Previously led by the likes of Sheridan Smith and Kara Tointon (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-teacher-season-2-air-date-newsupdate/), it looks as though 5's The Teacher (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-teacher-season-2-ending-explained-newsupdate/) is not only returning for a third season but will also feature a brand new lead.

Known for her roles in Doctor Foster, COBRA and The Crown (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-crown-season-7-explained/), it has now been confirmed that Victoria Hamilton will be taking up the helm of The Teacher season 3 as respected drama teacher Helen.

According to her character synopsis, Helen is "struggling to keep up with modern social expectations in a reputable private school".

It continues: "Recently promoted to Head of Drama, Helen finds herself being challenged by outspoken pupil Cressida when she stumbles over student Dee's correct pronouns and insists that her class study Shakespeare as opposed to more modern progressive works.

A sinister grudge match quickly develops between teacher and pupil and, when Dee commits suicide following an argument with Helen, Cressida resorts to blackmail to make Helen pay for her 'outdated' views.

"As the war intensifies and her world comes crashing down around her, Helen must fight to hold on to both her family and her career before she loses everything."

For those familiar with Hamilton's most recent role in ITV's Unforgotten (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/unforgotten-cast-itv/), the character of Helen is not too dissimilar to the role she played as history lecturer and faculty head Juliet Cooper.

While there is, of course, no link to the two roles, Hamilton's role in Unforgotten saw her character similarly get into trouble with the student body after using derogatory language and was suspended from her role at a central London university.

The original series of The Teacher saw Sheridan Smith's protagonist teacher accused of sleeping with one of her students after a night out, with the second season focusing on Kara Tointon's Dani Osborne embroiled in a murder conspiracy which didn't only threaten her job as an art teacher, but also her marriage.

As of now, further casting is set to be announced, but something tells us that Hamilton will slot in nicely to the thriller, which is sure to pack in the twists and turns.

Many will likely recognise Hamilton for her role as neighbour Anna Baker in Doctor Foster, a role she reprised in BBC series Life which aired in 2020.

She has also more recently starred in the likes of Deep State and COBRA, having also had roles in Lark Rise to Candleford, The Time of Your Life and Babyfather.

Tho holding DEE’s face saying come on ist going to do anything

what happened to cpr

Ha I was thinking the same thing- surely they are trained? We’ve just had tons of new guidance on sleeping babies and I was like, surely they have to watch them too, don’t they have this guidance?! 🤣

Yeah so much for first aid training kicking in. The holding of the face was absolutely farcical.

I also got confused with Unforgotten as Victoria Hamilton played exactly the same character.

I'm thinking that even Cressida and Leo are being played. Having Leo in her house will also be part of the evidence against Helen. I wonder if Leo is genuine or if he's been told to befriend Sam. In the first two series the teachers were set up weren't they so Helen must be being set up to cover up an even bigger crime/incident.

purpleme12 · 30/03/2026 23:10

Wow well both of the main characters are REALLY unlikeable

Good point. There were a lot of “do you know who my dad is” type comments so maybe something dodgy going on.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 25/03/2026 16:40

Thank you for that explanation. I was convinced that i had seen this series before but it was unforgotten that i had watched.

Yes! I was really confused at first thinking how is this a brand new series, I’ve seen this exact thing before, thought it was strong deja vu

Gloriia · 31/03/2026 07:16

Hamilton seems a very capable actress, you'd just think that when the script had her screaming in detention that 'they may as well kill themselves' then one of thrm did that she might have challenged it and suggested she something more subtle.

She deserves everything coming to her really and needs to access an anger management course for starters!

Her poor son, thinking he'd made some headway with friendships Sad

BreakfastOfWaffles · 31/03/2026 08:34

Joining, not watched it yet, will catch up soon.

Absolutely, in what world would any teacher shout something like this when explaining adult life? I know there are some dreadful teachers around but that is completely unhinged, making it every so unrealistic and a ridiculous line on which to base the story.
presumably it will be na inspector calls, Eva smith type story as the episodes unfold

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2026 10:06

I hope Leo likes her son not as he is being made to

tho now DEE is dead and Leo Dee close not sure what will happen to his friendship

Oh my God, the Cressida Bancroft character is insufferable. But Helen is treating the students like adults, more like a uni setting than a secondary school, I don't think a teacher would lose it like that. She's meant to have 30 years' teaching experience so none of this would be new.

I’m so glad you’ve posted this as I read the synopsis of this on my planner and was convinced I’d seen it before! Obviously it’s new so I hadn’t but this explains it

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2026 17:11

I think she was a rubbish teacher in unforgotten as well

good thing she’s an actress not a teacher 😉

There's some sort of drugs issue isn't there. That teacher with Leo (Peter Ash) is definitely involved. I wonder if Leo supplied the drugs or the teacher did.

To be honest I switched off after this scene, and having been made aware from this thread that Dee dies I'm not going to continue watching. It feels totally unreal

PrincessScarlett · 31/03/2026 21:25

This is ridiculous that Helen is allowing herself to be blackmailed by a student. She should have told the police officer about the video.

Exactly. She must have years of experience because she is promoted to Head of Drama and yet seems astonished that teenagers can be self-absorbed and over emotional. Which no drama teacher has ever witnessed or handled ever.

And she is a dreadful teacher. She should be discussing Shakespeare with them and discussing Cressida's ideas not shutting everyone down.

But the way she screamed at Dee made me decide not to continue to watch. because she is such a monster, so utterly in the wrong that her views can just be dismissed. It would be so much more interesting if she were a gentle and accommodating woman who decided on this issue she was just going to be politely honest, and that turned her life into sheer hell. Give both sides really powerful arguments and you'd have a great drama. But no, it has to tick all the boxes of drugs, suicide, bullying.

Fatfreefatball · 31/03/2026 21:31

Almost unwatchable due to the ridiculous 'woke' virtue signalling, non binary stuff, Cancelling Shakespeare etc. Helen was 100% correct in what she said but she shouldn't have said it.. No wonder kids get mental illness.

PrincessScarlett · 31/03/2026 21:39

So Leo is dealing drugs for Mr Blake?

PrincessScarlett · 31/03/2026 21:50

Well that's going to go down well having ex husband threatening a student 🙄

Tonissister · 31/03/2026 21:55

I place bets on someone slipping drugs into her son's bag and blaming him for it.

Not watched Ep2. Maybe that has already happened.

PrincessScarlett · 31/03/2026 21:56

Cressida is such a bitch doing that in the memorial 😱

tho would C have played the video regardless of being threatened
