BBC Daytime has unveiled first-look pictures and announced further casting for The Hairdresser Mysteries, the new crime drama starring Sally Phillips created by internationally acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Jim Cartwright (Road, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise, King of the Teds) and produced by Mill Bay Media.

New drama - easy watching Friday afternoon

Everyone tells their hairdresser everything and soon she becomes the hub of her new village’s secrets and revelations.

Using her own brand of uncannily developed hairdressing intuitive, empathy and understanding, Lily begins to solve the mysteries of the village.

Infused with an upbeat 1970s spirit, the nostalgic crime drama stars Sally Phillips as hairdresser, Lily Petal who opts out of the competitive city scene to buy a small village hairdressing salon at the top of a cobbled street.

Charlotte Jordan (Coronation Street) plays Clary Coombs, Lily’s bright and analytical assistant and the Watson to her Shear-lock Holmes.

Ben Castle-Gibb (You) plays PC Adam Watson, an eager young copper in the local village who falls head-over-heels for salon assistant Clary.

Sunetra Sarker (Ackley Bridge) plays Wincey Evans, the village’s local chit-chatter with a reputation as a known gossip.

Clive Rowe (The Addams Family UK Tour) plays Lonnie, the flamboyant manager of the local charity shop

Guy Henry (Holby City) plays Race Runard, the local village’s eccentric antiques dealer with a penchant for priceless teacup and saucer sets.

An array of guest stars will also appear through the series including Wendi Peters (Doctors) who plays Gloria Crudd, another newcomer to the village hoping to make a fresh start with her ice cream parlour but soon finds her old life catching up with her.

Me too, I'm thinking of this plus Ann Droid on BBC 1 should make a nice evening

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2026 18:03

I liked the 70s wallpaper and props.
It was a bit cheesy, but harmless enough
Sally Phillips doesn’t seem to age.

mogtheexcellent · 17/07/2026 18:06

My 12yo daughter loved it. I thought it was ok. Bit forced at times. Im hoping it improves. Will still watch it anyhow.

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2026 18:09

I wasn’t watching it properly, but it seemed afternoon fare with a 70s twist. The 70s had some awful wallpaper for sure !

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2026 18:11

Mammoth had a 70s theme too. Writers are going backwards now ( maybe happier times ?)

IAmKerplunk · 17/07/2026 18:12

I’m watching ep1 now and finding it easy watching anc enjoyable
I love Sally Phillips

IAmKerplunk · 17/07/2026 18:13

Was one of them the mum in Johnny Briggs? (For those old enough to remember)

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2026 18:20

I remember Johnny Briggs! I didn’t recognize the woman , but then it was on 40 odd years ago.

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2026 18:21

I also detest that Minnie Ripperton song , so laughed when they did the high note

IAmKerplunk · 17/07/2026 18:43

I got it wrong - she isn’t the mum in Johnny Briggs, but I know her from somewhere!

But the sister in Johnny Briggs is Kevs sister in Corrie!

Hatey · 17/07/2026 19:24

I have set to record. But have also checked Iplayer and all episodes are available!!
I must not binge watch!

She was a regular customer of mine when I managed Waitrose in East Sheen (South West London). Thankfully, she was super lovely and just as nice as you would imagine.

Aw I love that!

It was ok, proper day time tv. Terrible wigs though and I'm not sure what accents they were going for, especially as it was all filmed in the West Midlands! I will watch again though.
Ann Droid, on the other hand, was quite good. I've seen 2 of those episodes already

deeahgwitch · 18/07/2026 08:39

I don’t think it’s for me.
Probably too gentle daytime tv for me iykwim.
And I don’t think I could look at that awful 70’s wallpaper/ interior for much longer. 😀
I certainly wouldn’t go to a hairdressers with an interior like that, I’d have migraine in a minute.
The wigs were very poor - not your usual BBC standard.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2026 09:41

Was it a cut above the rest ? Sorry for the pun there !
I am not sure why these writers suddenly like the 70s. The music wasn’t too bad ( 70s disco will never die ) but the fashions and ghastly carpets and wallpaper were awful as was the way women were treated too back then. It wasn’t all good back then.
You don’t often get themed hairdressers, not where I live anyway.

Newbeginningsandhappy · 18/07/2026 09:47

Watched it on I-player. Didn’t realise it was daytime TV but that makes sense. Writing is a bit generic but easy watching while I’m ironing.
