This looks fabulous!

My favourites Neil, Symon and Bruce are mentioned, Suzy and Charles return to the programme and tributes to the lovely Nick, Lynn and of course Michael Apted.

I'll have to watch that.

A couple of the women were still wearing their Victorian clothing and bonnets

Maia77 · 22/09/2026 20:31

They were all emotional in the end and I got emotional too. All decent people, but my favourities were Nick and Sue - kind, wise, well-adjusted. I also have a soft spot for Neil and Bruce who are generous, articulate, honest, empathetic, kind.

hihelenhi · 22/09/2026 20:40

I've also watched Ep 2 now: definitely needed the tissues.

There WAS a quite a bit of old footage, but not as much as the first ep. A lot of it we hadn't actually seen before, which I found really interesting, as it told a slightly different story than the one Apted told us, I felt. (Just be warned the first five minutes is exactly the same as in Episode 1 though, in case you think, 'huh? I've already seen this one.')

It's not done in the same format as the old episodes, but I think it does cover the ground well and asks questions about the whole process. I thought it worked really well. No doubt some will still complain though.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/09/2026 20:44

it was Paul that got me feeling emotional

topcat2026 · 22/09/2026 20:54

The last ten minutes in which some of them talked about the whole process was very interesting. But this series as a whole….much too short and therefore not as satisfying as it could have been.

I was wondering if a condition to Peter’s involvement this time was that his band and book had to be not too subtly plugged.

LethargeMarg · 22/09/2026 21:13

when peter came back in (i think) 56 up he was v open about coming back mainly for the band.
He apparently got dragged in rhe Murdoch press after 28up when he slagged off the Thatcher government, ended up quitting teaching but became a solicitor I think. Then refused to be in the next few.
Always found him v relatable - honest about being unmotivated and not arsed about his career! Just like me in my 20s before responsibilities hit.

I think there was one called "90s girls", featuring ladies who were young in the 1890s. Can't find it from googling

I'm liking Jackie not taking shit from Michael Apted

He's got a lovely voice

sorryIdidntmeanto · 22/09/2026 22:17

Peter looks great, and so active. John came across brilliantly. What a kind man.

Hihosilver123 · 22/09/2026 22:39

How come some people watched it earlier than the scheduled time?

Auburngal · 22/09/2026 22:41

That was emotional. Especially seeing Nick 3 days before he died. He died 3 years ago.

Is it just me or that John looks like Craig Revel Horwood? Suzy reminds me of someone who the name escapes me

Hihosilver123 · 22/09/2026 22:41

I loved the second episode, and thought it tied it up well. Some unseen footage and a chance for them to look back on the project and how it was for them. Amazing that Nick survived to 70 and died days later. Almost like he’d completed it and was ready to go. Thought the episode was moving and very touching.

Agree with all of this.

No Nick’s died aged 65 in July 2023. He was the youngest of the group. He was born October 1957 when the others were born 1956. I remember seeing something about John’s legal work with his DOB as May 1956. Some of the filming of the most up to date was done Nov last year.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 22/09/2026 22:55

It was supposed to be over when Michael Apted died, but Nick asked to do a last interview when he was dying, so they saved that and made one more set, 70, which came out 3 years after Nick's interview. The other interviews are more recent. That's what I read.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 22/09/2026 23:02

I wrote this on another thread a few weeks ago... when I had rewatched the first few series in readiness. I really enjoyed it all in the end but obviously saw how Jackie and John felt

sorryIdidntmeanto · 31/08/2026 05:18
I have started rewatching them with my dc ahead of 70up. It is a really uncomfortable watch now. I remember enjoying them as a child, but not so, now.
The children in the programme themselves are quite perceptive, but the interviewer and the production are obviously so outdated.
It is not representative as a huge % of those chosen go to university, or even Oxbridge. The questions are terrible, making the children in the series so uncomfortable. There is such a lot of stereotyping. The interviewing style is bizarre, with so many leading questions. Even how they choose to present the kids - chanting Latin and asking about which papers they read they read to the public school boys, against asking the boys from the children's home about fighting etc.
I've got to 21, not sure how much more I can stomach!

Ahh I see
so Nick was 67?

7 up the story tomorrow.

o tho they all looked sad as if they realise that’s it. Not the show but life. Sorry

luceygoosey · 22/09/2026 23:03

I think that Suzy really resembles Jenny Agutter, if that’s who you’re thinking of too?
