Just watched episode 1 and so disappointed. I mean I know it'll take a while to get Michael Landon's bouffant hair and the girls tumbling down the hill out of my mind but these characters seem like cardboard cutouts in comparison. The whole episode moves from being very very slow to very dramatic in a heartbeat - it just seems really disjointed. And dont get me started on the mumbling of the adult characters. Admittedly I did have a fan going full blast, but even so. Just found it completely unengaging.

I’d like to see a version that is more faithful to the books.

whilst I loved the Michael landon show as a child it diverged a long with from the true story - which was far more dramatic and raw.

Agree. There seems little point in making a slightly roughed up homage to the original series (which I loved) when an actual close look at the source material and historical setting would be really interesting.

Didn't LIW write herself "I wrote the truth, but not all of the truth", which I've always found fascinating.

ETA I will watch though. I wanted M Landon and Ma to adopt me.

somewhereintheworld · 10/07/2026 18:28

I never watched the original series, so I've got nothing to compare it with. Watched first ep and quite liked it. Couldn't believe it when Dr Tann turned up and he was Dr Reynolds from New Amsterdam! 😄

macaroon8 · 10/07/2026 21:19

Just binged it over a couple of nights. I quite liked it.

MNLurker1345 · 10/07/2026 21:33

I watched every episode as a child, OMG, I loved it.

I don’t know if I can watch the remake. Call me cheesy but it did have an impact on my childhood. As did Ann of Green Gables and Black Beauty. I am so sad!

I will give it a go.

John Boy, Laura and Mary. “G’night grandma, g’night grandpa”.

And Nellie Olsen was most probably my earliest introduction to villainy.

OhMyDaysAndNights · 10/07/2026 21:35

I loved the books although I read them many many years ago. The original series was just stuck in Plum Creek and didn’t really delve into the reality of the lives of the pioneers. I have watched 3 episodes so far and it’s engaging and doesn’t sugar coat the sacrifices that Caroline made to follow her husband. I seem to recall suggestions that he had bipolar and was given to wild notions and adventures. This has peaked my interest and would love to read a L I W biography if anyone has a recommendation.

Glittermoonlight · 10/07/2026 21:41

I really enjoyed it. The original series made up so many things/characters that just weren’t in the books. Laura & Mary are older, but then it would have been difficult getting younger children to play the parts. Am looking forward to series 2.

Chickadee26 · 10/07/2026 21:46

I wached three episodes. Laura and Mr Edwards aŕe spot on, Charles and Caroline not so much. Mary is good, and Eliza. Hoping that Carrie won't exist lol.

Micheal Landon was the ideal manly man, and hard to recast him in my book
Looking forward to meeting the Olson family.

Well I thought it was pretty good.
I know that I probably watched some of the original series as a child but must have been too young to really remember it and I definitely wasn't a huge fan so it isn't having to live up to something.
I didn't notice mumbling and it seemed exciting and interesting.

I’m loving it too. I do remember watching it as a child, and running down hills with my arms spread out Laura Ingalls-style, but that hasn’t stopped me from enjoying this new version.

penelopelady · 09/07/2026 22:34

I am worried Ma is going to run out of limbs to injure.
her role appears to be there to scream, faint and generally swoon every 5 minutes… she is a fucking liability.
and the mumbling yes! I know I have lost some of the major plot points to it.

Edited

😁

I loved the books as a kid but only watched the occasional TV episode. If the new one is more faithful to the books that sounds promising.

Prairie Fires — a new biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder

The story I heard is Charles did move the family around and the chatacters/family members were totally sugar coated. In reality they were half starved and in poor health, with no security. ---- Mary was sickly and had seizures, Carrie actually was more of the caregiver of her siblings
Correct me if I am wrong, it's been a while since I read about them.
I never read the actual series.

I never saw the TV series but loved the books so mu h as a kid. Not sure if I can face watching this as worried it won't be as good as the books! I hated Anne with an E and had to re-watch the brilliant 80s series...still so good

Neveranynamesleft · 10/07/2026 22:39

Sacrilege IMO

You do know that "John Boy" and Granma and Grampa are not from Little House on the Prairie 😂
Wrong programme.

Sacrilege IMO

Out of curiosity why?
In the 1970s a TV company decided to create a show based on a fictionalised memoir book published in the 1930s.
It was a loose adaption with lots of made up characters and stories not from the books.
Is that version sacrilege to you too?
Unless you mean sacrilege to the actual original book?

"Pioneer Girl" is another excellent book.
It's the original unpublished novel plus lots of historical facts along side it.

PrincessofEuphrania · 10/07/2026 23:23

I absolutely loved the books as a child. I read them so many times. Unfortunately I took them at face value and was so disappointed when I read Prairie Fires which kind of ruined it for me. I felt cheated. Silly I know. I should have left well alone and just believed in the fantasy!

Needmorelego · 10/07/2026 23:34

@PrincessofEuphrania Prairie Fires is an amazing book isn't it?
I do find it hard to re-read the chapters about the 4th July town festival in Little Town on the Prairie now I know the publishers basically said "you need to put lots of patriotic scenes in this" 😁

RomainingCalm · 10/07/2026 23:43

I’ve watched the first episode, I’d been really looking forward to this, but think I need to watch a couple more. I love the books and have re-read them many times. Some of the Netflix ‘drama’ jars a bit but I suspect you need to watch it as a story in its own right rather than a faithful account of the books.

If anyone’s looking for a good LHOTP read I would thoroughly recommend ‘Caroline’ by Sarah Miller which tells the story from Ma’s perspective.

Bobbieiris · 10/07/2026 23:44

I've seen prairie fires is only £2.99 on Kindle but is it a hard read? I have two toddlers so only have so much reading time 🤣🤣 it looks interesting though

Needmorelego · 10/07/2026 23:51

@RomainingCalm "Caroline" was such a good book.
How she didn't end up burying Charles in the vegetable patch I don't know !!
It totally killed off my being a pioneer fantasy 😂

5foot5 · 11/07/2026 00:30

I have only watched the first episode so far and, while it does differ somewhat from the books, I tend to agree with @Needmorelego that it seems a whole heap better than the 1970s adaptation. I will definitely be watching a few more.

I am another fan of "Prairie Fires", brilliant book. @Bobbieiris can definitely recommend it.

LHOTP does not need a remake surely?? It was perfect as it was 🥰

No it wasn't! Not if you've read the books. The new version isn't perfect but, so far, seems a little closer to the source material
