This looks fabulous!

My favourites Neil, Symon and Bruce are mentioned, Suzy and Charles return to the programme and tributes to the lovely Nick, Lynn and of course Michael Apted.

Andrew’s home is very nice

Rostio · 15/09/2026 22:12

Yes its 80-90% old takes with a scant minute or two of solo talking head at 70 with no mention of spouses/family for the most part. It seemed particularly odd covering Lynn and Nick without mentioning they are dead.

Yes, the editing is very odd, jumping about all over the place and leaving a lot of questions unanswered.

Wasn't expecting the rabbit murder 🐇💀 🐕

Rostio · 15/09/2026 22:13

I don’t want to be negative because I am so fond of the participants, but I am a bit disappointed.

Yes, I don't remember the rabbit murder by the dog 😧

SwedishEdith · 15/09/2026 22:16

I am glad about Michael Apted's questions though. Some sound quite brutal and blunt but I'm glad he asked them. Quite challenging.

20 years as partner in a golden circle firm buys a lot!

Very true

Apologies for the confusion about Nick

I read Nick’s footage is next week’s show and he recorded a piece for this when he was had not far from death. He died less than a week later.

2 out 14 dying is a similar proportion of people born in 1956 across the UK who are no longer with us.

Yes although more surprisingly it seems none of the 14 have been widowed at 70.

I just found it odd that they gave catch ups on Lynn and Nick without mentioning their deaths (especially Lynn who died before the last series). Fingers crossed for more actual updates next week if Nick’s interview is broadcast then.

Lalgarh · 15/09/2026 22:26

Is it only this one 90 minute episode or is there another episode next week

Lalgarh · 15/09/2026 22:27

Oh ok there is one.

I just realised the echoes of the way the montage shows them ageing is like the video for Hurt by Johnny Cash

FergussSingsTheBlues · 15/09/2026 22:28

I have to say… I expected more than this, a thirty second catch up is a bit shit. I can only assume that they’ve wised up and don’t want to even mention their children etc?

One more next week.

I completely understand your response. I thought it was a bit flat. I'm not reading all of these comments or saying more until I see the next one. And aren't there two 'extras', as well?

We have to remember that the 14 one wasn't considered that great at the time. The children were so resistant to the questions and what was all that right up to their faces filming about?

Auburngal · 15/09/2026 22:35

The only spouse I saw at 70 being interviewed was Tony’s wife, Debbie(?)

@C8H10N4O2 Jackie’s former partner- the father of her youngest two sons was knocked over and died of injuries just before 56 Up. It was the same week as her grandchild was born. That’s probably the nearest thing for them to be widowed

simpsonthecat · 15/09/2026 22:36

Well I loved it. I found it very poignant. I am of the same age, it meant a lot to me. I cannot wait to see next week

Hihosilver123 · 15/09/2026 22:37

Tony gets me every time! He was such a cheeky happy and he had incredible foresight. He said he wanted to be a jockey and he was and then a taxi driver, and he was. He seems to have had a good life, with a few mishaps. Him getting emotional about Michael at the end made me fill up!

agree, though, that I felt a bit cheated. I expected much more from them at 70. Maybe we’ll get more next week.

Definitely don’t remember the rabbit slaughter!

viques · 15/09/2026 22:40

I had a tear in my eye when Bruce read the poem from his father, and again when Simeon ( spelling?) talked about all the children he and his wife had fostered.

What did strike me was how the huge differences of expectation and ambition, of language, accent and lifestyle at the beginning of the series had moved closer together . Obviously not completely, but it did make me realise what a huge change there has been in British society since the seventies. Accents particularly have changed hugely, very regional accents remain, but there is a far more consistent middle of the road accent, and it was interesting to see how many of the 7 ups accents had changed.

BestIsWest · 15/09/2026 23:15

I’ve just cried over Bruce’s poem too. I think he’s my favourite. Lovely man.

RockinCara · 15/09/2026 23:25

My class were shown the 7 up and 14 up programmes when I was in junior school, and I’ve watched it ever since. I feel quite sad that this will be the end, but I thought this era has been glossed over, whipped through. It doesn’t feel enough. It would be nice if they all met up for another party at the end.

cauliflowercheesey · 15/09/2026 23:54

I think that of all of them, Neil shows the class divide the most. He is clearly a highly intelligent man, but that failure to get into Oxford seems like a ‘what if’ sliding doors moment. He probably had the brains, what if he had had the training of those private school boys? If he had made it in, how different his life might have been.

I met him when he worked at the school in Tower Hamlets. I took a bunch of kids to use what was regarded at the time as a state of the art computer suite. Funnily enough it was in the film tonight , it didn’t look quite as impressive today as it did back then! I didn’t realise who he was at the time but someone told me later.

I think there was more to this with Neil, he seemed utterly traumatised and very much sadder from age 14. Going through your entire life feeling lonely must be just devastating. I wonder how be was raised to be honest.

Happymchappyface · 16/09/2026 07:49

I was disappointed too. I wanted more updates and I wonder if that’s coming next week.

I binged all the other ones in preparation for this.
