Just watched episode 1 and so disappointed. I mean I know it'll take a while to get Michael Landon's bouffant hair and the girls tumbling down the hill out of my mind but these characters seem like cardboard cutouts in comparison. The whole episode moves from being very very slow to very dramatic in a heartbeat - it just seems really disjointed. And dont get me started on the mumbling of the adult characters. Admittedly I did have a fan going full blast, but even so. Just found it completely unengaging.

Oh no, is this a remake thingy?

That sounds shit

bizzey · 09/07/2026 22:05

Ohh no .
I just remembered it was starting today .
I was looking forward to it .

I will still give it a go .

Chamomileteaplease · 09/07/2026 22:09

LHOTP does not need a remake surely?? It was perfect as it was 🥰

Nelliemellie · 09/07/2026 22:14

I am watching them on sky/great tv. I watched them all as a child. Some really brilliant stories. I would never watch a remake.

AshtonGardens · 09/07/2026 22:17

Fan of the books and have never seen the previous tv series. Am not particularly interested in another heavy-handed Netflix adaptation. Their output has been really disappointing the past couple of years.

penelopelady · 09/07/2026 22:34

I am worried Ma is going to run out of limbs to injure.
her role appears to be there to scream, faint and generally swoon every 5 minutes… she is a fucking liability.
and the mumbling yes! I know I have lost some of the major plot points to it.

TheChosenTwo · 09/07/2026 22:40

I spotted this on Netflix earlier and had to call my mum to let her know, she was thrilled! She used to watch this on a Sunday morning. I left the room as soon as the music started in the end because from memory (and I must have been around 8-10ish) it was the most dreary programme I ever had the misfortune to clap eyes on 😂
so not one I’ll be tuning in for but my mum is one very happy old lady! (She’d clout me round the back of the head if she knew I’d called her old, and she isn’t really but honestly when I was 10 she would have been 30 and now I’m 40 and still can’t imagine ever watching this for at least another 40 years when I may have slowed down my pace of life!)

bizzey · 09/07/2026 22:49

I am sure it use to be on coming home from school time .
Secondary school .
I use to remember coming home home and my mum on the settee with tissues as she had been watching it .(Or was it hat Lassie 🤔?)

Any how ..my son came home to me watching Escape to the Country.

He would come in and and we would decide..NO !

bizzey · 09/07/2026 22:49

I will still give a few episodes a go though.

It was on after church on a Sunday from what I recall…

lemoncurdcupcake · 10/07/2026 14:04

Oh no! I was so looking forward to wasting some early mat leave days with that series.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 10/07/2026 16:15

Maybe it'll get better....??

I lasted about 20 minutes before giving up. Laura was played by (at a guess) a 10 - 12 year old and Mary was adolescent. Some of the magic of the book is that it was all told through the eyes of a very small child. If I recall correctly, Laura was actually a toddler when they settled in that area; her age was adjusted upwards a bit in LHOTP to fit the narrative. It is a narrative of a small child who’s hugely observant of the natural world, and who feels the place to be very remote.

More interesting is that it looked like Netflix is going develop a story about the Native American population and their interactions with the Ingalls family, but whether the series will reflect the racism and ambiguity in the original books, or develop another story entirely, I couldn’t hang around to find out.

mondaytosunday · 10/07/2026 16:27

Gosh what’s next, remaking the Waltons? Why, just why?

Positivepositron · 10/07/2026 16:31

Well I thought it was pretty good.
I know that I probably watched some of the original series as a child but must have been too young to really remember it and I definitely wasn't a huge fan so it isn't having to live up to something.
I didn't notice mumbling and it seemed exciting and interesting.

Needmorelego · 10/07/2026 16:47

I am on episode 4 (so halfway through) and as a massive fan of the books and the actual history of the family I am really enjoying it.
I hated the 70s TV show. I just found it cheesy. Although I don't think I watched it until repeats possibly shown late 80s/early 90s and I think I just found it a bit dated.
Apparently if you go to any of the Little House festivals held at the various places the Ingalls lived that happen every year fans are apparently divided into those that love the 70s show and those that love the books and the two groups don't mix 😂
Anyway the Netflix version....
The story isn't quite accurate to the book because in the book Carrie was already born when they went to Kansas
and Laura and Mary were aged around 5 and 7.
In real life the girls were only 3 and 5 when they moved there and Carrie was born there.
Obviously finding child actors that young who can act is fairly difficult so the girls have been aged up to about 11 and 13.
I don't mind that.
Mary's "It's sooooo unfair" teen moments are quite amusing.
I love the dog playing Jack - I don't know what breed he is. He's really lovely looking.
There's a lot of criticism about yet more "made up" characters and situations.
The thing is Laura Ingalls Wilder herself made a lot of the other people in her stories up - a mix of completely fictional, half remembered memories and amalgams of people.
However Dr Tann was a real person and yes he was black.
That is historically accurate.
The new show was filmed in Manitoba, Canada apparently and it looks beautiful.
I really like this version 😍

That's already been done (2021 - new version of the original Waltons film "The Homecoming")
This isn't a remake of the 70s Little House show though.
It's an alternative adaption of the book.

JustOneMoreScroll · 10/07/2026 16:52

I loved the original as a child so don't think I want to taint my memories. I had to stop watching the remake of Anne of Green Gables as it was too gritty

AgnesMcDoo · 10/07/2026 16:53

I’d like to see a version that is more faithful to the books.

whilst I loved the Michael landon show as a child it diverged a long with from the true story - which was far more dramatic and raw.

Needmorelego · 10/07/2026 16:55

Thinking about it - the aging up of the girls isn't too bad because if season 2 is based on "Banks of Plum Creek" then if there's a season 3 the next book along there is actually a time jump of a few years because Laura Ingalls Wilder didn't want to write about a bad time in the family life.
So it would actually work quite well.

WhitegreeNcandle · 10/07/2026 16:56

Oh, so disappointed to hear this. I was really looking forwards to it.

A previous LHOTP thread led me to the Wilder podcast. V good for any fans of it!

Don't be disappointed.
Watch it.
You might like it.

FlippittyFlop · 10/07/2026 17:16

Watched it all. Best described as pleasant watching. I'm looking forward to the next season. I found the old Michael Landon series very cheesy, preachy and over the top. This isn't as dramatic, but I liked the storyline and development of the characters. I've never read the books , so not too sure how accurate it is. It's very much a prequel to the Walnut Grove story.

Greedybilly · 10/07/2026 17:29

I'm off sick on episode 3 and absolutely loving it!

VideoVox · 10/07/2026 17:29

I’m up to episode 4 and enjoying it, I liked the 70s version too (which I grew up watching)though it’s very different.
