A fresh faced John Carter has just arrived for his first shift and I’m about to lose about 200 hours to watching a 30 year old tv show.

OP posts:
Aberdyfi · 21/02/2026 21:31

I rewatched the whole thing a few years ago. Socially speaking it was so interesting. The things that struck me the most was the massive impact that HIV and AIDS had. Who would have thought that 30 years on it would be a disease that people have but be non symptomatic and able to live long and healthy lives. Also the amount of shit that even successful, professional women were prepared to put up with. A modern HR dept would have a field day Dr Romano. And yes, 15 year old me had good taste, because Dr Carter is still dreamy.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/02/2026 21:38

I’m rewatching, watched most of it the first time round although not the first couple of series.

Its aged pretty well so far.

piperatthegates · 21/02/2026 21:48

Me and my late DH used to love ER. He had a crush on Nurse Carol Hathaway and I loved Dr Greene (over Dr Doug Ross who most people had the crush on) I might have to watch it over again.

crackofdoom · 21/02/2026 21:49

I watched the whole lot when it was on More 4 a couple of winters ago. It's a classic- the quality is brilliant. I only realised when I got to the very end and there was a programme about ER that Steven Spielberg was an executive producer.

George Clooney's character comes across as a bit of a twat in hindsight though.

I loved it first time round and also rewatched about 5 years ago and thought the same thing about AIDS. DD (18), who incidentally is named after one of the characters, has just started watching it so I keep getting texts like “I hate Doug!”. She also loves Carter. I wish I could watch The Pitt but don’t think it’s one any of the platforms that we have.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/02/2026 22:05

For a 90s show it does really well on having a diverse cast and a lot of the issues are still relevant now.

I agree the main difference is the huge steps forward with HIV/AIDs treatment, it’s still treated as a death sentence in season 1.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/02/2026 10:19

Chloe definitely has ADHD, I’m surprised it wasn’t diagnosed, even in mid 90s it was known about I think.

SquareSweetsThatLookRound · 22/02/2026 10:59

If we like The Pitt will we like ER?

It's literally impossible to not like ER. It's against the law of physics.

tiggerdeadcat1997 · 22/02/2026 11:11

The Pitt is on HBOmax , which SKY will have sometime in March. Recently got email to say HBOmax , Disney+ & Hayu are to be included on SKY. Been waiting to see The Pitt because everyone says it is like ER.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 22/02/2026 11:15

I've started watching Season 1, it's just too good not to. You realise how pitiful the storylines are on shows like Casualty and Grey's Anatomy are in comparison. It's very gritty and real. And young George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Eriq La Salle and Noah Wyle... yes please Grin

IsThisLifeNow · 22/02/2026 11:21

Love er!!! I rewatched it last year was was so happy it's held up, the things that make it show it's age is the computers abd mobile phones, but it was very forward thinking in it's approaches to sexism, HIV, race and trans and LGBTQIA issues.

It doesn't even look it's age filming wise, it's a great show!

IsThisLifeNow · 22/02/2026 11:23

Although I've found it so funny to see how my attitudes to characters have changed, Kerry weaver used to be annoying, but as a grown woman I now completely understand her

MunicipalDarwinism · 22/02/2026 11:43

Has anyone noticed George Clooney's wobbly head in ER? Once you notice it, you can't notice it.

Agree that Doug was an absolute arse.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 22/02/2026 11:43

I only dipped in.and out first time. They do love a tracking shot dont they? Amazing how attitudes and procedures have changed(Carter shagging a patient in the xray office, Doug encouraging Mark to have an affair) so many things done without gloves. But im invested.

Oh yes! Talking to carole and he was like a bobble head.

Oh yes, my view of her completely changed when I rewatched! She's one of my favourite characters now.

@SquareSweetsThatLookRound you should do, I haven't seen the Pitt but get the impression that it was very much inspired by ER.

Loved it back in the 90s and am now on Season 1 re-watching. It’s just as brilliant.

The ‘Blizzard’ episode. Just wow!

crackofdoom · 22/02/2026 13:04

One of the things that struck me over how much we have moved on since the 1990s was the MASSIVE hoo ha over Kerry Weaver coming out (not least her own denial). It would be much less of an issue nowadays.

Mulledjuice · 22/02/2026 13:41

I just watched episode 1 after seeing this thread this morning. Never seen ER before. Hooked!

FrothyCothy · 22/02/2026 13:52

I had two series to go in my rewatch before channel 4 took it off their streaming service so am delighted I will get to finish it.

I adore Maura Tierney and think she is so underrated as an actress - I’m surprised her career never took off as it should have. Agree that Kerry Weaver is a much more sympathetic character as an adult than she was when I was a teen. Mark Greene is twice the man Doug Ross ever was. And Carter is the heart and soul of the show.

The Pitt is spectacular btw - really feels like it picks up where ER ended.

pinotnow · 22/02/2026 14:02

I think it was so well-observed about the world of work too, not just in terms of hospitals. I'm thinking of Carol being really pissy sometimes with students and and when Jeanie first came and most especially with the receptionist Mark dated for a while and Carol couldn't get over the fact that he'd employed her without her say so.

Remembering now the episode where Carter is at Weaver's house, can't recall why, but he comes into the kitchen to find her bopping around to Grace Jones singing Ring of Fire at high volume and she shouts 'IT'S GRACE JONES!' to a bemused looking Carter. Fabulous.

RubieChewsDay · 22/02/2026 15:16

I think Carter may have been Kerry's lodger for a while? So much happens over the 15 years, I've forgotten so many details.

Currently on episode 3 with the guest appearance of Rosemary Clooney ❤

@Mulledjuice love that! I did wonder if it would have the same impact for a new viewer all these years on.

The quality of the shows is amazing given there’s so many episodes in a season, they must have filmed like two a month?

Carter is amazing, I think he’s my favourite character.
