This looks fabulous!

My favourites Neil, Symon and Bruce are mentioned, Suzy and Charles return to the programme and tributes to the lovely Nick, Lynn and of course Michael Apted.

"we have seen a glimpse of Britain's future"

Oh that got me

Gosh that was poignant. I loved the way sometimes you could still see the 7 year old in the 70 year old - with Jackie and Bruce particularly.

Apted's death meant that the last episode could become a reflection on the entire series and the very complex feelings the participants had about it, with much more of Apted's voice and often quite outrageous questions than the earlier episodes had shown. I don't think it's at all a concidence that the only one who refused to participate for the vast majority of it was a documentary TV producer himself - he knew too much about the tricks the production team were using.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 29/09/2026 07:33

interesting that before social media they were harshly judged by the tabloids - you can't really blame them for feeling misrepresented

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 29/09/2026 09:10

I watched 7 up the filming last night. It wasn’t very long. I could done with a longer show

I found it shocking that apted had said to zoom in on the 5 winners and the 15 losers. Very judgy. I wonder where they’d placed Nick?

Wonder if they’ll keep in touch

I have just caught up with all your above posts, for the last 10 days, as I've been away. I finished the 2nd 70 Up this morning. Thanks for all the insights and observations. So are the 2 extras - the interview with Jackie and the making of 7Up? I read that there were these bonus programmes but it did not list anything on ITVX further than the 2 main episodes.

They do feel like a part of us. I found it very difficult to watch Nick but if he felt it was important to share with us ... then it was important. A very switched on man - and it was there to witness at 6!

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/09/2026 13:13

The 'making of' programme is listed separately on itvx.

This is 70 UP The Victorians. It was filmed in 1964 (of 70 year olds who were born in Victorian times). It was first shown in 1965, the 2nd ever broadcasting of the episode was last week. It has been coloured as it was filmed in black and white. It was fascinating that many worried about old age being in the workhouse. Luckily these were abolished... but only in 1948 (16 years before).

Thank you!

I've just had the chance to watch the final two as was away on holiday . I'm glad Jackie is happy in her retirement now. My favourites are Paul - such a sweet man , Bruce - so happy he had his family -,and John - his background is so interesting - and of course Tony. I'm the same age and this is the thing you realise it's all about family and people. Our society has changed so much in these years but there is no doubt that all of them were a marvel despite their backgrounds.

I just watched the extra short film 7Up The Story on ITVX - it was a worthwhile goodbye.

loosingjammer · 13/10/2026 00:32

Ok that's next. Thanks!

Hundslappadrifa · 13/10/2026 21:47

Well, that was emotional!! Think I cried all the way through it.

I actually thought that was better than the two programmes.

Likewise. Once my parents go, it’s just me. I have relatives but they are older than my parents (their cousins) and don’t have contact with others as fallen out. All because of family not doing much when others died.

My parents are 76 and 78.

I'm in a similar situation due to (invisible) disability. It's very difficult although I have a partner and he has family. I think more and more people will be in this situation sadly. It's amazing to see the lifestyle some of them had in relatively working class jobs (Paul in Australia didn't go to uni but seemed to end up with a lovely house and a lovely family and a comfortable life - I was delighted for him as he seemed lovely and hard working and just an all round good person who made a good choice of partner and was a good dad. He deserved it but how many people would have that now).

Just watched this. I'm the same age as these people. This is the one that made me cry. Seeing the eras pass and the little shots of Britain. 😢
