Seemingly unremarkable and often overlooked, Mary Bennet longs to win her family’s approval.

Is this going to be a spoof or some sort of spin off ?

2nd episode tonight at 8:30

Couldn't see a thread so hope this isn't a duplicate!

Rosamund Pike's partner is 18 years older than she is, not Mr. Bingley, but in real life.

Is that creepy?

She's nearly 50, so not currently creepy, but depends on when they got together....not that they care what MN thinks 🙃

I like the series so far, just annoying that I can't continue binging for now. I also liked the book, but read it a long time ago, so can't really remember many of the details.

Jane Austin was writing a book at her death that had a wealthy woman of colour, Miss Lambe, as a main character (Sanditon). So I don't think it is wildly unrealistic that they cast two people of colour in the show. Given that we produce a lot of historical dramas in UK, it would be a shame to only have people of colour playing the slave or servant trope.

This is hilarious 😂

https://theconversation.com/jane-austens-real-and-literary-worlds-werent-exclusively-white-just-read-her-last-book-sanditon-264813 this is a really interesting article about Miss Lambe.

Jane Austen’s real and literary worlds weren’t exclusively white – just read her last book, Sanditon

While her inclusion of Miss Lambe, a Black character, is great, we should be wary of seeing it as representative of Austen having ‘radical politics’

I think that although there were some high profile people of African descent, eg as shown in the film Belle based on a true story, in the UK, in reallity they were as few as 2% of the population in the early 1900s and increased to 3% at the end.

But on the other hand far more likely to be living in London.

But maybe likely if the family she was staying with was a bit Bohemian (or whatever term would have been used at that time) they would have been part of this social circle.

Also the Gardiners are supposed to be “trade”. Wealthy but not gentlemen/nobility.

There would have been many more ethnically diverse members of the trading classes than nobility.

zurigo · 27/03/2026 09:22

in the UK, in reality they were as few as 2% of the population in the early 1900s and increased to 3% at the end.

But this series isn't set in the early 1900s and it's the early 1800s and at that the non-white population was <1%.

Sorry my typo. I did say I was talking about the 19th century. ie 1800-1899.

And that is the period the stats relate to. So ...

Didn't add in earlier posts but also at that time there were many high profile performers in music, theatre, etc..

The other episodes are available today.

im really interested to see how Mary experiences family members differently to Lizzie - how differently her mum parents her, her interactions with Mr Collins etc.

much like real life

MyOtherProfile · 29/03/2026 11:24

Ooh thanks for the reminder @fullfatt

RoseField1 · 29/03/2026 13:32

Watched the first of the next clutch of episodes today. I do like the way they have drawn the characters of Mary and Mrs Bennett and even Mr Collins but they aren't exactly true to the book characters! I am enjoying it though. I don't think Mary would have considered Mr Ryder's proposal for a second. She would have been insulted.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 29/03/2026 14:40

So delighted to see the next five episodes up! Will keep me company after exhausting all available episodes of The Pitt.

(Weather’s too miserable to walk to the cinema!)

I agree, he would not have made such a proposal to the sister in law of Mr Darcy in Pemberley, I wondered if they were going to show Mr Darcy kicking him out after Lizzie told him!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 29/03/2026 14:47

anyone interested in the book about Mrs Collins?
it is quite expensive currently

Ah, up already. It's definitely too cold to go gardening so maybe I'll take one in before teatime. Goodo.

Just binged the final 5 whilst feeling sorry for myself as I am ill. Loved it, won’t give away any spoilers just yet 😬

MrsLargeEmbodied · 29/03/2026 17:14

Also binging

HarryVanderspeigle · 29/03/2026 18:55

I'm happy with how that all turned out. I love how she flourished when allowed to be herself.

71Alex · 29/03/2026 19:36

Binged it too, very sweet

Mildorado · 29/03/2026 19:36

I'm really enjoying it. I think the lead plays the part well. I love it when she goes to live with the Gardiners because then she begins to live her life. It wasn't a choice between marriage and misery. I loved her enjoying the dance, and the quiz night, that was a lot of fun!

Mildorado · 29/03/2026 19:38

I did wonder about the casting of non white performers, particularly Mr Sparrow and Miss Baxter. I know there were poc in Regency England, though.

Cheguevarahamster · 29/03/2026 20:26

Just binged the last 5 episodes. Absolutely loved it. Particularly liked the different portrayal of characters such as Mr Collins (who was hilarious and touching) and Miss Bingley. Great Sunday afternoon viewing.

suburburban · 29/03/2026 20:30

Wish Mary would tell miss Bingley to do one
