Fans of Line of Duty, Black Doves and Happy Valley will have their void soon filled with Secret Service, ITV’s latest espionage drama. They recently unveiled a first-look trailer, and the five-part series looks to be a nail-biting watch (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a70770212/best-tv-thrillers-april/).

Led by Gemma Arterton, the series comes from the Oscar-winning director James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) and is based on the best-selling novel (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/book-reviews/g28256073/best-books/) of the same name by Tom Bradby (which you might also recognise as ITV’s resident anchorman and friend of Prince William and Harry).

MI6 officer Kate Henderson (Arterton) is a mother to two teenage children and wife to civil servant Stuart (Spall). All seems pretty ordinary, but this is an espionage thriller, after all. Henderson’s concealed career is actually being the head of the Russia desk at the Secret Intelligence Service.

Secret Service immerses us in the murky world of espionage, introducing us to Kate, who to the everyday person seems a loving, caring mum of two who works as a civil servant alongside her husband Stuart.

But behind the illusion, Kate is the Head of the Russian Desk at MI6, regularly travelling for work and burying secrets that should never see the light of da

In her undercover role, Henderson gains the knowledge that a senior UK politician may in fact be a Russian asset.

In a race against the clock, she must find out the politician’s identity, protect herself and her family, all whilst remaining covert - despite a shocking murder throwing her MI6 division under the spotlight.

When an op in Malta leads Kate to discover that a senior UK politician may be a secret Russian asset, it becomes a race against the clock – not just against her superiors, but against time itself – to uncover the politician’s identity, all while protecting herself and her family.

But the deeper she goes, the harder it becomes to separate what’s real from what’s lies, because in this world, information is power… and some people will do anything to control it.

Exploring the enduring pressure between the UK and Russia, Secret Service’s timely political take on the espionage genre guarantees to grip the nation.

So it was the husband after all. I might need to watch it again, I got lost off with what was happening

snowibunni · 05/05/2026 21:53

So husband defecting and presumably never seeing kids again is better than staying in UK and being tried for treason?

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/05/2026 21:57

I knew it

I was right !!!

It was so obvious he was the hotel tape man

And dodgy /tho didn’t expect him to be the main informer

She did the right thing , allowing him to escape - so guessing only the inner circle knew he was the spy /direct threat
Or else surely everyone would be trying to find /kill Stuart

Wonder what their kids were told about their dad ?

For a series I wasn’t sure about last week after e1 - glad I rewatched e1 as really enjoyed this series in the end

But Ryan's role? Was he just an easily led wide boy?

Think they are after series 2.

I normally do. I just thought I’d look during ads. And I was intrigued by you being quoted in the article so I scrolled through. 🙈

GenialHarrietGrouty · 05/05/2026 23:03

Isn't the death penalty theoretically still available for treason? I guess that definitely makes exile in Russia attractive.

NewspaperTaxis · 05/05/2026 23:17

What happens to her husband then - he just strolls through the border to Russia with all the cash he's got on him at the time?

Recklessismymiddlename · 06/05/2026 06:34

It was Rafe Spall, so bound to have been a prominent part. Gemma did say to Roger, she’d want to secure visiting rights, somewhere neutral.

Off to read that article now. Blondes 👏👏

It’s only one sentence. But my words

as soon as I read it I thought that me

My comment is quoted too about hubby not having a big enough role!

GrillaMilla · 06/05/2026 09:08

I don't know whether we should be flattered or miffed @Blondeshavemorefun

Well done sussing it though you were right.

I did really enjoy it, hope there's another series.

BeMintFatball · 06/05/2026 09:27

@Blondeshavemorefun I got quoted too. I’m not happy about it. I know we all post with fake names but makes me feel Mumsnet is not safe space.

Lazy rude journalism.

I often wonder if comedians/ script writers steal ideas and jokes from here, I'm sure they do

daffodilandtulip · 06/05/2026 15:14
