Just watched episode 1 and so disappointed. I mean I know it'll take a while to get Michael Landon's bouffant hair and the girls tumbling down the hill out of my mind but these characters seem like cardboard cutouts in comparison. The whole episode moves from being very very slow to very dramatic in a heartbeat - it just seems really disjointed. And dont get me started on the mumbling of the adult characters. Admittedly I did have a fan going full blast, but even so. Just found it completely unengaging.

Watched a couple of episodes, found it ok but not enough to be on mymust make sure I watch it all list. Just think, like some others, that it’s often difficult watching remakes if you’ve seen the original as you constantly compare them

Most of these pioneers were from the east or northern parts of the US which was the anti-slavery part so they were unlikely to have been involved with the buying/selling of slaves.
Doesn't mean they weren't racist - but they were more likely to be from the anti slavery side.

Loved these books as a DC. I used to try to emulate some of the phrases Laura used, which didn’t go well for me at school!

It seemed clear even then that a lot of stuff in the books was sanitised. Our teacher and my mother explained that. The family dynamics portrayed were interesting.

Read some newspaper articles about Laura in which Charles Ingalls didn’t come across well. For example he took many risky decisions.

Never watched the 70s TV show. Enjoyed the first episode of this one and will watch it. wondered if they’ve tried to reach a wider audience and be less ‘gritty’ than Anne with an E, and in doing so still pulled some punches. I’m OK with that as I don’t enjoy violent shows.

‘The Long Winter’ in particular stuck with me. The threat and fear of starvation and freezing.

Like some PPs I thought Almanzo and Royal seemed wildly romantic!

The Ingalls actually had another family living with them during the Long Winter!

Just finished it and loved it. Some of the speech was too modern (they would never have said 'OK' or 'Hi') and they were all a bit too clean for dirt-poor homesteaders, apart from (SPOILER ALERT) after the fire. Also Ma and the girls would have spent hours and hours chopping wood, cooking, washing and cleaning but I suppose that wouldn't make for interesting telly!

Production-wise I really liked the way each episode began with the sounds of the prairie (birdsong, wind etc) rather than music. I'm very pleased there will be a 2nd season.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a Netflix version of the books and once you accept that it's enjoyable. Laura Ingalls Wilder was taken out of circulation in American schools because of her writing about native Americans. So I found the fictional netflix version with her being best friends with a native American quite entertaining.

Books are always going to be better than the screen adaptations.

I always stay well away from adaptations of my favourite books because they're never going to be as good.

I recall that in the book there was a very detailed conversation about the Indians that had quite varied points of view including "the only good Indian is dead Indian" and mentions of the Minnesotsa massacre but also others more sympathetic as they were illegally settled in Indian territory. I cannot recall all the details but it struck me as balanced and powerful when I read it decades ago
