I remember getting our first remote when I was about 5 (born late 70s)

ButMyGoshDontYouJustKnowIt · 18/04/2026 18:56

I remember when we first got a telly with a remote- it was on a long cable and when we were burgled and they took the telly, they left the remote behind which gave us some pleasure!

At some point in the late 70s or possibly early 80s we got our first TV with a remote.

BikeShmike · 18/04/2026 18:57

What's a remote?
What's a telly?
What's a channel?

VividDeer · 18/04/2026 18:59

Remote that had a wire to tv. The pet rabbit chewed through it more than once!

Seeline · 18/04/2026 19:00

Didn't have a TV until I was 2.
It was black and white.
Had to get up to change between the 3 channels.

Born late 60's, but didn't have much money.

Uricon2 · 18/04/2026 19:00

Got up.

I remember my Dad being balanced on one leg behind the TV wielding the ariel above his head during the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special and Nan (born in the 19th century) saying "Oh that's a good picture [Dad] just stay there.

Also remember saying , jokingly, to my very much younger sister that we should put the TV on to 'warm up' and her complete incomprehension.

Ahwig · 18/04/2026 19:00

I was the remote in the 60’s and the Ariel adjuster 😀

ShanghaiDiva · 18/04/2026 19:01

up to change channel and tv was black and white. Happy days!

Cherrycola4 · 18/04/2026 19:02

No remote. We had a long piece of bamboo garden cane to reach the buttons. Remotes were invented at this point - we were just skint.

CottageGate · 18/04/2026 19:04

We had a black and white tv that you had to get up to choose one of the three channels. We rented the TV from Redifusion and occasionally the 'vertical hold' would go and the man from Redifusion would come to fix it.

TV ended at about midnight I think. The national anthem would play and that was your lot. Sometimes during the day there's be a lull in the programmes and the test card would come on.

We got a colour TV in the late 1970s.

Remote

A remote? Ha ha ha ha.
We only had three channels and remotes hadn't been invented.

Purplebunnie · 18/04/2026 19:05

Up to change and black and white until mid 70's when my gran bought my mother a colour TV

Malinia · 18/04/2026 19:06

We had it all: a TV which you had to get up to change channel on, and one with a remote attached to a lead.

TheBirdintheCave · 18/04/2026 19:06

Both! It depended on which room we were in.

DonewhatIcando · 18/04/2026 19:12

No remote, we had to get up and turn the TV over, sometimes we had to "tune" the channel in.
Also had an ariel on top of the telly and if the channel went funny / fuzzy someone would move ariel around until the picture was clear again while the rest of us shouted "there, yes there, dont move" 😂
I was born in 1966

Me too. I've still got it.

Pricelessadvice · 18/04/2026 19:15

No remote when I was very young. I used to be the channel changer!
I also remember we used to hit the top of the telly when the picture went funny.

user2848502016 · 18/04/2026 19:19

We had to get up to change it when I was very young but I do remember getting a remote control probably mid-late 80s

user2848502016 · 18/04/2026 19:20

I used to steal the batteries from the tv remote for my Walkman when I was a grumpy teen in the 90s 😂

SparklyGlitterballs · 18/04/2026 19:22

Had to get up to change channels, all three of them! It was a twisty knob too, no buttons on our first tv.

OwlsDontGoToSchool · 18/04/2026 19:23

We didn't have a remote before I was 18 definitely, I don't know when one was obtained after that. But we only had three channels, then four, so not much need. My cousins had one which attached to the TV with a curly wire.

RedRiverShore6 · 18/04/2026 19:24

We had 2 or 3 channels, I was about 6 or 7 when BBC 2 launched. No remote and I think we had to tune it in iirc

photodiva · 18/04/2026 19:25

Not only had to get up to change the channel, I had to wade through a shag pile carpet to do it! Kids today don’t know they’re born!

TroysMammy · 18/04/2026 19:28

Wasn't allowed to touch the tv and it didn't have a remote. We didn't have a colour tv until I was 12 or 13 - 19879/80 (landline phone aged 16). Deprived. As a result I don't bother with the tv and I don't have any favourite programmes I put life on hold for and I hate having conversations on the phone too.
