This looks fabulous!

My favourites Neil, Symon and Bruce are mentioned, Suzy and Charles return to the programme and tributes to the lovely Nick, Lynn and of course Michael Apted.

Although of course we only see what the programme makers want us to see. Quite possible that others also complained.

Yes, agree, as always we see what we are being shown and what suited the narrative I think it was John who from 28 (?) refused to be interviewed by MA but we didn't see any of that.

Maybe, but I didn't get that impression. The three women seemed much more able to fight back and express themselves at 21 and more reconciled to the whole experience at 70 but the 'sofa three' seemed to be talking from a script at 21 and complained more later.

Edit: I think they were misrepresented, by the way, but I couldn't see how much until 63 up and 70 up.

I loved it! 🥰 emotional at the end

Aslockton · 23/09/2026 18:31

I was touched by Tony picking up other participants in his cab over the years. These interactions away from the camera have stayed with him - from where he went for tea, how he spotted Neil's distinct walk and how much John paid him!

At the end of the day, these are normal people who have been part of an extraordinary piece of television history. I loved the final episode, especially how fond they were of the documentary and Michael Apted. For Nick to be filmed so close to his passing, it was obviously enormously important to him and his family to be part of the end.

Looking forward to 7.30pm tonight.

That was a really good wrap up programme. I wonder if they have a WhatsApp group 😄

Aslockton · 23/09/2026 19:58

I said exactly the same to my DH about a Whatsapp group!!

SwedishEdith · 23/09/2026 19:59

Tony's cheeky face when they're at the zoo. But I will always well up at "my heart's desire is to see my daddy".

Edited

From what they said in later episodes it was more exaggerating their assigned roles rather than really misrepresenting. And as you say - the three girls were quite able to challenge back as was Tony (and Peter when I think about it). Also interesting that Apted was the closest in background to the prep school boys, perhaps he was immune to the self-confidence and their expectations not to be challenged - they seemed to struggle with that.

I think it was a fair point made by the researcher - after the first few episodes it was a documentary about people through their lives and became less about the original remit. I was also interested to hear her talk about tracking down the participants before electronic records and online comms - I've always marvelled at their success in this.

I would have liked a little bit of a round up of their families (in general terms) especially as some appeared in earlier episodes. I don't think we know if John and Clare even had a family. I'd be interested to hear their experiences of grandparenting where they have reached that point or how Suzy's boy with learning difficulties had fared (again in general terms) and what they think is different for children of their backgrounds now and then.

I've also wondered if they keep in touch within the group. We know that Suzy and Nick formed a friendship and were in regular contact and for a period Neil was supported by Bruce but I don't think they have really talked about the others. It does seem a natural WhatsApp group.

Selfishly I would love to see how they get on in the next years but agree its best to call it a day at 70 - I can't imaging any of them would much enjoy being in a "last man standing" game.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2026 20:17

I wouldn't have liked Suzy in her earlier iterations (I'm a year older) as we were worlds apart but I think I would actually get on with her as a mature woman.

Rostio · 23/09/2026 20:21

Just caught up with the second episode. Much better than the first. I'm surprised they had the same team behind them.

Suzy grew on me as well. I was struck how she talked about her choices with respect to family - her desire to be at home and keep the children at home (rather than boarding) due to her own experiences. It was quite a contrast with Andrew's wife's snarky comments about "career women".

A lot of them were a bit crass at 14 and 21 - I'd always give them a pass on that if they turned into decent adults. Most of us are very annoying at those ages!

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2026 20:29

Nick referred to his 14 year old self as the boy with his head between his knees 🤣. He looked like he was trying to disappear

Rostio · 23/09/2026 20:32

I'm struck by how many of them are grateful for a life well-lived. I don't feel I'm living my life well at all.

Loved seeing Nick, he has the accent I grew up with and never lost it.

I hope that at least one of the others reaches out to Neil if they watched the second episode and hearing him say he sometimes feels lonely.

ObvsOctober · 23/09/2026 20:47

I would love it if someone has kept all the edits and in the future, made a programme out of these. What a fab project it would be to see the bits that hadn’t been broadcasted at the time - clips that might tell an altogether different narrative to the one we’ve watched.

It’s been mentioned further up the thread. There is a lot of unseen footage but ITV aren’t interested.

I reckon they’ve learned to keep well alone. By his own account he’s quite a tricky fellow to be around.

Jackie mentioned filming something with Sue and their drama teacher for 14. Afterwards the drama teacher said it would not be in the tv show. Lynn went to a different school.

In those days it might have been wiped

OneoftheWeddingPeople · 23/09/2026 23:34

Very moving. Interesting how the original premise was class but by the end the humanity shone through and the class aspect seemed quite meaningless.

John was the biggest change imo ended up such a kind thoughtful man. So sad about Neil such a sweet little boy.

Aslockton · 24/09/2026 06:57

This is a really interesting Q and A with the new director, producer and Jackie before she watched the final episodes.

The director explained he wanted to take it back to the children in the final episode, not their families, just like how it started. They explained how they got Charles back on board and about unseen footage. There is no unseen footage from 7 up, but quite a bit from the other episodes of varying quality due to lenses and film format used. Some does not have audio with it.

It was very interesting how the director mapped out how to film the final episodes. He was the director of the films Senna and Amy, but had only done one piece for TV before this.

I've only just found time to watch the second episode. I agree with those saying it was much better than the first. Really well structured this time round, and really moving.
I'm not a crier, but over those last few minutes I was joining in with each of them.

franke · 26/09/2026 20:31

Oof, I just watched the final episode and felt very emotional. I look at it through a different lens to when I first watched 28up. Those sweet boys from the children's home, the posh kids completely stitched up by Apted and the three girls standing up for themselves. I do wonder what happened to Neil between 7 and 14 that set his life trajectory. And dear Nick and Bruce. It's an extraordinary achievement.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/09/2026 03:28

there was another programme but i cant find it - anyone know what it was called
