Watching at tv pace , it doesn’t end for ages , but as it’s all on I player obviously some may have watched it all.
I admit that I’ve been at a loose end and needed something to watch this week.
What do others think ? I did enjoy it. It was a strange drama and I can’t tell if it was satire or a black comedy or just the holiday from hell! Or all three.
The policeman made me laugh ( how lovely was he) and a few quips. Some really good acting too.
I feel guilty for binging it.

It was filmed during Malta’s winter , so the cast was cold a lot of the time and apparently using hot water bottles to stay warm!

I'd be interested to know what others think but ..... I've always thought it is Flick that starts off the wildfires. It is meant to be the hottest, driest time of the year - who else leaves burning twigs, together with bunches of dry herbs up high where there is a breeze that fans the flames? Of course, the Malta setting is more barren than Greece, with its olive groves and scrubby vegetation.

It is also the way both Flick and James, separately, say very airily "it happens every year" and then carry on fiddling, or piping, while .... burns ..

I completely get Zoe. It’s not just the kiss, it’s that everything you’ve ever been taught is a lie. You can be the perfect loving wife, you can be a martyr, you can have a noble job (like teaching) but you’ll still get cheated on and end up poor. So what’s the point?

Interesting @MulberryBrandy
There was a flash of panic too on Zoe’s face at one stage in relation to the fire raging as if she felt some guilt.
Obviously there were panicked looks re the fire but this was different.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 02/07/2026 23:49

I did say to DH, after the burning-witchy-twiggy scene, ‘that’ll start a fire!’ I thought that was another point being made, Flick being totally self-indulgent, doggedly performing her rituals but completely unconcerned about any possible consequences.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/07/2026 08:26

I dunno - cleansing fire has been a human ritual for thousands of years. So I’d say it’s more likely Flick started the fire deliberately, and probably does every year.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 11:43

Made me laugh when Fliss said ‘ we need a pregnant goat really’ and Zoe kind of turned around as if she may see one about.
It was bizarre that scene in so many ways.

I found the entire thing bizarre. It was a four episode drama crammed into eight. There were very few likeable or sympathetic characters and its political messages were screamed. I felt obligated to watch it to the end but it was a chore. Self indulgent nonsense.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 12:22

I did like Nat paddle boarding the stolen keys over to the yacht! A one woman superhero.
I wonder if it started out as one thing and then morphed into another as time went on? It wasn’t based on a book , so more poetic licence allowed ?
It was certainly weird and a lot different to the usual ‘ let’s cover up a murder , or long lost relative getting revenge ‘ that so many end up being.

Totally agree with this!

I don't understand why, if they had the key to the yacht, they didn't just round everyone else up and save them from having to row boats to who knows where 🤔

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 13:20

I wondered about the yacht too.
It had an odd ending with the boats didn’t it. I felt sorry for the children.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/07/2026 13:22

I thought I had understood the ending but you are all making me doubt myself.

Surely they were all rowing towards the yacht, which they would board and be taken to safety?

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 13:25

Maybe , but as someone pointed out , getting up a yacht is hard to do with children and luggage.
Did they have a ladder of some kind on board ?

OP posts:
BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/07/2026 13:30

How else would the first two aboard have boarded?

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 13:36

You saw Jacob and Wil climb up I think , but it was someone on here who said they needed a ladder and that couldnt happen that far out ( someone who seemed to know what they were talking about )
Then they would have to lift the anchor as well which isn’t easy to do apparently. They didn’t think about all that !

Yes, I think so too - although Zoe will need Dan to tow her and the children in that small dinghy.

which they would board
There is no problem with that either - the modern yacht has a scooped transom (back) with an integrated ladder, for ease of swimming off the back, etc.

and be taken to safety?
This is what I think is far more problematic. Solomon couldn't handle a boat, the 3 younger men have already trashed one, Jacob has been badly stung by jellyfish. They do not have knowledge of steering a safe course to the mainland - islands are usually part of a group with chains of rocks in between.......

That’s what I thought.
