The next series starts on the 21st April. Looking forward to banquettes, and bizarre paint choices, and upcycling of old junk. DD and I are rewatching the old series and I’d forgotten how crazy some of the rooms were!

What a poor set of contestants … really lazy casting.

Emmerley seems to be the only one listening, but even her spaces are touch and go.

I hope Next have some talented designers, who will make sure that any collection is fit to go into peoples houses.

I agree with you.
I think better designers were let go in the earlier episodes. 🙄
They just don’t listen to the brief.
They haven’t grasped that the end user is more important than their daft squiggles, horribly loud wall paper interior design decisions.

elgreco · Yesterday 08:28

Their outfits at judging! Seriously?

Villanousvillans · Yesterday 08:38

Those squiggles are ridiculous. When is she going to realise that she’s got it wrong?

As for that wallpaper and the horrible pampas grass! What planet are these people on?

I wonder what the brief is. Are they told to come in 'fancy' dress?

Watching last night i was surprised when Michelle said 'my designers arent grasping it' (or words to that effect.)

Her designers? She doesn't appear to be teaching them design. Or consistency. Or anything helpful. Maybe it would work better if they actually took novices and taught them. Or found real designers who are goid This random half way house isn't working.

I hope Emmerly wins, she’s the only one who seems to be listening and improving. The others just seem to churn out a slightly different version of their usual schtick each week.

Same here. I like her self deprecating humour. For an artist, she doesn't take herself seriously. I'm glad she used a little bit of her paper marrrshaaay again. I quite liked her coffee table. 90s vibes there.

I didn't think Ajeets was bad enough to go, but I think over the top zoning was why we lost the other two a couple of weeks back, so maybe that frustrated Michelle a bit. Duran's looked OK, but I think the bigger design errors came from her and Sophie. I'm a bit baffled with the outcome.

I think Sophie will be a bit of a John and might win it. I think NEXT have already earmarked her to win and want a bit of rock and roll style in their collection, but I haven't really seen much of that from her recently. She's lost confidence, and that brown really wasn't pleasant.

Duran needs to do more than add slug trails to the ceiling. She is worse than the others as she omits things from her designs, rather than goes OTT. Not thinking of things people need, is worse than thinking too much about it. She has painted ceilings for weeks now and not really done a huge amount else, although I did quite like her flat generally.

Michelle getting frustrated was funny, because if you were actually consistent each week and judged the look of the space rather than just the ideas, you'd get better results. They are not getting it because the goal posts move. I think the guest judging doesn't work. You need two permanent judges. How can a guest judge come in and judge without seeing previous projects and the progress they made and if they have listened.

I missed the briefing but I was surprised that no one addressed the lack of storage in the rooms. They seemed more concerned about table and chairs - one room had a table with 4 chairs!
I saw there was a wardrobe but where are people meant to keep all their other belongings?

I don’t think Ajeet should have gone last night. His zoning was overdone and too much for the space but on the whole, his spaces are vaguely for normal people.

Duran and Sophie are both still making spaces they want rather than following the brief which I presume was the reason for Michelle’s barb about designers not listening. I thought Sophie’s poo brown mish mash was awful and Duran really needs to lose the bloody squiggle - its not an edgy signature, its tedious and repetitive. Neither of them seemed to understand that the brief was about selling the bedsits to future renters, not trotting out their repeating cliches.

I agree Emmerly is the contestant most willing to listen and learn. She has even ditched the papier mache. It was by far the most coherent space.

I can see why Lia would be kept in - her maximalist style (and the endless dried weeds) isn’t my cup of tea but she has developed and her military mess was certainly the most homely and on brief of the spaces.

What is this thing with painting ceilings horrible dark colours?

It’s a small space - it’s going to make it feel even smaller.

I think its a millennial fashion with brown being more gen Z. One of my DC has a bottle green (with a fancy name) ceiling in one room, several of their friends have similar.

I find the words “interesting” and “unusual” useful in such situations 😅

Seaside3 · Yesterday 12:35

I think painting the 'fifth wall' is meant to feel cosy. However, no one is moving into those flats for cosy.

Halsall · Yesterday 14:52

I’m coming round to Emmerley too - she’s definitely learning, unlike Duran Duran the others.

But generally speaking, it’s increasingly making Banjo look like an absolute genius of interior design.

Duran’s looks as though a 3 year old has scribbled on the walls 😳

I think it looked as though she has drawn around the top of the units giving a shadow effect which I quite liked. But the wall scribbles are dire.

I think turning the bed round was a genius move by Emmerley, though I did wonder about hoe they were going to deal with bedside lamps, it was pretty clear the beds didn’t fit properly in the alcove.

It's definitely highlighting that there's a lot more to interior design than picking trends off Instagram.

Tbf to banjo, he is a talented designer and that's why he's gone on to make shows etc. It's fairly rare to get someone with that kind of eye.

NeedWineNow · Yesterday 18:50

I don't think this year's bunch are particularly inspiring and agree that Emmerley seems to be the only one who is taking feedback on board. Thankfully she's toned down the papier mache stuff (I thought she was going to be a one trick pony at the start) and I thought her studio was really good. DH said this week's task would have been right up Johnnie's street.

As for the others, I thought Duran should have gone. I am so fed up with her squiggles and she doesn't seem to take criticism well. She looked like a spoilt child on the sofa this week.

I suspect the ultimate winner will be Sophie.

WonderfulSmith · Yesterday 19:08

I think one of the big differences this year is how young everyone is. Usually there are some older people which adds a different edge to it.

Chrysanthemum5 · Yesterday 21:56

I did wonder how people would get in the wardrobes if the bed were turned round. Really it just wasn’t a practical space
