BBC Daytime has unveiled first-look pictures and announced further casting for The Hairdresser Mysteries, the new crime drama starring Sally Phillips created by internationally acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Jim Cartwright (Road, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise, King of the Teds) and produced by Mill Bay Media.

New drama - easy watching Friday afternoon

Everyone tells their hairdresser everything and soon she becomes the hub of her new village’s secrets and revelations.

Using her own brand of uncannily developed hairdressing intuitive, empathy and understanding, Lily begins to solve the mysteries of the village.

Infused with an upbeat 1970s spirit, the nostalgic crime drama stars Sally Phillips as hairdresser, Lily Petal who opts out of the competitive city scene to buy a small village hairdressing salon at the top of a cobbled street.

Charlotte Jordan (Coronation Street) plays Clary Coombs, Lily’s bright and analytical assistant and the Watson to her Shear-lock Holmes.

Ben Castle-Gibb (You) plays PC Adam Watson, an eager young copper in the local village who falls head-over-heels for salon assistant Clary.

Sunetra Sarker (Ackley Bridge) plays Wincey Evans, the village’s local chit-chatter with a reputation as a known gossip.

Clive Rowe (The Addams Family UK Tour) plays Lonnie, the flamboyant manager of the local charity shop

Guy Henry (Holby City) plays Race Runard, the local village’s eccentric antiques dealer with a penchant for priceless teacup and saucer sets.

An array of guest stars will also appear through the series including Wendi Peters (Doctors) who plays Gloria Crudd, another newcomer to the village hoping to make a fresh start with her ice cream parlour but soon finds her old life catching up with her.

I’ve never really been into day time tv dramas much, but I might give this another go next week.

Davros · 18/07/2026 22:20

I quite like it, maybe a bit too childish. I loved the 70s, mostly because I was a teenager then 😹 But the decor cliches, while true, weren’t EVERYWHERE and they often get the 60s mixed up with the 70s on the telly . My mum and dad were quite trendy, we had Habitat furniture, Tintawn carpet, dark green ceilings…

FieryA · 18/07/2026 22:40

It's a bit slow and not much suspense or mystery in Ep 1. I don't like the constant music playing in the background of the parlour. Too much with the dialogues on. Onto Ep 2 now, let's see how it goes.

Finally seen so now read the replies

I worked out it was Dobby

it’s a good cast tho not sure of all the dancing and singing

and Sally looks very thin. She def lost weight esp as Austin also being on

I did not like it at all . I was really surprised that Sally Phillips gave her name to this. It reminded me of Crossroads

Davros · 19/07/2026 09:50

I used to love Crossroads 😹

Umanresources · 20/07/2026 06:36

I quite enjoyed this. More like Shakespeare and Hathaway and Agatha Raisin, than Midsomer Murders or Poirot. The music is my era, so I loved that. The high note in the Minnie Ripperton song was a nod to Smack the Pony and the duet with Doon Mackichan to Without You, which is one of my all time favourites.
i do remember the seventies as being very brown. I liked the locks of hair on the board as well. It’s just a pleasant hour’s entertainment, so I’ll look forward to the rest of them. It’s good to see something with women of a certain age, with no enhancements.

MShadows · 20/07/2026 07:55

watched it last night. thought it was silly but fun. will be watching them all.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/07/2026 11:16

It’s easy watching

I have a very low bar for tv crime but crikey this is testing me! I’ll watch it when getting ready to fall asleep but for me it’s behind the Good Ship Murder and that’s currently ranked bottom. What year is it supposed to be, I thought now and she’s got 70’s decor but the weatherman is dressed oddly. Ludwig is starting again next week, that will be good.

DION62 · 25/07/2026 13:16

Watched the first one via iplayer, well half the first episode. Let’s just say I won’t be watching anymore! Utter rubbish, boring, bad acting which could have been so good given the cast. Ann Droid on the other hand, so heartfelt and funny at the same time, looking forward to every one of these. Well done for this!

tinyspiny · 25/07/2026 13:18

We gave up after 15 minutes , it’s terrible and I’m not sure why Sally Phillips has agreed to do it .

Davros · 26/07/2026 08:07

I enjoyed episode 2 much more than 1

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/07/2026 15:33

I would say it’s not that bad but I fell asleep in it and woke up with credits running

I really like Sally Phillips and Charlotte Jordan (She played a great devious cow in corrie). There is a compliment there 😁. They are both so wasted in this, quite why they thought this was a good career move who knows! Rubbish!

ItsmeMargo · 26/07/2026 19:53

I’ve watched them all, because I love a female- led not too bloodthirsty murder series!

Found it quite cringe in parts. And what’s with the hair? The wigs are terrible.

I loved Agatha Raisin, especially the first two series (Didn’t think it was the same without Katie Wix) - thought this would be similar, but not so invested in the supporting characters. Clary is nice, and I like the policeman – although I can’t remember his name – but that gobby Liverpudlian woman: why would anybody be friends with her?

Must admit that at first I thought the whole thing was set in the 70s. Then someone mentioned about an app, and thought: oh hang on.

It’s not great. I love the idea of people being kind to each other and having a dance, but when it happens, it’s just very… Contrived.

It was the young electrician.

Nice to see the actress who played Cilla Battersby in this episode.

He overheard the weatherman having a go at and threatening Gloria (Cilla Battersby) as she was the weatherman's birth mother. Electrician killed him to protect Gloria.
