Fans of Line of Duty, Black Doves and Happy Valley will have their void soon filled with Secret Service, ITV’s latest espionage drama. They recently unveiled a first-look trailer, and the five-part series looks to be a nail-biting watch (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a70770212/best-tv-thrillers-april/).

Led by Gemma Arterton, the series comes from the Oscar-winning director James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) and is based on the best-selling novel (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/book-reviews/g28256073/best-books/) of the same name by Tom Bradby (which you might also recognise as ITV’s resident anchorman and friend of Prince William and Harry).

MI6 officer Kate Henderson (Arterton) is a mother to two teenage children and wife to civil servant Stuart (Spall). All seems pretty ordinary, but this is an espionage thriller, after all. Henderson’s concealed career is actually being the head of the Russia desk at the Secret Intelligence Service.

Secret Service immerses us in the murky world of espionage, introducing us to Kate, who to the everyday person seems a loving, caring mum of two who works as a civil servant alongside her husband Stuart.

But behind the illusion, Kate is the Head of the Russian Desk at MI6, regularly travelling for work and burying secrets that should never see the light of da

In her undercover role, Henderson gains the knowledge that a senior UK politician may in fact be a Russian asset.

In a race against the clock, she must find out the politician’s identity, protect herself and her family, all whilst remaining covert - despite a shocking murder throwing her MI6 division under the spotlight.

When an op in Malta leads Kate to discover that a senior UK politician may be a secret Russian asset, it becomes a race against the clock – not just against her superiors, but against time itself – to uncover the politician’s identity, all while protecting herself and her family.

But the deeper she goes, the harder it becomes to separate what’s real from what’s lies, because in this world, information is power… and some people will do anything to control it.

Exploring the enduring pressure between the UK and Russia, Secret Service’s timely political take on the espionage genre guarantees to grip the nation.

Watching both episodes 4&5 today as home alone. So can catch up on other stuff during the week.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 04/05/2026 13:24

I didn’t suspect the husband.
I think the boss.

I didn’t suspect the husband.
I think the boss.

It was the way the 3 of them. Wife hubby Imogen all sat together discussing the video of A man in her hotel room

I think it’s rafe aka hubby and Imogen shagging

I am also known to be wrong many times 😂

Recklessismymiddlename · 04/05/2026 14:59

Just finished. And yes I had seen before, but strangely enough, had not seen the last episode.

I hope there is another series, whether with the same or different characters, a bit like Capture but not as stressful 🤣

GrillaMilla · 04/05/2026 15:45

I don't think hubby has been in it enough to suddenly be a massive part of the storyline.
But I could be wrong.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/05/2026 15:50

But rafe is well known so …….

OP posts:
GrillaMilla · 04/05/2026 18:20

Intriguing!

NewspaperTaxis · 04/05/2026 18:52

Roger Allam has a small role for an actor whose fame and pay grade is significantly higher.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/05/2026 19:15

Who is Roger ?

OP posts:
NewspaperTaxis · 04/05/2026 19:42

Isn't he the deep-voiced foreign secretary (?), late 50s, was Endeavour's boss in the long-running TV series of that name, had a small role in The Queen.

But I struggle a bit with who is the foreign secretary cos we never seem to see them do foreign secretary things.

GrillaMilla · 04/05/2026 21:12

Is it me or is it hard to follow the story, I haven't a clue what they're talking about! But weirdly I'm enjoying it

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/05/2026 21:15

I get the story. But I do need to watch and not go on phone

OP posts:
GrillaMilla · 04/05/2026 21:17

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/05/2026 21:30

Does everyone have a large enough telly that they can read the texts or emails? I don't.

We don't have a massive TV, but it's large. I've given up even trying to read what text messages etc on screen say. Even if I pause and rewind and then slo mo, I've no idea what the words are

No, I can’t see what the texts and emails say. Mines an average size tv

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/05/2026 09:37

No. I pause. Go to tv. Squint etc

if they want us to know what they are typing they need to make bigger
