I hope it is sensitive to the problems experienced by these children.

SlartyBartFast · 16/06/2008 21:06

she does look (imo) amazingly healthy for someone eating only wotsits and chocolate.

this is going to be interesting

Scuff · 16/06/2008 21:09

I'm assuming you have limited experience of dealing with a child with food phobia, Mutt?

Me too - I'm reserving judgement.

Yurtgirl · 16/06/2008 21:09

My dd's diet isnt great but I think this program is going to make me feel better tbh!

The narrater is getting on my nerves though....

turtle23 · 16/06/2008 21:09

OH MY GOD. Get a backbone and make them eat FOOD. This will make me very angry....

Love2bake · 16/06/2008 21:10

Do they have food phobia's or are they just fussy?

brimfull · 16/06/2008 21:10

her parents seem amazinlgy calm about it

must be a farkin nightmare

falcon · 16/06/2008 21:10

Forcing them to eat will only be counterproductive, these children aren't just picky eaters, they seem to have a genuine food phobia.

My question is...if she has been eating chocolate since toddlerhood why aren't they guilty of abuse for not getting help earlier? Sorry, but feeding your child is a priority. If she was starving herself they'd be locked up by now.

Love2bake · 16/06/2008 21:12

I wonder what the school thinks of the girls lunchbox?

Please don't be so judgemental. You really have to have been there to understand.

AitchTwoCiao · 16/06/2008 21:14

i think the girl's parents have sought help before, but if they've got the 'usual tricks' help of making silly arse faces out of food then that's not going to have helped.

turtle23 · 16/06/2008 21:15

The one who food makes sick...ok...but have been a nanny for yewars and have turned around several "cant eat" kids..9 times out of 10 it's not the kids with the problem (runs for cover)

turtle23 · 16/06/2008 21:15

years, even

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/06/2008 21:15

Chocolate melts in the mouth, mild tasting - it involves little swallowing. If your child has oral aversion/phobia it is something that is relatively easy to eat.

ds1 ate less than 10 different items of food for about 4 years. No meat, no fish, no fruit, no veg. He's severely autistic and a diet as restricted as his is not uncommon in children with autism.

He eventually did get eating again but it took over a year of his teacher spending every lunch time. He started by giving him a crisp with a tiny piece of baked bean sauce on it. When he was eating that he moved onto one baked bean between a broken crisp, then onto one baked bean with a tiny bit of mashed potato - and so on. Now he eats reasonably well (and doesn't like chocolate at all although it was one of the less than 10 items for a long time).

There is a specialist feeding clinic at GOSH for children with severe food restrictions. It is incredibly difficult to get a referral there are waiting lists are huge.

If a child won't eat then 'they won't go hungry' just doesn't work. If ds1 was not offered food he would eat then he wouldn't eat all day- he would then start producing ketones -which seemed to trigger a migraine and would spend the next 3 days throwing up unable to keep anything down at all. Going hungry wasn't an option.

certainly it always turns out to be parental stuff (sometimes heartbreaking) with dr tanya b.
