Just watched episode 1 and so disappointed. I mean I know it'll take a while to get Michael Landon's bouffant hair and the girls tumbling down the hill out of my mind but these characters seem like cardboard cutouts in comparison. The whole episode moves from being very very slow to very dramatic in a heartbeat - it just seems really disjointed. And dont get me started on the mumbling of the adult characters. Admittedly I did have a fan going full blast, but even so. Just found it completely unengaging.

Just watched episode 2 (with the subtitles on!). Much better. Mr Edwards is good and his relationship with the family made for a much more engaging story. Caroline is still doing far too much staring mournfully into the distance for my liking. And most of the acting just seems too modern somehow - I can't explain exactly what I mean by this but its something to do with gestures and body language.

@ThaneOfGlamis do you mean the youngest one named Perley?
Yes - very big age gap between the older siblings 🤔

Yes, Perley. Came along a long time after the next youngest sibling and had older unmarried sisters of child bearing age. Seems.more than a little suspicious to me!

Maybe 🤔
If not....poor Mother Wilder. Probably thought she was well past all that.

I enjoyed https://prairiefiresbook.com/.

I loved the books as a kid but only watched the occasional TV episode. If the new one is more faithful to the books that sounds promising.

I just bought it on audible after hearing about it in this thread.

Prairie Fires is a brilliant book, but, warning! It takes apart the magic of the books and reveals the much more complicated reality behind them. I found it fascinating, but decided not to give it to my DM, who adores the Little House books and believes that they’re completely true.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, I loved the original 70's series as a child but rewatching in adulthood I found them to be incredibly corny.

Haven't read the books in years but have added Prairie Fires to my kindle.

Chickadee26 · Yesterday 10:22

I have read things online telling a story of rugged hardships, and am interested in the true story of their lives back then.

I should finished watching the new series before I listen to prairie fires.

I loved the books as a child and watched the tv series. I rewatched the series recently and through adult eyes it was just a Michael Landon ego trip! He was also the producer. But it was also a bit grittier than my memory. People dying young etc.
Might have a look at the new version. And might re read the books.

I am on episode 4 (so halfway through) and as a massive fan of the books and the actual history of the family I am really enjoying it.
I hated the 70s TV show. I just found it cheesy. Although I don't think I watched it until repeats possibly shown late 80s/early 90s and I think I just found it a bit dated.
Apparently if you go to any of the Little House festivals held at the various places the Ingalls lived that happen every year fans are apparently divided into those that love the 70s show and those that love the books and the two groups don't mix 😂
Anyway the Netflix version....
The story isn't quite accurate to the book because in the book Carrie was already born when they went to Kansas
and Laura and Mary were aged around 5 and 7.
In real life the girls were only 3 and 5 when they moved there and Carrie was born there.
Obviously finding child actors that young who can act is fairly difficult so the girls have been aged up to about 11 and 13.
I don't mind that.
Mary's "It's sooooo unfair" teen moments are quite amusing.
I love the dog playing Jack - I don't know what breed he is. He's really lovely looking.
There's a lot of criticism about yet more "made up" characters and situations.
The thing is Laura Ingalls Wilder herself made a lot of the other people in her stories up - a mix of completely fictional, half remembered memories and amalgams of people.
However Dr Tann was a real person and yes he was black.
That is historically accurate.
The new show was filmed in Manitoba, Canada apparently and it looks beautiful.
I really like this version 😍

I agree.

Love the books and, while I think you could lift the dialogue verbatim and turn it into a great script, I understand why they've made the choices they have.

I love the book in themselves but also find the real-life background and family story interesting. The changes are acceptable, I think. Only 3 episodes in, though.

Needmorelego · Yesterday 20:12

Just finished all 8 episodes.
Even though I knew how the series would end I am all emotional 😭🥺
I have to say though....well done Caroline for so quietly being in labour to deliver such a MASSIVE and non wrinkly one month early baby.
😁👶
