This looks fabulous!

My favourites Neil, Symon and Bruce are mentioned, Suzy and Charles return to the programme and tributes to the lovely Nick, Lynn and of course Michael Apted.

I’m a 60s baby and knew girls (it was always girls) who took professional librarian qualifications on the job, starting work in the library service at 18. I think it was one of many jobs where qualifications were taken in work.

I think “choice” is an interesting word - we don’t make choices in a vacuum. Expectations and family finances both featured heavily in education after 11. Sue’s comments suggested a lack of confidence, going for the “safer” option of one of the new comprehensives. Her later achievements suggest that like Lynn, she could have done much more academically if given different expectations at primary age. I’m younger that these children and I certainly remember friends being deterred from grammar due to the hidden costs for their families, by being girls (so a waste of time spending time and money on qualifications) or minorities (obviously not university types).

None of the private school children or even middle class Neil had any doubts as to where they would fit in - they made choices to go to university or not. This is why schools having high expectations of all children matters so much. If the highest expectation of a child is “a job in the post office counters with a pension” then they are unlikely to do more.

Absolutely. Class expectations and confidence about options (even if they might technically be open to you) are intertwined, imo. Just look at Symon. That's the biggest difference I see between those from "posher" and working class backgrounds - I mean, in my own life & family as well as on the programme.

Just remembering what Nick said at one point as well, that there were people who had actually said to him "I didn't expect someone with your background/accent to be intelligent", something awful like that. Glad he wasn't ever held back.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/09/2026 14:14

some of the questions were terrible.
asking Tony if he was worried he might become a villain?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/09/2026 14:15

Nick was great, saying I dont want to answer questions like that, as a 7 year old,
good yorkshire lad.

Rostio · 19/09/2026 14:43

I think Nick must have had a great set of parents and probably grandparents behind him. What an amazing life he lived.

In this day and age it'd be so easy for someone to use the footage (and film new footage) and put something out on YouTube. Someone somewhere must be holding on to the reins quite tightly to prevent this.

I think Nick was probably the most intelligent out of all them i think he won a scholership to boarding school ?
He didnt have the early advantages that John ,Andrew and charles had
And had a remarkable career

He was even younger, he was only six! So funny and clever. That comment about holidays in the country and town as well. I mean, definitely not sure how many of us aged 6 would say something like "I'd change it into a diamond" when asked how we'd change the world!

I was surprised and pleased his father was still alive for so many of them. Hard life for his father. A vanishing lifestyle.

LlynTegid · 19/09/2026 15:23

Saw it earlier today on catch up, don't think I saw any since 49up. Very emotional.

She got married at 19
She hadent had her first child at 21 up
Both her and Jackie were married but childless at that age by 28 up she had two daughters a toddler and a baby
I binged them all over the past couple of weeks

One of Lynn’s daughters had her first child aged 19. That’s where the confusion lies.

Her daughters were born between 21 and 28. 28 Up was broadcast in 1984. Youngest was a very young baby. They are probably 45/46 and 42 now.

He was the youngest of the 14. He was always a year younger than the age of series. So 27 in 28
Up etc

I've not read the thread as I don't want to read any spoilers. I started watching this from the start last week and I'm up to 42UP.

Im finding it fascinating but the constant repeating of old footage does get a bit annoying. I don't mind a bit of a re-cap but they repeat whole sections of footage, don't think there's any need for it other than to pad out the episode.

it's because when they aired, it was 7 years since viewers had seen the last one. Streaming and binging was not a thing, viewers needed the reminders!

topcat2026 · 20/09/2026 10:42

I get why they have to repeat old footage, but there was too much in it on the first episode.

I watched the 50 minute collection of Neil’s contributions from 7 to 49 on YouTube that was mentioned the other day and refreshed my memories of what he’s said. I welled up re-watching the part where we see Neil hitchhiking. I’m so glad Bruce reached out to him after he saw 35 Up and put Neil up in his home in London, which gave Neil the opportunity to be a councillor and improve his health. I wonder if that friendship is still going and will be touched on in Tuesday’s episode.

BG2015 · 20/09/2026 12:47

I totally understand that they need to do some re-caps after each 7 years but I don't think they need to showing ALL of the same footage. If people are watching 49up they've probably been pretty invested in the programme from the start so don't need this unnecessary repeated footage.

Bear in mind that the people who watched it as it came out would have had a 7 year gap between series and might have needed the recap.

Agree i think people are judging from a 2026 perspective. When all other updates were broadcast there weren't any on line catch ups available so they had to do a recap. Also the only recap I could find were "bootleg" versions on YouTube so not from the creators.
The parents signed up their kids at a time when very few had tvs so it looked to be a relatively unintrusive check in on their kids every 7 years. Wonder if the parents of the kids had known how accessible the footage of their kids lives would become would they gave signed them up. I wouldnt!

Yes
I binged it so have found the recaps very repatative but had i watched it as originally intended i can understand some people would need reminding .

Auburngal · 20/09/2026 16:30

They might have repeated the older Up series back in the day at 3am on ITV. For those eagle eyes looking at the tv guide recording it on video

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/09/2026 16:39

I don't think anyone had video recorders in 1963 and TV finished with The Epilogue at about 11.30. It was much the same in 1970, not many people even had colour TV.

i Was talking 80s-10s

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/09/2026 17:42

there were extra bits added in with the repeats but it does get a bit much.
not recommended to binge

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/09/2026 22:32

I love this show.
Neil breaks my heart every time.

Ah I forgot about this

Theres such a sadness in this programme.

i watched all of these as repeated in the 2000s I think they showed each 7 up in full. And that was I was addicted.

The subsequent shows have all been shortened versions.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/09/2026 22:55

This Sunday episode is from last Tuesday then

I missed half of it. Just watched Neil now Bruce.

The only socialist in the village.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/09/2026 06:28

i was watching 28 up and wondering If they should have filmed Niel
would they film him as he was then now?
