flat, like she wasn't really engaged.
I think her relaxed air has been generally great, but it wasn't quite right for this little section IMO.

HarmonicAnalysis · 05/10/2026 14:29

"Relaxed air" is a great way to put it. She did sound like she was reading a shopping list during that part. I actually think her delivery is too casual across the board. It's more of a 'fireside chat' style, there's no proper projection of her voice in the way I'd expect from the lead (?) presenter of a primetime Saturday night BBC show. I can't always catch everything when she talks to the contestants and doesn't always seem to have the awareness of the audience at home. I'm surprised by all the praise for her. I'd never heard of her before this, and just taking her Strictly performance at face value, she seems an odd choice to me. I was never a fan of Tess, who had the personality of a wooden spoon, but what she did have was glamour that suited the show and a 'presenting voice' (stilted though that often was).

None of the three new presenters have any presence. The whole thing feels like it's held together with sticky tape and there's no one in charge. As others have said, Josh is a spare part hovering at someone's elbow, and his interjections are intrusive and not funny. I didn't like the assumed familiarity when he spoke to the judges - like they are old friends when they just aren't - felt wrong. He seemed awkward on the results couch, too. I wish Johannes would return to dancing, which is his strength. I'm not against change, and it was time for Tess and Claud to go, but I just can't fathom these presenter choices. The only thing I can think is that they must be cheap - they probably get all three for less than the cost of Tess alone!

I don’t think Amy does this any more than any of the other pros do. They all gush about their partners!

I like Amy and just wish they would give her a decent partner for once.

AlwaysExtraHot · 05/10/2026 14:59

I can't agree about Emma generally, although I agree she sounded like she was reading a shopping list doing the results Grin
I used to feel tense when Tess was on, because she would always get her timing wrong/miss a joke/crash someone else etc, whereas with Emma I feel relaxed all the time. I didn't know her before either, except she did an episode of Who Do You Think You Are, which is not quite the same I know!

I like the more casual tone and don't think it feels held together with sticky tape.
I do agree Josh's interjections are intrusive and unfunny. I hadn't thought about how he speaks to the judges, but you're quite right.
And on the results couch he just seemed to stare into the lens when it wasn't his turn to talk. I feel like he's mildly terrified the whole time.

EDITED: 'turn to talk', not 'time'
