Any suggestions for good period dramas? I'm just getting into the genre, recent watches I have loved are Downton Abbey, Home Fires and have nearly finished Cranford.

I have Lark Rise to Candleford on dvd, just wondering if it is a better spring/summer type watch?

I have Netflix, Now TV, Prime and usual UK terrestrial channels apps.

Harlots

If you can find it then I highly recommend War & Peace.

If you liked Home Fires you might also like Foyles War.

It is in fact a detective series but set in WWII and so has lots of historical aspects.

There's also Wolf Hall, but seems to be a bit of a marmite series. Some love it, some dont!

I think Prime has some good historicl movies but somehow I cant search the web site.

Think they also have the series The White Queen and the White Princess.

We’re watching Sanditon at the minute, after Downton and The Gilded Age.

My favourite of all time is Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes.

Love this! I’m watching the forsytes on Netflix and it’s great! Also second the recommendation for north and south. If war and peace is still on iplayer that was fab! Also if you want a film the age of innocence. There was a really good little Dorrit on iplayer a while ago too.
also loved outrageous and harlots
oh and Victoria on itv/ Netflix is a great watched….i binged it on mat leave

Bobbieiris · 06/02/2026 17:03

Also recently watched the hour series one….so good! I love a costume drama 😊

Pancakeflipper · 06/02/2026 17:09

I'm enjoying the Forsythe Saga on Netflixs (the moody Damien Lewis version).

RedRiverShore6 · 06/02/2026 17:17

The other North and South with Patrick Swayze and Kirsty Alley is good but I'm not sure it can be viewed anywhere

DrNo007 · 06/02/2026 17:18

Another vote for North and South. Brilliant.

Londonmummy66 · 06/02/2026 18:12

Cranford if it is still on iplayer
Becoming Elizabeth - very atmospheric as they lit it as if it was candles. Quite a lot of scenes are shot indoors so it has the feel of a 1980s BBC costume drama.

KeepOnCleaning · 06/02/2026 18:13

I just watched Harlots on netflix which was really good

The original Upstairs Downstairs with Gordon Jackson and Jean Marsh
To Serve Them All My Days - a boys' school between the wars.
Goodbye Mr Chips with Martin Clunes - another boys' school story.

Do you know where I can find "To Serve Them All My Days" to watch? Is it only available via DVD?

I've really enjoyed The Hardacres on channel 5 and The Gilded Age on sky. I'm hoping both will do another series this year.

I came to say The Gilded Age. I think the next season is due sometime in the summer 🤞
