The mugs were Bilton’s Spring Bouquet and they probably came from the Argos catalogue.
The china that was everywhere that year was Eternal Beau. I must have bought bits of it for wedding gifts for at least four friends. Maybe they are all too posh for it in Rivals though.

Not to mention Marks & Spencer Harvest

I will however tune in for S3 👀😄

you haven't seen the last 6 episodes of season 2 yet!

I see new cast members are being announced - Rachel Stirling as Araminta Pemberton (Monica's sister), Rupert Evans as David Hawkley and Santiago Cabrera as Alejandro Mendoza.

I've just realised that Santiago Cabrera was also in the Three Musketeers with Luke Pasqualino.

anxietyispartofme · 06/06/2026 17:56

Maybe they really wanted to include a death to progress other storylines. Am I evil for saying I would have preferred it to be Mousie?

Violetparis · 06/06/2026 18:14

The one thing I really don't like about the show is the actresses topless scenes, I really think they are uneccesary. Don't like the male nudity either but the females bother me more. I'm becoming more like Mary Whitehouse every day !

Oh yeah that’s what I meant 🤦‍♀️😂

ohyesido · 06/06/2026 18:24

It’s strange to have killed Monica off as this didn’t happen in the book and I can’t think of any similar deaths in the books that they might have taken a s adjusted into the storyline.

the nude pictures of Maud exposing her affair with Tony is taken from Riders where Helen developed photos from Rupert’s camera and discovered his affair with a groom.

it was somewhat reminiscent of the accident in Polo that resulted in Will’s death

thenightsky · 06/06/2026 19:15

I bloody love Monica and I don't get her ending at all. No need for that.

Notonthestairs · 06/06/2026 17:33

Have to put my hand up and admit I hadn't heard of the 'bury the gays' trope so I googled it. As CaragianettE and Loopytiles have said Monica's death fits neatly in to it.

I don't really understand why, having spent the time developing Monica's character and giving the viewer the chance to understand her, they've lost one of the standout & universally popular characters.

I suspect that the majority of viewers - maybe even all - would have preferred for the writers to give Monica and Enid the love affair we thought they deserved. Their life as a couple is referred to in the books but not given explicit space and this would have been the great opportunity to add to that.

Wait what - so they’re a couple in the books? I had totally assumed that was a 2020s addition. Well that makes it even more outstandingly crap of the showrunners to kill Monica off. They should be embarrassed to be more cliche and retro in their portrayal of lesbian characters than a woman writing in the 1980s, ffs.

They aren’t revealed as a couple until later books, in Rivals Monica is acknowledged to be a closet lesbian but she doesn’t get with Enid until Appassionata

anxietyispartofme · 06/06/2026 20:01

What do we think is next for Freddie and Lizzie? Was that just them reigniting their affair or does it mean they’re going to leave their spouses?

Raven08 · 06/06/2026 20:31

Santiago caberra! Oh, he's ridiculously handsome 😍
Can I ask (as I read the books decades ago and can't remember...) Do taggie and Tony's brother have a thing?
Really disappointed in Monica's death storyline 😡

From what I can remember, he tries it on and asks her out but nothing happens. She’s too besotted with Rupert. Maybe they will have more of a thing in the tv show though.

Lunde · 06/06/2026 20:38

I wonder if they are going to make more of the Sarah Stratton baby thing - without Monica, Tony Baddingham is single.

Paul punches James in the trailer, so he must mistakenly think he’s the father.

Yes, I was pleased to see Santiago Cabrera's name mentioned.
I loved the Musketeers!

Yes I think at the end of Rivals Monica and Tony are still together and she is worried about him!

Ooh, Lysander’s dad (Hatchet?!). Doesn’t he end up marrying someone we like?!

CoastalGrey · Yesterday 05:21

I really haven’t enjoyed this season, it’s strayed much too far from the book (although occasionally absolutely spot on) and the last episode was pointless - nothing about the franchise and killing off a main character for no apparent reason.

I’m really disappointed and if they’re bringing in David Hawkley to the next one they’re clearly muddling it further by introducing the fourth book. I think the acting is great but the storylines have got completely lost and it doesn’t have the charm and balance of the first season.

noodlezoodle · Yesterday 06:50

I've adored this series so far but I'm v upset about Monica. I think the way they've altered the storylines and merged books has been very clever, but this just feels unnecessary and as most people were rooting for Monica, a weird choice.

However they are doing a brilliant job and if it was OK with Jilly then I assume the second half of the season will make sense.

BUT. I am NOT happy with waiting until November for the next 6! They'd better be working on series 3 while they're keeping us waiting <sulks>

Rupert's ex, Helen.
Is she in the television series?

Yep, Helen is there

Edited

It's been awhile since I read them but I thought it was Georgie Maguire & Lysander's father, and Helen ends up with Rannaldini?

Although they seem to be playing fast and loose with the source material so who knows 🤷‍♀️

Loved the final episode, brilliant performances all round!
