French TV series recommendations after Spiral and Le Bureau des Légendes

I’m learning French and really enjoy watching French TV (with the subtitles as a safety net 😉). I’ve watched Spiral/Engrenages and just finished Le Bureau des Légendes - any recommendations of engrossing series?

Very different from Spiral but Call my Agent is great. Lupin is good too. I’m watching with interest as I’d like some more up to date recommendations.

Pleasedontdothat · 26/04/2026 08:04

I forgot I’d watched both Call My Agent and Lupin - also very good!

Drops of God on Apple. Not a police drama but something really different and intriguing. It’s a French production but with Japanese elements too.

Pleasedontdothat · 26/04/2026 10:09

Thanks @Highonmyownsupply id not heard of that one - sounds intriguing

Astrid: Murder in Paris. Really enjoyed this. Took about 3 episodes before I got into it. OH enjoyed it too. Main character is autistic and has some lovely quirks. Judge Marianne - mystery and murder. Marianne is the judge who solves the crimes, along with the police. It’s very funny as well.
These are Walter presents.
Candice Renoir- she’s a police officer and juggles family life with her job. A mix of drama, comedy and romance. It’s on a couple of platforms. I’m waiting for the last two series to be released though.

Just watched Seven Lives of Lea and really enjoyed it.

It’s on Netflix and you have to be open minded to time travel.

The Line, une village Francais on ITVabout WW2 French life under the Germans is excellent.
Riviera perdu about two missing young girls on Netflix
Bonfire of Destiny and Women at War both with Audrey Fleurot from Spiral and the Line. Not sure where they are being shown at the moment.
Agree with all the recommendations above.

There’s a French detective series called Alex Hugo. I’ve got series 1 on dvd but not found the rest yet. It’s set in the alps in an area I know well.

also recommend Marseille about a corrupt Mayor. That’s Netflix.

edit to say it’s on Prime.

Just watched the first one of the Invisibles. It seems to be police group finding out who the unknown dead body is before a week is up, otherwise they are put into an unmarked grave. The lead policeman likes to give them a name based on where they were found, rather than calling them John/Jane Doe. It’s a Walter Presents one.
A complete contrast on Netflix is the Parisian Agency, a family of estate agents selling huge and or expensive properties. Thankfully there is no drama involved, they are just all lovely people and the properties are gorgeous!

Love Spiral,love Astrid.
Others I have enjoyed, but don't know if they are still available, were Les Dames (starring Spiral's Gilou), Les temoins (with Spiral's Karlsson), Disparue,

I can't remember the name now, but there was a series on Netflix about a family firm of estate agents selling amazing properties to very wealthy people in Paris. I really enjoyed the escapism of that. Someone might know it.

I watch BFM tv live also on the website. Hard to follow sometimes, but enjoyable if there is something "French" happening. The coverage is excellent. It was my go to during the awful Bataclan and the other atrocities around that time, and the fire in Notre Dame. Kind of the French version of Sky rolling news.

I also watch "Urgences" on Facebook, they are short clips of the emergency services all over France dealing with callouts. I am getting very good at French medical terms now!

Umanresources · Yesterday 12:46

@maftaz I’d just recommended the Parisian Agency about the gorgeous properties. Must have crossed posts. It’s totally the opposite of Place in the sun, where they want the same sort of properties for £40,000 😂

That was it and yes we cross posted! Thanks for the title. So enjoyable to watch.

Call my agent is great.

There are a lot of French subtitled police dramas under “Walter Presents” on channel four.

I’ve just started watching Haut Potentiel Intellectuel on Disney+ because I’m a big fan of Audrey Fleurot. If you select in to be in French w English subtitles then you get the original French version. It’s quite comedic and a bit lighter than Spiral but I’m enjoying it, her character is kind of hilarious.

Charlottapannacotta · Yesterday 22:16

Oh I’m reading with interest. I watched Blood Coadt recently and enjoyed it. If you can used to graphic shooting it’s interesting

TulipsMakeMeHappy · Yesterday 23:08

I second Haut Potentiel and Astrid, and add the three series of The Wall (although Quebecois French so different). Mademoiselle Holmes is silly but watchable, particularly after you get through the first episode.

Hi. I’ve just searched for this on Disney+ but can’t find it on there. I like Audrey Fleurot as well. I’ve got the second series downloaded on a pen drive, but have missed the first one. It’s dubbed in Russian with Russian subtitles, but I’ve found out how to change it to French with English subtitles thank goodness.

Sorry, search for HIP High Intellectual Potential. I think there’s both the US remake and the one w Audrey on there so yo have to make sure to pick the latter and change the language and subtitles on it.

I loved Engrenages!
I'm currently watching Etoile on amazon prime. It's hilarious. It's a comedy series about two ballet companies set in NYC and in Paris so more franglais than Engrenages but there's still plenty of French - some with subtitles and some without.

Pleasedontdothat · Today 11:06

Thanks for the additional suggestions, I will
look forward to exploring those. Does anyone else struggle more with some accents than others? If only every French actor spoke like President Macron I’d be fine without subtitles but some of the slang in police dramas in particular, combined with super fast delivery is almost incomprehensible 😳

I can't find the French version on there - are you in the UK?
